The B+ Movie Guide for the 2000s (Part XXXVI)
The obvious drawback to my original list was that it stopped at 1999. Because it was easier. I wrote it up in 2012, and I wanted to give at least a decade’s worth of time before I made any of those decisions, because can we really say something that came out last year is essential? And at that point, it was just easier cutting the list off at 1999 and not dealing with any of it.
But since we really just combed through a lot of movies, I figure I should at least give it a shot. This is all pretty fluid anyway. It’s more meant to be about giving people things to watch that they probably should rather than making proclamations about the end-all, be-all list of “essential” movies. Think of it this way, if at least 90% of my list s comprised of movies people would say, if they found out you haven’t seen them, “Oh man, you gotta watch that,” then it accomplished what I wanted it to accomplish).
Here’s how this is gonna work: I’m gonna give you a giant list (I’ll cap it at a round number), going from 2000 to 2014, of all the movies you should see. And I’ll specify for each one whether it would go on an “essentials” list or that secondary “fun” list.
Seven Psychopaths (2012)
It’s no In Bruges, but goddamn, is this a fun movie. Clear fun list, and definitely one of those hidden gem movies that people are gonna love because it’s so hilarious and so strange.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
David O. Russell is proving his stuff to be essential. This feels essential now. We’ll see what time does for this. But feeling essential.
Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
Disney, man. You know what it is.
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Hands down essential. All around essential. Nobody’s gonna argue that one.

About Time (2013)
I’d push for this to be essential. Though I wish it were more out there than it is. Maybe this will get more out there. Like Speed Racer. Though that’s a bomb people are reevaluating. This is just a movie that nobody knows about. This will be a crown jewel of the fun list if it can’t make the essentials list.
All Is Lost (2013)
Feels like it’ll only be fun list, but man, is this great. One of those movies made for the fun list because it’s so unique. One man on screen by himself all movie. It fits on both, but it’s looking like this’ll go fun list.
American Hustle (2013)
Curious. Like I said up there… Russell. Feeling essential. I really want to see what time does to this movie.
Before Midnight (2013)
Essential. This entire trilogy is already essential.
Captain Phillips (2013)
Interesting. Don’t know how this shakes out. For now, it feels essential. Five years, ten years. Maybe not.
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
Feeling essential because of the performances, but time is gonna decide on this one. This might fall off to the fun list. I’m cool either way. It’ll be on a list.
