5. “Colors of the Wind,” from Pocahontas

You think I’m an ignorant savage
And you’ve been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don’t know?
You don’t know …

You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You’ll learn things you never knew you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they’re worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

How high will the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you’ll never know
And you’ll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind

You can own the Earth and still
All you’ll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind

It pains me to have to say that this should have beaten Randy Newman and “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” for Original Song in 1995, but it totally did. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Just go to a middle or high school talent show. You’ll hear what I’m talking about.

4. “Part of Your World,” from The Little Mermaid

Look at this stuff
Isn’t it neat?
Wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete?
Wouldn’t you think I’m the girl
The girl who has everything?
Look at this trove
Treasures untold
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Looking around here you think
Sure, she’s got everything
I’ve got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty
I’ve got whozits and whatzits galore
You want thingamabobs?
I’ve got twenty!
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more

I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see them dancin’
Walking around on those – what do you call ’em?
Oh – feet!

Flippin’ your fins, you don’t get too far
Legs are required for jumping, dancing
Strolling along down a – what’s that word again?
Street

Up where they walk, up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wanderin’ free – wish I could be
Part of that world

What would I give if I could live out of these waters?
What would I pay to spend a day warm on the sand?
Bet’cha on land they understand
That they don’t reprimand their daughters
Proper women sick of swimmin’
Ready to stand

And ready to know what the people know
Ask ’em my questions and get some answers
What’s a fire and why does it – what’s the word?
Burn?

When’s it my turn?
Wouldn’t I love, love to explore that world up above?
Out of the sea
Wish I could be
Part of that world

The most personal entry to my top 10 list. I don’t care. This song is beautiful. Everything about it is perfect. Technically this is a Disney princess song, but I don’t really consider it a “classic” one, since she’s not really interested in love as much as she is in “up there.”

Still — I could listen to this song 10 times in a row and not get sick of it.

3. “Circle of Life,” from The Lion King

Nants ingonyama bagithi baba
(Sithi uhhmm ingonyama)
Nants ingonyama bagithi baba
(Sithi uhhmm ingonyama)
Ingonyama
(Siyo Nqoba)
(Ingonyama)
Ingonyama nengw’ enamabaal [x5]
Ingonyama nengw’ enamabala (Se-to-kwa!)
Ingonyama nengw’ enamabala (Asana)

From the day we arrive on the planet
And, blinking, step into the sun
There’s more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done

There’s far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high, through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round

It’s the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life

It’s The Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life

There is no single better opening three minutes to any Disney movie. Ever. You put a child in a movie theater and put this on, they’ll be fucking riveted within seconds.

Everything about this song is perfect. I honestly wish I could put it higher than #3.

I wonder if anyone would argue with #2…

2. “A Whole New World,” from Aladdin

I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?

I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride

A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we’re only dreaming

A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I’m way up here
It’s crystal clear
That now I’m in a whole new world with you
Now I’m in a whole new world with you

Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky

A whole new world
Don’t you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath – it gets better
I’m like a shooting star
I’ve come so far
I can’t go back to where I used to be

A whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I’ll chase them anywhere
There’s time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

A whole new world
That’s where we’ll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

No words. It speaks for itself.

Oh, also, it’s not Disney, but I just want you to know, if it were – “Somewhere Out There” from An American Tail goes here. That song, along with #1 and “Over the Rainbow,” is the epitome of all that is good in the world.

And now, #1. It’s pretty much an anticlimax, but we have to do it anyway.

1. “When You Wish Upon a Star,” from Pinocchio

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do

Fate is kind
She brings to those to love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true

You know it, I know it. They know it. Why do you think it’s the song that plays whenever their studio logo comes up? Of course this is #1.

That’s it, folks. Those are my favorite Disney songs.

Tomorrow we begin the Ranking Disney articles. Get ready for that. Those should be fun.
