Oscars 2011 Update: Art Directors Guild Nominations

This really doesn’t have anything to do with major Oscars — but for those of you interested (this is one of the awards I do like paying attention to, since — it’s just sets and props and stuff. Everyone can notice and have preferences), here are the nominations for the Art Directors Guild awards:

Period Film:

  • Anonymous
  • The Artist
  • The Help
  • Hugo
  • Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Love the Tinker Tailor love. The other four mostly make sense. Anonymous makes sense because of what it is. Still, it’s weird to see it come out of nowhere. Don’t be shocked if it’s magically nominated, since the Art Directors are the ones who vote for Oscar nominations, but I see enough strength elsewhere to think it’s a longshot at best. Still, you’re looking at a two horse race here (with a solid entry having no shot, and a mainstream dark horse being a spoiler). Personally, I say they lean toward Hugo. How could they not, right?

Fantasy Film:

  • The Adventures of Tintin
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Cowboys & Aliens
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

As if we didn’t know what were winning here…

Contemporary Film:

  • Bridesmaids
  • The Descendants
  • Drive
  • Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

You know how people bitch that they always go with period films for stuff like this? Well can’t you understand why they do when looking at these films? Seriously, of all the sets in these five movies, can you honestly remember more than one of them? (Note: The one you can remember is the film that’s going to win.)

So — I see clear favorites here come Oscar time:

  • The Artist
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
  • The Help
  • Hugo
  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Personally, I’d be surprised to see almost anything else get on the final list. (Of course, a non-nominated film could get on, but what would it be? War Horse? Oh yeah, actually War Horse. Trenches and shit. Wow. Weird they didn’t nominate that over Anonymous (or The Help). Curious. Does that mean we don’t see it get on?

Though, really, is there anything else that could possibly get on? And also, is there really anyone with a shot to win outside The Artist, Hugo or Harry Potter (seriously win. If you say The Help, I’m going to laugh so hard I’ll slap you in the face).

Also, tomorrow is the Writers Guild awards. I have personal interest in that, being that I have definite opinions as to what should be nominated in either category (you know, being a circus clown and all).
