Oscars 2012 Category Breakdown: Best Original Song & Best Original Score & Best Foreign Language Film
Today we continue my breakdown of all the Oscar categories by going into Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Foreign Language Film.
Foreign Language Film is a category I don’t care about, and I’m glad this is an easy year for that.
Best Original Score is a category I like, even if they don’t always nominate stuff I like or vote for what should actually win. But there’s not much to say there. It’s like Cinematography. It’s usually more interesting than not and usually they vote well in it.
Best Original Song — I’m glad they finally changed that stupid ass voting process. That said, now the problem is that they don’t write good songs for films anymore. But that has nothing to do with the Oscar category. The branch tried to make their stupidity right, and I’ll respect that for the time being. Because that was much easier changed than a lack of great original songs for movies.
But, that’s what we’re doing today. I’ll go over all the past nominees of the categories, list this year’s nominees, then rank what I think each’s chances at winning are.
We start with Best Original Score, then move onto Song, then finish with Foreign Language Film:

I love this category, historically. Recently — I don’t know if there are restrictions or they just don’t vote for stuff, but my favorite film scores of almost all the past five or six years have been ignored. Cloud Atlas, Tron: Legacy, True Grit, The Assassination of Jesse James, Sunshine, The Fountain – it’s ridiculous. But overall, they do generally go for good stuff.
This year’s nominees are:
Anna Karenina
Argo
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Skyfall
I like the category. Four of them were on my favorite scores list. Argo seemed like a weak choice to me, but I can deal. I’m just happy Skyfall got on. That’s all I care about.
5. Argo. It’s not gonna win. It could, but of all this film’s nominations, I feel like this and Supporting Actor are the two that no one thinks are gonna happen. I can’t consider this more than a #5 right now. #5s win in this category, but right now I don’t see it as a major contender.
4. Skyfall. I just don’t see them voting for him here. If somehow everyone loved the film enough, they might, but I’m pretty sure something like the last ten winners were all Best Picture films (just, nominees. Not winners). Which automatically narrows this list down. I feel like people will have a conception of this score as something it’s not, and that will keep them from voting for it en masse. It should win, but it won’t.
3. Anna Karenina. He won for his last Joe Wright film (but that was a film more people saw, and it had the benefit of a bunch of other nominations). It’s an upset winner, because the score is great, but I don’t see it as being a favorite at the moment, or even going into the night. It could happen, but I don’t see it being ranked above #3 if it does.
2. Lincoln. It’s John Williams. You know they’re looking to give him one. There’s a chance he wins last year if he doesn’t have the dual nominations. To me, he’s a threat every time. He wins this and no one is surprised. However, I think your favorite and likely winner is…
1. Life of Pi. Which score is more noticeable if you’re thinking broad strokes? This one. (Of the Best Picture nominees, I mean.) They like giving it to first-timers, apparently, since I think all the way back to 2005, the winner has been someone who hasn’t been nominated before. (Except 2006, the dude from 2005 won again in ’06.) I just see this as being the one that’s gonna win. I’d be happy if it didn’t, but I just see this as being the one to take it.
It’s a little wide open, but I feel like either Williams is getting the career Oscar, or Danna is getting it. I can’t see them going anywhere else except maybe Marienlli.
Onto the songs…

This year’s nominees are:
“Before My Time,” Chasing Ice
“Suddenly,” Les Misérables
“Pi’s Lullaby,” Life of Pi
“Skyfall,” Skyfall
“Everybody Needs a Best Friend,” Ted
5. “Before My Time.” We’d be shocked, is all I’m gonna say.
4. “Everybody Needs a Best Friend.” I’d be surprised. I figure the nomination is the win. But I don’t know — Norah Jones sang it, Walter Murphy was in on it, MacFarlane — they could vote for this. I don’t see it actually happening, but they might say, “We like these people,” and vote for them. I wouldn’t be shocked, but I would be surprised. Especially given the heavy hitters and the heavy favorite in this one.
3. ”Pi’s Lullaby.” It’s your upset choice. Don’t see it actually happening, but this is your upset choice, given widespread respect and love for the film.
2. “Suddenly.” This seemed like a slam dunk winner two months ago. Now — it’s kind of an afterthought. It’s the weakest song in the film, but it is a nice way to vote for the dudes who wrote such an amazing musical. So I can see it winning, but at the moment, there’s only one favorite in this category and one song that everybody loves.
1. “Skyfall.” As soon as the vocals start on this song, I get chills. This is one of the better Bond songs of all time. It’s ridiculous that a Bond song has never won, but in a way, I get it, since there have been so few great ones since the early days of the franchise. And back then, the Original Song category was spectacular, since back then they gave a shit about original songs. Not now, with the bullshit pop music they use over everything. But anyway, it’s not surprising a Bond theme has never won. This feels like the right time. Not to mention — it’s the 50th Anniversary of Bond, and they’re gonna pay tribute to it — I just think it’s gonna happen. It has everything going for it. And she’s gonna be SINGING IT at the show! This is your favorite. I will be shocked and outraged if this doesn’t win, since no other choice is gonna hold up as well as this will.
Onto Foreign Language Film, which will be quick…

This year’s nominees are:
Amour
Kon-Tiki
No
A Royal Affair
War Witch
5. A Royal Affair. Does not matter.
4. Kon-Tiki. Does not matter.
3. War Witch. Does not matter.
2. No. Does not matter.
1. Amour. Your winner.
Come on, now. Unless we get some crazy Pan’s Labyrinth kind of deal (which we could), Amour is taking this category the way A Separation did last year. If it loses, only No or War Witch are beating it. I know this category is prone to the huge upset, but let’s be serious now — I want to meet the person who actually puts something else on their ballot for Oscar night.

So those are today’s categories. Tomorrow, we talk about… fuck, what are we talking about?
Costume Design and Makeup & Hairstyling. That’s what we’re talking about.
Reblogged this on Flocus Studios and commented:
So this the the breakdown of the Oscars Specs :D
