Best Original Song: A Categorical History (1986-1990)

1986: “TAKE MY BREATH AWAY,” FROM TOP GUN

“Somewhere Out There,” from An American Tail

“Glory of Love,” from The Karate Kid, Part II

“Mean Green Mother from Outer Space,” from Little Shop of Horrors

“Life in a Looking Glass,” from That’s Life!

Analysis: Where’s “Danger Zone?”

About this category — I get it, and, you kind of have to, but — I have to vote Fievel. You do what you gotta do. Imma do what I gotta do.

My Vote: “Somewhere Out There”

Rankings:

5. “Life in a Looking Glass”

4. “Mean Green Mother from Outer Space”

3. “Glory of Love”

2. “Take My Breath Away”

1. “Somewhere Out There”

1987: “(I’VE HAD) THE TIME OF MY LIFE,” FROM DIRTY DANCING

“Shakedown,” from Beverly Hills Cop II

“Cry Freedom,” from Cry Freedom

“Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” from Mannequin

“Storybook Love,” from The Princess Bride

Analysis: Let’s be fucking serious now.

My Vote: “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life”

Rankings:

5. “Cry Freedom”

4. “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”

3. “Shakedown”

2. “Storybook Love”

1. “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life”

1988: “LET THE RIVER RUN,” FROM WORKING GIRL

“Calling You,” from Bagdad Café

“Two Hearts,” from Buster

Analysis: My gut says, “Just give it to Phil or Carly.” And since Phil would win this for Tarzan in 1999, and Carly got fucked over for “Nobody Does It Better,” let’s give it to Carly.

But on the other hand — Phil’s song is better. So, sorry, Carly. I like the win, but I’m voting for Phil.

My Vote: “Two Hearts”

Rankings:

3. “Calling You”

2. “Let the River Run”

1. “Two Hearts”

1989: “UNDER THE SEA,” FROM THE LITTLE MERMAID

“After All,” from Chances Are

“Kiss the Girl,” from The Little Mermaid

“I Love To See You Smile,” from Parenthood

“The Girl Who Used To Be Me,” from Shirley Valentine

Analysis: Really, now?

(Also, where’s “Part of Your World”? It would have been a feat to have three songs from the same film that all win on their own. And it will be, since Menken’s gonna do it two or three more times after this. Also, I will say — if “Part of Your World” is here — that’s my vote. No contest.)

My Vote: “Under the Sea”

Rankings:

5. “The Girl Who Used to Be Me”

4. “I Love to See You Smile”

3. “After All”

2. “Kiss the Girl”

1. “Under the Sea”

1990: “SOONER OR LATER (I ALWAYS GET MY MAN),” FROM DICK TRACY

“Promise Me You’ll Remember,” from The Godfather Part III

“Somewhere in My Memory,” from Home Alone

“I’m Checking Out,” from Postcards from the Edge

“Blaze of Glory,” from Young Guns II

Analysis: Oh fuck, this is tough. Because there’s the badass choice and the childhood choice. And — I gotta go with the childhood choice. It’s too much a part of me to not vote for. Sorry, Bon Jovi.

Either way, I think they made a terrible choice here.

My Vote: “Somewhere in My Memory”

Rankings:

5. “I’m Checkin’ Out”

4. “Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)”

3. “Promise Me You’ll Remember”

2. “Blaze of Glory”

1. “Somewhere in My Memory”

Tomorrow’s a lot of fun, because it’s essentially my childhood.
