Oscars 2016: Independent Spirit Award Nominations

I’m starting to have time to work through the backlog, which can only mean one thing — Oscar season is upon us.

Here’s the Independent Spirit Awards, which I’ve always put zero stock into, especially now, where there are true indie movies, and the majority of the nominees are the big time indies, that were bought by the studios and have all this money behind them. So you pretty much know what’s gonna win based on what has a shot at the Oscars.

But I go over them, because I can.

Here are this year’s Independent Spirit Award nominees:

BEST FEATURE

American Honey

Chronic

Jackie

Manchester by the Sea

Moonlight

No idea what Chronic is. Get the other four. I imagine Moonlight will win this.

BEST FIRST FEATURE

The Childhood of a Leader

The Fits

Other People

Swiss Army Man

The Witch

Cool, cool. Seen all of these. Liked all of these to varying degrees.

Rooting for The Witch.

JOHN CASSAVETES AWARD

Free In Deed

Hunter Gatherer

Lovesong

Nakom

Spa Night

Absolutely no idea what any of these are. Maybe I’ve heard of Lovesong?

BEST DIRECTOR

Andrea Arnold, American Honey

Barry Jenkins, Moonlight

Pablo Larrain, Jackie

Jeff Nichols, Loving

Kelly Reichardt, Certain Women

Makes sense. MAYBE they go Larrain, but I assume Jenkins wins this too.

BEST SCREENPLAY

Moonlight

Manchester by the Sea

20th Century Women

Little Men

Hell or High Water

Good call. Maybe Manchester wins this.

BEST FIRST SCREENPLAY

The Witch

Other People

Barry

Jean of the Joneses

Christine

Rooting for Christine.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Free In Deed

The Childhood of a Leader

The Eyes of My Mother

Moonlight

American Honey

Eyes of My Mother looked nice. But the trick there was just black and white, mostly. Moonlight looked gorgeous and should win. American Honey is no slouch either. Big fan of how they shot that. Childhood of a Leader looked nice, but ehh. No idea what Free in Deed is.

BEST EDITING

Swiss Army Man

Manchester by the Sea

Moonlight

Hell or High Water

Jackie

Gotta see Jackie. That could end up being my vote. But currently it’s Hell or High Water, I think. Probably.

BEST FEMALE LEAD

Annette Bening, 20th Century Women

Isabelle Huppert, Elle

Sasha Lane, American Honey

Ruth Negga, Loving

Natalie Portman, Jackie

Like this list. Sasha Lane surprisd me a lot. Negga is my current favorite. Portman could easily overtake her.

BEST MALE LEAD

Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea

David Harewood, Free In Deed

Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic

Jesse Plemons, Other People

Tim Roth, Chronic

Has Casey Affleck not won this aleady?

BEST SUPPORTING FEMALE

Edwina Findley, Free In Deed

Paulina Garcia, Little Men

Lily Gladstone, Certain Women

Riley Keough, American Honey

Molly Shannon, Other People

I assume Molly Shannon will be the favorite to win this. But knowing them, the one no one knows will win. So it’ll probably be Findley.

BEST SUPPORTING MALE

Ralph Fiennes, A Bigger Splash

Ben Foster, Hell or High Water

Lucas Hedges, Manchester by the Sea

Shia LaBeouf, American Honey

Craig Robinson, Morris from America

Hedges should win. LOVE the Robinson nomination. LaBeouf was solid. Surprised no Bridges. But I like the Foster love. And Fiennes was awesome.

ROBERT ALTMAN AWARD

Moonlight

Cool.

BEST DOCUMENTARY

13th

Cameraperson

I Am Not Your Negro

O.J.: Made in America

Sonita

Under the Sun

Seems like a one-sided race here. How do you beat OJ?

BEST INTERNATIONAL FILM

Aquarius

Chevalier

My Golden Days

Toni Erdmann

Under the Shadow

Only three of these are eligible to be nominated. Aquarius will win, knowing them.

– – – – – – – – – –

That’s the thing with these awards. I post them, but I don’t really care about them, because they’re mainly irrelevant to the Oscars for my purposes. So unless I’m just reacting to them, there’s not a whole lot to say.

But that’s what the nominations are. So yeah.
