Oscars 2011 Update: Costume Design Guild Nominations
Okay. The Costume Design Guild. Sister guild to the Lollipop Guild.
These categories are notoriously difficult to predict, for nominations, anyway. Simply because the Costume Design Guild separates their nominees into three separate categories, while Oscar only has one. So you need to gauge which films seem the strongest from all the nominees of the three sets and whittle it down to five.
But before we do that, let’s take a look at the nominees. First:
Excellence in Period Film
Excellence in Fantasy Film
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Red Riding Hood
X-Men: First Class
Excellence in Contemporary Film
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Honestly, just by glancing at that, I can probably tell you that the films with the best chance at being nominated are:
- The Artist
- The Help
- Jane Eyre
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
And maybe you want to put W.E. on there with — I don’t know, possibly The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or Melancholia, but honestly, those five seem like the five, unless something comes out of nowhere, which is a possibility. I’ll do some homework on this and check it out. But I know they love their period films, and apparently they love their Tim Burton films, since Alice in Wonderland won this last year.
A bit surprised to not see Tinker Tailor on there. But then again, not really. Also, Midnight in Paris could sneak on, based on the sheer amount of good will that film has. I can’t really think of anything off the top of my head that would seem guaranteed to get on.
At this point, I’d say that Potter, Hugo, The Help and The Artist are locks. And Jane Eyre also makes sense. So again, I can’t see how those aren’t your five. Maybe they let Potter slip off, since The Help seems like it’ll be on purely from the strength of a Best Picture nomination. And Jane Eyre seems like a slam dunk for this category. Honestly, anything but these five (and maybe W.E., Midnight in Paris or Tinker Tailor) seems like it would be a huge surprise. Right now, at least. Maybe I’m wrong. I don’t have all of the potentials at the top of my head.
But, those are your nominees for Costume Design. I’ll check back tomorrow with Sound Editors.
