2013 Oscars Update: MPSE Nominations

The Motion Picture Sound Editors announced their nominations today for their Golden Reel Awards.

Funny, I thought they were announcing after Oscar nominations. I guessed they bumped them up to add extra intrigue or something. Which makes sense, even though nominations have been decided from a week ago. But now all the guilds are in, so that’s good. Allows us to guess a little better.

Here are your MPSE Nominations:

Best Sound Editing: Sound Effects and Foley

All Is Lost

Captain Phillips

Fast & Furious

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Iron Man 3

Lone Survivor

They’re never that much help, because they have so many categories and so many nominees in the categories. How do you narrow shit down?

Best Sound Editing: Dialogue and ADR

12 Years a Slave

American Hustle

August: Osage County

Captain Phillips

Inside Llewyn Davis

Lone Survivor

So this tells me they liked Lone Survivor. Which I figured.

Best Sound Editing in an Animated Feature

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

The Croods

Despicable Me 2

Ernest and Celestine

Monsters University

Way to narrow it down, guys. Way to go.

Best Sound Editing in a Foreign Language Feature

Blue Is the Warmest Color

The Grandmaster

The Past

One of these things is not like the others…

Best Sound Editing – Music in a Feature

Inside Llewyn Davis

Justin Bieber’s Believe

Metallica Through the Never

Maybe I wrote that previous comment too soon…

Best Sound Editing – Music in a Feature

American Hustle

47 Ronin

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

12 Years a Slave

World War Z

Best Sound Editing in a Feature Documentary

Dirty Wars

Good Ol’ Freida

Muscle Shoals

Rising from the Ashes

Sound City

20 Feet from Stardom

So it seems like the only one that really matters is that first one — Sound Effects and Foley.

I assumed All Is Lost, Captain Phillips, Gravity and All Is Lost would be nominated. And Iron Man 3 and The Hobbit are on my list of alternatives.

Personally, I’m still sticking with Rush for now, though it’s looking more and more like Iron Man or 12 Years a Slave or American Hustle could sneak on some Sound nominations.

So, now we have this. Doesn’t change the outcome, but does make us rethink our predictions in the 11th hour.
