The B+ Movie Guide for the 2000s (Part XX)

The obvious drawback to my original list was that it stopped at 1999. Because it was easier. I wrote it up in 2012, and I wanted to give at least a decade’s worth of time before I made any of those decisions, because can we really say something that came out last year is essential? And at that point, it was just easier cutting the list off at 1999 and not dealing with any of it.

But since we really just combed through a lot of movies, I figure I should at least give it a shot. This is all pretty fluid anyway. It’s more meant to be about giving people things to watch that they probably should rather than making proclamations about the end-all, be-all list of “essential” movies. Think of it this way, if at least 90% of my list s comprised of movies people would say, if they found out you haven’t seen them, “Oh man, you gotta watch that,” then it accomplished what I wanted it to accomplish).

Here’s how this is gonna work: I’m gonna give you a giant list (I’ll cap it at a round number), going from 2000 to 2014, of all the movies you should see. And I’ll specify for each one whether it would go on an “essentials” list or that secondary “fun” list.

The Prestige (2006)

Nolan movies feel pretty essential. Should we give it more time?

The Queen (2006)

Most people say this is essential. I’m not sure why. Personally I feel this is fun list. And even then, not quite my kind of fun.

Rescue Dawn (2006)

Fun list. It’s good. Actually pretty underrated and unknown.

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

Fun list. I love these rotoscoped films.

Snakes on a Plane (2006)

Fun list. Because enough is ENOUGH!

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

I’d like to say essential, but probably just fun list. It’s a great movie, though.

United 93 (2006)

Kind of in the same place as Captain Phillips, only less so. That one, people will remember for the lines and the stars. Unless you’re really into movies, people don’t remember this movie at all. How can I truly call it essential? Even movie buffs don’t really remember this. I think this is fun list.

V for Vendetta (2006)

It’s fun list. Not essential. It’s well known, but it’s not an essential movie. Anyone who says it is I guarantee you is of a certain age.

Waitress (2006)

Fun list. Do people remember this? This movie is lovely.

The Wicker Man (2006)

One of the great unintentional comedies of the past twenty years. Fun list.

United 93 is my favorite film from 2006. At the very least, it’s arguably the most well-made film about 9/11.

    • Hahahaha!

By the way, did you see my new comment on “Ranking the Bond Movies: #11 – Quantum Of Solace”? Now that Spectre’s coming out and people have been talking heavily about the franchise once more, I just wanted to know your guys’ thoughts on all the hate (both public and critical) that has surrounded Quantum Of Solace since it’s release.
