Oscars 2013 Update: VES Nominations

The Visual Effects Society announced their nominations today.

This is mostly meaningless, since we all know Gravity is winning the Oscar.

But, you know — we go over shit. Maybe we’ll figure out who that fifth nominee is going to be.

Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture
Gravity
Iron Man 3
Pacific Rim
Star Trek: Into Darkness
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Or… not. Since that’s basically your Oscar category right there.

Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture
Rush
The Great Gatsby
The Lone Ranger
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The Wolf of Wall Street
White House Down

Excellent choices.

Oh, by the way — I skipped all the TV ones. I don’t care about those.

Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2
Despicable Me 2
Frozen
Monsters University
The Croods

Not a surprise. Japan isn’t eligible here.

Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Gravity, Ryan
Oz the Great and Powerful, China Girl
Pacific Rim, Kaiju – Leatherback
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Smaug

Wow — Sandra Bullock was animated in that movie?

Also, yes to everything else.

Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Epic, Bomba
Epic, Mary Katherine
Frozen, Bringing the Snow Queen to Life
The Croods, Eep

Outstanding Created Environment in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Elysium
Gravity, Interior
Gravity, Exterior
Iron Man 3, Shipyard
Pacific Rim, Virtual Hong Kong

They fucking nominated it twice!

Also, as great as Gravity was — major shout out to that Hong Kong location in Pacific Rim.

Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Epic, Pod Patch
Frozen, Elsa’s Ice Palace
Monsters University, Campus
The Croods, The Maze

Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Gravity
Iron Man 3
Man of Steel
Pacific Rim, Hong Kong Ocean Brawl
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Outstanding Models in a Feature Motion Picture
Gravity, ISS Exterior
Pacific Rim
Star Trek: Into Darkness
The Lone Ranger, Colby Locomotive

Outstanding FX and Simulation Animation in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Gravity, Parachute and ISS Destruction
Man of Steel
Pacific Rim, Fluid Simulation & Destruction
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Outstanding FX and Simulation Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2
Epic, Boggan Crowds
Frozen, Elsa’s Blizzard
The Croods

Outstanding Compositing in a Feature Motion Picture
Elysium
Gravity
Iron Man 3, Barrel of Monkeys
Iron Man 3, House Attack
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

So basically what this tells me is that your Oscar category will be:

Gravity

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Iron Man 3

Pacific Rim

And then either Star Trek Into Darkness or The Lone Ranger. Most people would assume Star Trek, but we can’t rule out The Lone Ranger entirely.

Now, there is a bake off for the branch, so if there is word that something wowed them, then maybe there’s some longshot that makes it on. But my guess is, everyone will have four of five right for sure in guessing.

Also, in case you don’t think those last two will be the fifth nominee, your other choices based on the shortlist are: Elysium, Oblivion, Thor: the Dark World and World War Z.

Honestly, the only one that potentially could make the list off that grouping is Oblivion. And even then — I’ll stick with one of those first two, if the guild went with those. Only Elysium even managed some sort of nomination from VES.

So basically you have four of five locks and a 50/50 on the fifth nominee.

I’ll take those odds every time.
