Oscars 2011 Breakdown: Best Original Song, Best Original Score, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Animated Feature

Today we’re just grouping random things together. Normally I could spend a whole article just talking about Best Original Song and Best Original Score, but the music branch of the Academy has gotten so bad over the past decade that I can’t even bear to talk about how they make their decisions. I’d much rather look back in history at all the great stuff that’s come out of the categories. But since 2000, it’s been shit on top of shit on top of shit.

Then Best Foreign Langauge Film is a category I don’t much care about. I’m mostly interested in looking at what was nominated (since this is the first time I’m actually looking at the categories), just to see how many films I recognize. I’d wager that many of the films we know to be great foreign films didn’t even so much as make the nominees list, which is precisely why this category never meant anything to me. And Best Animated Feature — it’s a new category, created because of Pixar and Disney, and has basically been about rewarding Pixar and Disney. Except this year. I don’t really know what happened this year. It’ll take some time to figure that one out.

Anyway, those are the categories we’ll be dealing with today. I’ll try to contain my talk mostly to what’s nominated this year. What I’d actually like to say about these categories is too much for this one article.

We start with Best Original Score:

See what I mean? It used to be such a great category, and then the Music Branch stopped trying. And on top of that, the rules have gotten so restrictive that great, memorable scores don’t even get nominated anymore. Carter Burwell was never nominated for scores like Fargo and True Grit. Most people considered Tron: Legacy‘s score to be one of the best of the year last year. Not nominated. The Ghost Writer — great score. Anyone remember the 127 Hours score? That’s what I’m saying.

This year’s nominees:

The Adventures of Tintin

The Artist

Hugo

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

War Horse

This is a tough one for me. I liked these scores, but I can’t help but feel Drive should have been here. Or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Or maybe even Moneyball. It’s just that the Tintin score feels too “John Williams doing John Williams.” Either way, really, the heart of this category is strong, and that’s what matters.

Here are the rankings, as I see them:

5. The Adventures of Tintin. I just feel like this has the least chance at winning. Maybe I’m wrong, and Tinker Tailor should go here, but I just feel like, if the two John Williams scores aren’t going to split votes, most people would vote for War Horse over this one. Remember, it’s not just the music branch anymore. I think this will be the last film people vote for in this category. It really doesn’t matter much anyway, since this is clearly a two or three horse race.

4. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The score was terrific, but I can’t see anyone voting for this over Hugo and The Artist. Can’t see it. Gotta put it #4.

3. War Horse. John Williams has been nominated 47 times. The fact that he is who he is will get him some votes. Plus this is a classic “John Williams” type score. He’ll get some votes. Still don’t see them being enough to take down the next two, though. Maybe he does, but I have to keep him here. Having two scores on this list really diminishes his chances. (Not to mention the lack of support for the film, overall.)

2. Hugo. Most people consider this the best score in this category. I can’t deny that. I can’t decide which of the two I like more. I’m happy calling it a tie and letting whichever one win. Still, this score has to be number two in terms of perception simply because this isn’t a silent film where music has to carry much of the load. This is just a great score. It could easily win. I don’t see it really happening, but it totally could. Still — does anyone think this is a favorite here? (Not “will win,” I’m talking about a favorite. This isn’t a favorite, it’s just a strong contender.)

1. The Artist. It has to be #1. It’s a silent film score. It’s fun, it’s jaunty. Whether it should beat Hugo is irrelevant. This score has been winning everything, and I can’t imagine it not winning this category. It could lose to Hugo and I’d be fine with it. But I still have to figure this to be the favorite until it doesn’t win. Of all the Oscars The Artist is likely to win, I think this is one of the ones that is most locked.

This is the one category that’s the biggest shell of its former self. This category used to be great. Now — it’s George Valentin right around the time of the fire. Look at the past decade of songs — it’s terrible! Outside of like, three great songs that won this award post-2000, look at the nominees. 2000 — mostly terrible or forgettable. 2001 — one song. 2002 — 2 good songs. 2003 — one good song and one okay one. 2004 — they all sucked. 2005 — weak category, though fun choice. 2006 — awful all around. 2007 — great category (weak #5). Only good year in the decade. 2008 — awful. Amazing how much better Springsteen could have made that category. 2009 — outside of the winner, disgustingly bad. Last year — the worst I’ve ever seen. Randy Newman winning for that song is like Paul Newman winning for The Color of Money.

And then this year — what the fuck, Music Branch? There were some decent songs here! “Life’s a Happy Song” should have won this in a landslide! There were up to five decent nominees! Sure, they wouldn’t have held up, but film music is awful nowadays. That can’t be helped. We have to work with what we’re given. And this is what we’re given?

Keep in mind, based on the voting, we have to assume that only one song (and it’ll be clear which one it is) got the requisite 8.25 score to get on, and the second nominee is only there because it was the second-highest scoring song. Which is disturbing in its own right.

Seriously, if this doesn’t lead to some large-scale changes in the Music Branch and how it nominates films, this category might be worth axing all together. You know what this category looks like? The NFL Pro Bowl. Now someone pull a Goodell and tell them to fix it or get the fuck out.

Oh, here are the nominees:

“Man or Muppet,” from The Muppets

“Real in Rio,” from Rio

This category is an abortion. I really hope they don’t perform these at the ceremony. What a waste of time it would be.

I’m not even gonna rank them. “Man or Muppet” is winning this. And if it doesn’t, this category should be discontinued.

That said, let’s look at this year’s nominees:

Bullhead

Footnote

In Darkness

Monsieur Lazhar

A Separation

There’s a clear winner here, but, this category being what it is — it’s not a guaranteed that it wins. I also know nothing about these films, outside of the one everyone figures is going to win, so…

5. Monsieur Lazhar. It just feels like the #5.

4. Footnote. Israeli. Apparently it’s not particularly good, according to the people who’ve seen all the nominees.

3. Bullhead. No idea why. Just figured it would be. Though I’ve been hearing this film mentioned quite a bit lately. If something unexpected were gonna spoil, I feel like this would be the film. #2 feels too on-the-nose.

2. In Darkness. Polish. About the Holocaust. Definite contender. But…

1. A Separation. This film has swept all the way through and has a Screenplay nomination. That should make it clear it’s your favorite to win. Of course, Pan’s Labyrinth won three Oscars before losing Best Foreign Language Film. So who knows? Either way, this has to be considered the favorite until it loses. (Does anyone think it will lose, though? I saw it, it’s terrific. I have to assume anyone watching these films will feel the same way.)

It’s not the classiest of categories (See: Jimmy Neutron), but it gets the job done. Pixar wins in the year where they’re on their game (so, most years), and good stuff generally wins when they’re not nominated. I can honestly say that the only real mistake they made was in the very first category, with Shrek beating Monsters, Inc. That’s just one being better than the other. Pixar’s won for just about everything else, so it’s not that bad. It’s the first one, anyway. Plus the original Shrek was a good film, it was just diluted by too many pop culture references and terrible sequels.

Let’s look at this year’s nominees:

A Cat in Paris

Chico & Rita

Kung Fu Panda 2

Puss in Boots

Rango

I’m still amazed Pixar and Tintin weren’t nominated. I can see one of them, but both? That’s amazing and terrific at the same time. Because A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita are classic animation. I think those should be celebrated more than computer animation. Especially when there’s no story to back it up. So I support their decisions. Still, though, Tintin was really good. But hey, we work with what we get. Also, the reason Tintin wasn’t nominated is the same reason Andy Serkis won’t be getting nominated for an Oscar any time soon. Bias.

As for the rankings…

5. A Cat in Paris. Least seen of the films, and not one that will get votes. I refuse to believe this is anything better than fourth.

4. Puss in Boots. They’ve been pushing hard for this, but I don’t think it’ll do any good. The film’s just not that good, and I’d be shocked if people checking off their ballot picked this of all things.

3. Chico & Rita. Not seen by very many people, and even so, not a particularly strong choice at that. It’s well-animated, but the film is not particularly win-worthy. I don’t think enough people vote for this.

2. Kung Fu Panda 2. Because it made a lot of money, and people will most likely remember how much they enjoyed the first film. Plus they’ve been campaigning hard for this one. I think if anything’s gonna upset, it’ll be this. But, based on everything we’ve seen, I can’t imagine…

1. Rango losing this would be a shock to me. It’s won everything so far. How can this lose? Well, that’s an argument for another day. For now — this is clearly your favorite, and I would be mildly surprised if it didn’t win.

– – – – – – – – – –

That was actually a pretty easy category. I feel like three of the four are locked, and if any one is going to upset, I think it’s going to be in Foreign Language. Just because we’ve seen this happen before. Pan’s Labyrinth loses. Waltz with Bashir loses. The White Ribbon loses. These are films people thought to be locks going in. And the reason they lost was because people need to see all of the nominees. Whether A Separation will lose because of that remains to be seen, but don’t think it’s not a possibility you shouldn’t seriously consider. Of course, if you’ve seen all the films (which I haven’t done), you’d be better suited to know what will be considered the best (not what is best. That’s often irrelevant when dealing with the Oscars). But either way, I think most of these are going to have the same 3-4 consensus winners. Which is nice. When you’re going for maximum correctness in the picks, it’s nice to have as many as possible you’re convinced about.

Tomorrow we get into the decorative categories. All the practical stuff that goes into making things pretty.
