Oscars 2014: Annie Awards

The Annie Awards were last night. I’ll be brief, because they have a lot of categories and don’t really mean that much overall.

The one thing to note with guilds is that typically they will try to gear their voting toward what was nominated. So, going into these results cold, I expect a fairly poor showing from The Lego Movie. Since, clearly they didn’t nominate it, so they didn’t love it as much as the public did, and the people who would have voted for it here are more apt to not because it seems like a lot of guilds really want to be in line with what’s gonna happen at the Oscars a lot of the time.

So here are your Annie Award winners:

Best Animated Feature: How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Yup. It’s happening.

And it won for Directing, Character Animation, Music, Editorial and Storyboarding.

Best Writing went to Lego Movie.

Voice Acting went to Ben Kingsley in The Boxtrolls. Boxtrolls also won Production Design.

Big Hero 6 won for Animated Effects in Animated.

Book of Life won for Character Design.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes won for Character Design in Live-Action, to no one’s surprise.

Edge of Tomorrow won for Animated Effects in Live-Action.

Feast won for Animated Short.

Basically what this tells you is that How to Train Your Dragon is gonna win the Oscar.

Big night at Annie awards for How to Train Your Dragon 2. It’s certainly an entertaining movie and hopefully these awards will help keep Dreamworks afloat.

Put Dragon on your Oscar ballot!

Very happy to see Gravity Falls and my beloved Simpsons win in tv sections. Go Annies!

  2. Nah. Remember when the oscars went for Brave, but the big winner at the annies was “Wreck-it Ralph”? Plus, one has to understand that Disney and Dreamworks funding the Annies. They don’t fund the oscars (at lest not to this degree). For example Spirited Away won the Oscars, but not the annies.

I always got the impression that whoever is behind the oscars is secretly glad if they can give the award to something not Disney or Dreamworks without it looking odd.

Dang, really hope HTTYD2 doesn’t end up winning, as inevitable as it looks to be. GO KAGUYA!
