Oscars 2013 Update: ADG Nominations

And, on top of all that, the Art Directors Guild announced nominations as well.

What a way to guild the lily, right? Right?

I’m funny and I don’t care what you say.

Here they are:

Production Design in a Period Film

American Hustle

The Great Gatsby

Inside Llewyn Davis

Saving Mr. Banks

12 Years a Slave

I’d be cool if this entire category was your Oscar category.

Production Design in a Fantasy Film

Elysium

Gravity

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Oblivion

Star Trek Into Darkness

I like how Gravity is considered a fantasy film.

I guess that’s the one that bumped Oz the Great and Powerful off the list.

Either that or they figured most of it was CGI, so why bother?

Either way, I don’t think we’ve heard the last of that one yet. It still may be on your Oscar list.

Though Gravity is really the one from here that’ll be the major contender. Maybe The Hobbit, but the rest of the contenders are all Best Picture nominees, and those might snag votes.

(Though The Hobbit was nominated last year, which may allow them to continue a trend.)

Production Design in a Contemporary Film

August: Osage County

Blue Jasmine

Captain Phillips

Her

The Wolf of Wall Street

Not gonna happen. They never go contemporary. The last contemporary film nominated for Production Design was…

Technically Inception was fantasy, but sort of that.

The Dark Knight was also technically fantasy as well.

Still going…

I’m guessing we’re also counting Amélie as fantasy. Otherwise, 2001. But assuming it is…

Men in Black is obviously gotta be considered a fantasy as well.

Maybe Romeo + Juliet? If not that, then definitely The Birdcage. So about 20 years, is what I’m getting at. It’s not happening.

Your top seven contenders for the Oscar category are:

American Hustle

Gravity

The Great Gatsby

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Inside Llewyn Davis

Oz the Great and Powerful

Saving Mr. Banks

12 Years a Slave

I’d say the four locks here are 12 Years, American Hustle, Gatsby and probably Gravity, with Llewyn Davis, The Hobbit and Oz fighting it out for that fifth spot. And honestly, since Oz didn’t get a guild nomination, I don’t think it’s going to make it. I honestly think  your category will shake out as:

American Hustle

Gravity

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Saving Mr. Banks

12 Years a Slave

Alternate: Inside Llewyn Davis

That’s how I assume it’ll go based on past history and the like. (Though if it were up to me, Llewyn Davis is on.)

I promise that’s it for the guild nominations.

Today.
