Best Original Song: A Categorical History (1996-2000)

Not as strong as the first half of the 90s, but… it’ll do, pig.

1996: “YOU MUST LOVE ME,” FROM EVITA

“I Finally Found Someone,” from The Mirror Has Two Faces

“For the First Time,” from One Fine Day

“That Thing You Do!,” from That Thing You Do!

“Because you Loved Me,” from Up Close & Personal

Analysis: Awful choice here. What’s with the Madonna fascination, Academy? You have two great songs here — the love song and the happy 60s rock and roll song. Take your pick. Either way — those are the only two.

My Vote: “That Thing You Do!”

Rankings:

5. “I Finally Found Someone”

4. “You Must Love Me”

3. “For the First Time”

2. “Because You Loved Me”

1. “That Thing You Do!”

1997: “MY HEART WILL GO ON,” FROM TITANIC

“Journey to the Past,” from Anastasia

“How Do I Live,” from Con Air

Miss Misery,” from Good Will Hunting

“Go the Distance,” from Hercules

Analysis: Really?

(Though too bad about “How Do I Live.” That song wins in another year.)

(P.S. Too bad about “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love).” I’d have put that on over “Journey to the Past.”)

My Vote:

Rankings:

5. “Journey to the Past”

4. “Miss Misery”

3. “Go the Distance”

2. “How Do I Live”

1. “My Heart Will Go On”

1998: “WHEN YOU BELIEVE,” FROM THE PRINCE OF EGYPT

“I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” from Armageddon

“That’ll Do,” from Babe: Pig in the City

“A Soft Place to Fall,” from The Hose Whisperer

“The Prayer,” from Quest for Camelot

Analysis: Don’t even pretend like you wouldn’t vote Aerosmith here.

My Vote: “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”

Rankings:

5. “A Soft Place to Fall”

4. “That’ll Do”

3. “The Prayer”

2. “When You Believe”

1. “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”

1999: “YOU’LL BE IN MY HEART, FROM TARZAN

“Save Me,” from Magnolia

“Music of My Heart,” from Music of the Heart

“Blame Canada,” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

“When She Loved Me,” from Toy Story 2

Analysis: Poor Randy. Every time he writes a great one, he has to go up against one that’s just as good or better. (It’s Phil all the way. That song — I just feel bad for Randy. What poor luck.)

Also, damn shame they didn’t include that “La Resistance Medley” from South Park. But I guess the fact that the movie was even nominated is a miracle. (We shouldn’t be surprised “Uncle Fucker” isn’t here. But “What Woud Brian Boitano Do?” That’s genius.)

My Vote: “You’ll Be in My Heart”

Rankings:

5. “Music of My Heart”

4. “Save Me”

3. “When She Loved Me”

2. “Blame Canada”

1. “You’ll Be in My Heart”

2000: “THINGS HAVE CHANGED,” FROM WONDER BOYS

“I’ve Seen It All,” from Dancer in the Dark

“My Funny Friend and Me,” from The Emperor’s New Groove

“A Fool in Love,” from Meet the Parents

“A Love Before Time,” from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Analysis: I’m okay with this because it’s Dylan and all, and you rarely get a chance to award the man, but I don’t like the song very much at all. I think the Crouching Tiger song is better, and I think Randy Newman’s song is better. And actually, I thought I was gonna vote for Randy here, because he hadn’t won, but I’m actually gonna vote for “A Love Before Time.” Surprised the shit out of me, but I’m doing it.

My Vote: “A Love Before Time”

Rankings:

5. “I’ve Seen It All”

4. “My Funny Friend and Me”

3. “Things Have Changed”

2. “A Love Before Time”

1. “A Fool in Love”

Almost there, folks. Now we hit the 2000s. Where shit really starts to go wrong. Now you’ll really see how bad things have gotten.
