Oscars 2014: Best Foreign Language Film Shortlist

And here’s what should be our final shortlist.

Best Foreign Language Film — I don’t put much stock into this category. Because there are always about 10-15 foreign films you hear about over the course of the year, and only like four of even ever make the shortlist. And I’m very outspoken on this subject, about how I feel certain moviegoers put emphasis on foreign films because they think they’re more artistic. So I don’t go out of my way to see them when there are a few hundred films that come out domestically each year.

Anyway, we have a shortlist of nine films. Five of them will be nominated. Here it is:

  • Wild Tales (Argentina)
  • Tangerines (Estonia)
  • Corn Island (Georgia)
  • Timbuktu (Mauritania)
  • Accused (Netherlands)
  • Ida (Poland)
  • Leviathan (Russia)
  • Force Majeure (Sweden)
  • The Liberator (Venezuela)

I’m not one of those people who puts much stock in what wasn’t nominated. I know people will do that, based on nothing except reviews and public perception, but that’s not me. I don’t care what was left off. I’m only here to talk about what has the ability to get on.

What’s funny is, we got The Liberator as a screener, and my immediate thought was, “That’ll never be nominated.” And here we are.

I saw Wild Tales, and I’m going to see Leviathan, Force Majeure and Ida. so based on that, I hope those four are nominated.

By the way, this is not going to be a full shortlist article. I’m not gonna go through what each one is about. Because at this point, I think we know what’s likely to get on. I’m just gonna briefly look at what I don’t know about.

Tangerines doesn’t sound like something that would get on, but the Globes nominate it. They don’t usually match up with the Oscars very well.

Corn Island sounds like it’s an art film. Don’t know if they’re gonna go for that.

Timbuktu — not feeling it.

Accused — not sure.

You know what? Here’s how I’m feeling it:

1. Force Majeure is on.

2. Ida is on.

3. Leviathan is probably on, but has the potential to be left off.

4. Wild Tales is very entertaining and seems like a nice inclusion.

5. Tangerines makes the most sense.

6. Corn Islands — maybe.

7. Timbuktu — not sure.

8. The Liberator — seems unlikely.

9. Accused — really not feeling it.

So let’s say my current guess at the category is gonna be:

  • Force Majeure
  • Ida
  • Leviathan
  • Tangerines
  • Wild Tales.

It’s not a very complex process for this. Usually, if something seems likely, it probably is. Most years you can go 4/5 without knowing much at all about this one. The shortlist does most of the work for you.

I’m taking the four plus TIMBUKTU because I doubt the Oscars will go completely Americas and Europe. Putting Africa in there gives the impression of diversity, which I’m sure the Academy would want.
