Oscars 2016: Best Visual Effects Shortlist

That was fast. The longlist was announced like two weeks ago. They announced 20, and now have whittled it down to 10.

For the record, when I went over the list and guessed what was gonna be nominated, I picked what I thought the shortlist would be. I got 8 of 10. Yeah, boy!

Here’s your shortlist for Best Visual Effects:

Captain America: Civil War

Deepwater Horizon

Doctor Strange

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

The Jungle Book

Kubo and the Two Strings

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I had Sully and Warcraft instead of Kubo and BFG. Certainly happy that Kubo made it on. Not a chance in hell they nominate it, but the shortlist is very, very nice to see.

Just by glancing at this, you can easily figure out what won’t be nominated.

Definitely not gonna guess BFG, Deepwater or Kubo. Maybe Kubo just because I’d like to see it, but I’m not sure.

Does Marvel get two on? They did two years ago.

Gotta figure yes on Jungle Book, probably for Rogue One.

Arrival is 50/50, but trending positive.

Passengers might be so DOA it has no chance. We’ll wait and see on that. Gotta watch it.

Fantastic Beasts could, but something tells me probably not.

So, probably, right now, I’d say…

1. The Jungle Book — This could win. This should 100% be nominated.

2. Rogue One — I feel like they wouldn’t snub Star Wars unless it was god awful.

3. Arrival — Probably, right? The effects are pretty seamless. But you never know.

4. Captain America: Civil War — They’re gonna bust a nut at that airport sequence and nominate this.

5. Doctor Strange — This is the one with the memorable visual effects. No list I guess isn’t gonna include this. This just feels like a nominee.

6. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them — I could see it getting on, but I could even more easily see it not getting on. This will be a judgment call at the end.

7. Passengers — This could go up or down depending on what the movie looks like. I’m flying blind at the moment

8. Kubo and the Two Strings — I feel like this has a small outside shot just because people loved it. I really don’t think it’ll be nominated, but it would certainly make me happy.

9. Deepwater Horizon — I just can’t see this getting nominated. The movie didn’t do well, and the effects weren’t the kind they rush to nominate.

10. The BFG — I think this shortlisting is just respect for Spielberg’s team. I don’t think this has really any shot. I guess it could and I could look dumb, because I could see it being that extra nominee, but I’m not feeling it.

So yeah, right now, I’m thinking your category will be:

Captain America: Civil War

Doctor Strange

The Jungle Book

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Let’s see if the next month does anything to change that.
