Oscars 2012 Update: VFX (Visual Effects) Society Nominations and CAS (Cinema Audio Society) Nominations Announced

Two more guilds have announced their nominations, making tomorrow’s guesses at what’s going to be nominated a little bit easier.

The only groups left to announce their nominations are BAFTA (which is tomorrow), ACE (American Cinema Editors, which apparently announce on Thursday, but they were supposed to announce CAS then too, so…), MPSE (Motion Picture Sound Editors, which will announce at some point in the next week) and the Costume Designers Guild, which announces next Thursday. Which is pretty good. This helps us on most of the categories for Thursday.

So let’s get started with the Visual Effects Society Nominees:

Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture

(Title long enough for ya?)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Prometheus

Life of Pi

The Avengers

Battleship

Four of these are Oscar shortlisted. (Guess which one isn’t?) My guess is they give it to Life of Pi. But maybe not. Avengers could take it. I don’t really remember where they go. I only really care about them as it pertains to Oscar nominees.

Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture

Rust and Bone

The Impossible

Argo

Flight

Zero Dark Thirty

The Impossible all the way. Flight as a second choice. No contest.

Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture

Brave

ParaNorman

Rise of the Guardians

Wreck-It Ralph

Hotel Transylvania

Brave or Wreck-It Ralph. Leaning way toward Wreck-It Ralph.

– – – – –

Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture

The Hobbit: Goblin King
The Hobbit: Gollum
The Avengers: The Hulk
Life of Pi: Richard Parker

They should give it to Gollum, but Richard Parker might actually take this. By the way, these categories have nothing to do with the Oscars, but are fascinating to me, so I’m writing them all up.

Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Motion Picture

Brave: Argument
Hotel Transylvania: Dracula
Wreck-It Ralph: Vanellope
The Pirates: Band of Misfits

I’m not sure who Argument is. I guess it’s a scene or something. But it’s gotta be that. That or Vanellope.

Outstanding Created Environment in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture

The Hobbit: Goblin Caverns
Prometheus: LV-233
The Avengers: Midtown Manhattan
Life of Pi: Open Ocean

Life of Pi or Prometheus is winning. Or should win, anwyay.

Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Motion Picture

Brave: The Forest
ParaNorman: Graveyard
ParaNorman: Main Street
Rise of the Guardians: The North Pole

Brave looked so good.

Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Avengers: Downtown Manhattan
Total Recall: Hover Car Chase
The Amazing Spider-Man

Oh, it’s The Hobbit all the way.

Outstanding Models in a Feature Motion Picture

The Avengers: Helicarrier
The Impossible: Orchid Hotel
Men in Black III: Cape Canaveral / Apollo Launch
The Dark Knight Rises: Airplane Heist

Good category. My vote is the Airplane Heist, or maybe the hotel. Actually maybe the hotel.

Outstanding FX and Simulation Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture

Brave
ParaNorman: Practical Volumetrics
ParaNorman: Angry Aggie Ink-Blot Electricity
Rise of the Guardians: Last Stand

No idea.

Outstanding FX and Simulation Animation in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Life of Pi: Storm of God
Battleship
Life of Pi: Ocean

Life of Pi has to win this.

Outstanding Compositing in a Feature Motion Picture

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Life of Pi: Storm of God
The Avengers: Hulk Punch
Prometheus: Engineers & the Orrery

Meh.

So that’s the VFX Society nominees. Not totally helpful for the Oscars, but also helpful to have some sort of guideline.

The VFX Society is typically pretty good at guessing the Oscar nominees (provided they’re shortlisted). They’ve only really missed a handful of nominees over their years.

So your nominees are probably gonna be The Hobbit, Life of Pi, Prometheus, The Avengers and something else. Probably either Skyfall, Dark Knight Rises or The Amazing Spider-Man.

Also, I’ll tell you now… never in the history of this category has a Best Picture nominee been nominated and lost (unless it lost to another Best Picture nominee).

Onto CAS…

– – – – –

Here are the CAS nominees for this year…

(Just so we’re clear, CAS and the Oscar category for Sound Mixing are typically very similar. At worst they’re two off, and usually they only have one different.

Here are the nominees for live-action film:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Les Misérables

Lincoln

Skyfall

Zero Dark Thirty

– – – – –

And here are the nominees for animated feature:

Brave

Frankenweenie

The Lorax

Rise of the Guardians

Wreck-It Ralph

Forget the animated ones, your nominees are gonna be from that first category. And I can see all of them making it. At least four of them. Which is gonna be real helpful for tomorrow.

So those are today’s nominees. Tomorrow’s all the guessing and stuff.
