2016: The Year in Reviews (Observations & Wrap-Up)

As we always do, now that we’ve gone over all twelve months of the year and all the films that haven’t come out yet, we’re gonna analyze it all and figure out what it all means.

For reference purposes, here are all the articles involved in this:

Okay, so here’s what we’ve got:

As is always the case, the article is not finished at the moment it goes up, so it will be updated over the next week or two as I finish watching other movies. Just something to keep in mind.

Currently, I have seen 391 films in 2016.

For reference (since it’s interesting to me), I watched 344 movies last year, 313 movies in 2014 and 237 movies in 2013. (Before that it gets murky. Those three years are legit tallies.)

We’ll begin with a list of the films I haven’t seen. They’re separated into two parts — the films that I deliberately skipped and had no intention of ever seeing, and the films I just haven’t had a chance to see yet that I am planning on seeing when I can.

2016 Films I Skipped

None.

2016 Films I Haven’t Seen

None.

That’s right, bitches. I saw everything.

That’s 100% completion.

2013, I had a 92% percent completion rate. 2014 I raised it to 96%. Last year, I got to 97.7%.

We’ve just peaked, and this will likely never happen again.

I’m glad we got to share this moment.

Based on those numbers, of the 411 total films, I didn’t preview 133. Which means we’re basing this total on 278 films.

Of the 278 films I guessed my ratings for 149 of them correctly. Which is 53.6%.

I guessed 110 of them within a half-star of my eventual rating. So, of 278 films, I guessed 259 either exactly or within a half star. Which is 93.1% of them. There were only 19 movies I was a full star off on, and zero(!!!) I was more than a full star off on.

So, this year, I guessed how I’d rate 93% of movies within a half-star.

That comes out to an average rating of 3.16.

Last year, the average rating was 3.13.

– – – – –

Here’s a month-by-month breakdown of the year and how each month shakes out in terms of an average rating:

January

The Forest — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Anesthesia — * * * (3 stars); Diablo — * * * (3 stars); Lamb — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Ride Along 2 — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Norm of the North  * * (2 stars); Band of Robbers — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Moonwalkers — * * * (3 stars); The Benefactor — * * * (3 stars); The 5th Wave — * * ½ (2.5 stars); The Boy — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Dirty Grandpa — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Exposed — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Fifty Shades of Black — * * (2 stars); The Finest Hours — * * * (3 stars); Jane Got a Gun — * * * (3 stars); Kung Fu Panda 3 — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Grease Live — * * * * (4 stars)

With 19 films seen, January has an average rating of 2.79.

January 2011 had an average rating of 2.7. January 2012 had an average rating of 2.86. January 2013 had an average rating of 2.75. January 2014 had an average rating of 2.4. January 2015 had an average rating of 2.69.

We’ve hovering around the usual for January. It’s up slightly, owing to the Grease Live special airing on the last day of the month. Without that, we’d be right in low 2.7 territory, which is exactly what the average of this month is most of the time.

February

The Choice — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Hail, Caesar — * * * * (4 stars); Pride and Prejudice and Zombies — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Jim: The James Foley Story — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Regression — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Misconduct — * * * (3 stars); Deadpool — * * * * (4 stars); How to Be Single — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Zoolander 2 — 0 stars; 11.22.63 — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Touched with Fire — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Race — * * * (3 stars); Tumbledown — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Forsaken — * * * (3 stars); The Night Manager — * * * * (4 stars); Risen — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Eddie the Eagle — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Gods of Egypt — * * ½ (2.5 stars); A Country Called Home — * * * (3 stars); Standoff — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Mermaid — * * * (3 stars); Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Triple 9 — * * * ½ (3.5 stars)

With 23 films seen, February has an average rating of 2.90.

February 2011 had an average rating of 2.25. February 2012 had an average rating of 2.15. February 2013 had an average rating of 2.59. February 2014 had an average rating of 2.92. February 2015 had an average rating of 3.00.

February continues to be in transition. Last year, it was high because of VOD releases, this year it’s high because that’s when two miniseries’ started. Even so, though, you take those out and it’s still higher than usual. We seem to be heading toward a norm where February is a 2.8-star on-average month. Though I’m not ready to say that for sure until I see it happen again next year.

March

Knight of Cups — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); London Has Fallen — * * * (3 stars); Zootopia — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Whiskey Tango Foxtrot — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Wave — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Trapped — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Me Him Her — * * ½ (2.5 stars); The Brothers Grimsby — * * * (3 stars); 10 Cloverfield Lane — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Young Messiah — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Lolo — * * * (3 stars); My Golden Days — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Remember — * * * * (4 stars); Krisha — * * * (3 stars); Creative Control — * * * (3 stars); Hello, My Name Is Doris — * * * (3 stars); Eye in the Sky — * * * * (4 stars); Pee-wee’s Big Holiday — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Allegiant — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Miracles from Heaven — * * (2 stars); The Preppie Connection — * * * (3 stars); The Confirmation — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Bronze — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Midnight Special — * * * * ½ (4.5 stars); The Program — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice — * * * (3 stars); Too Late — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Get a Job — * * * (3 stars); My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Born to Be Blue — * * * (3 stars); I Saw the Light —  * * * (3 stars)

March hovers around 3 and goes above it when there’s a top ten/11-20 contender and a lot of solid films they don’t know how to market. That’s definitely the case this year.

April

The Dark Horse — * * * * (4 stars); Miles Ahead — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Everybody Wants Some!! — * * * * ½ (4.5 stars); Kill Your Friends — * * ½ (2.5 stars); April and the Extraordinary World — * * * (3 stars); One More Time — * * * (3 stars); The Boss — * ½ (1.5 stars); Hardcore Henry — * * * * (4 stars); Demolition — * * * (3 stars); Louder Than Bombs — * * * (3 stars); Mr. Right — * * * (3 stars); The Invitation — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Barbershop: The Next Cut — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Criminal — * * * (3 stars); The Jungle Book — * * * * (4 stars); Colonia — * * * (3 stars); The Trust — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Green Room — * * * * (4 stars); I Am Wrath — * * * (3 stars); The Adderall Diaries — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Sing Street — * * * * (4 stars); The Huntsman: Winter’s War — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Elvis & Nixon — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Holidays — * * ½ (2.5 stars); A Hologram for the King — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Meddler — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Tale of Tales — * * * * (4 stars); Precious Cargo — * * * (3 stars); Nina — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Keanu — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Driftless Area — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Special Correspondents — * * * (3 stars); The Man Who Knew Infinity — * * * (3 stars); Ratchet & Clank — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Term Life — * * * (3 stars); The Family Fang — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Mother’s Day — * * (2 stars)

With 37 films seen, April has an average rating of 3.08.

April 2011 had an average rating of 2.9; April 2012 had an average rating of 2.85. April 2013 had an average rating of 2.88. April 2014 had an average rating of 2.81. April 2015 had an average rating of 2.92.

April is up, but we are starting to see most months trend toward a norm. This is cool.

May

Captain America: Civil War — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); A Bigger Splash — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Being Charlie — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Mothers and Daughters — * * (2 stars); Money Monster — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Darkness — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Last Days in the Desert — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); High-Rise — * * * (3 stars); Love & Friendship — * * * (3 stars); The Angry Birds Movie — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising — * * * (3 stars); O.J.: Made in America — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Nice Guys — * * * * ½ (4.5 stars); Maggie’s Plan — * * * (3 stars); Weiner — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Do-Over — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Alice Through the Looking Glass — * * ½ (2.5 stars); X-Men: Apocalypse — * * * ½ (3.5 stars)

With 18 films seen, May has an average rating of 3.14.

May 2011 had an average rating of 2.81. May 2012 had an average rating of 3.1. May 2013 had an average rating of 3.22. May 2014 had an average rating of 2.98. May 2015 had an average rating of 3.02.

We’re in the ballpark. May tends to fluctuate based on the VOD movies that come out and if the high profile releases are any good.

June

With 31 movies seen, June has an average rating of 3.27.

June 2011 had an average rating of 3.1. June 2012 had an average rating of 3.06. June 2013 had an average rating of 3.03. June 2014 had an average rating of 3.16. June 2015 had an average rating of 3.29.

June is exactly where it was last year. It’s generally pretty consistent overall, too. This has the highest amount of really bad big budget releases, historically, but also has some really great indie movies and documentaries. And Pixar usually helps bolster it too.

July

The BFG — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Legend of Tarzan — * * * (3 stars); The Purge: Election Year — * * * (3 stars); Life, Animated — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Our Kind of Traitor — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Marauders — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Dear Eleanor — * * * (3 stars); Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates — * * ½ (2.5 stars); The Secret Life of Pets — * * * (3 stars); Captain Fantastic — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Zero Days — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Cell — * * * (3 stars); Fathers and Daughters — * * * (3 stars); Ghostbusters — * * * (3 stars); The Infiltrator — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Train to Busan — * * * (3 stars); Phantom Boy — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Rebirth — * * * (3 stars); Undrafted — * * * (3 stars); Equals — * * * (3 stars); Cafe Society — * * * (3 stars); Ice Age: Collision Course — * * ½ (2.5 stars); The Childhood of a Leader — * * * (3 stars); Lights Out — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Don’t Think Twice — * * * (3 stars); Star Trek Beyond — * * * (3 stars); Indignation — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Tallulah — * * * (3 stars); Into the Forest — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Gleason — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Viral — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Can We Take a Joke? — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Hooligan Sparrow — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Nerve — * * * (3 stars); Equity — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Bad Moms — * * (2 stars); Jason Bourne — * * * * (4 stars)

With 37 films seen, July has an average rating of 3.03.

July 2011 had an average rating of 3.1. July 2012 had an average rating of 3.31. July 2013 had an average rating of 2.84. July 2014 had an average rating of 2.95. July 2015 had an average rating of 3.05.

The key to July seemingly is the big budget releases, but it’s actually the smaller movies. The big budget movies will always trend toward a 3, and it’s the smaller ones that will decide how much higher or lower the overall rating will go. This year, we’re in line with last year, definitely trending toward a uniform July rating.

August keeps going up. Normally I’d say VOD releases, but this one’s actually a couple of great indies that came out and ended up being top 25 films for the year.

With 40 films seen, September has an average rating of 3.08.

September 2011 had an average rating of 2.97. September 2012 had an average rating of 3.13. September 2013 had an average rating of 2.93. September 2014 had an average rating of 3.08. September 2015 had an average rating of 2.98.

September fluctuates based on whether there are more solid Oscar type contenders or shitty dump movies and horror-thrillers. 3 is the midline. It tends to spike up a bit when you have a top ten contender and a few tier two/11-20 movies, as we do this year.

October is down to about average. It was higher originally, but we had a lot of docs and VOD stuff get added that brought it back down.

November

With 32 films seen, November has an average rating of 3.47.

November 2011 had an average rating of 3.5. November 2012 had an average rating of 3.66. November 2013 had an average rating of 3.31. November 2014 had an average rating of 3.18. November 2015 had an average rating of 3.42.

We’re right on target for November. November is contingent on if the Thanksgiving releases are any good and if the Oscar movies don’t suck. Last year, there were barely any Oscar movies at all in November. This year, we had a bunch of really great stuff.

December

December 2011 had an average rating of 3.8. December 2012 had an average rating of 3.7. December 2013 had an average rating of 3.67. December 2014 had an average rating of 3.37. December 2015 had an average rating of 3.57.

December is always the highest rated month because this is when all the Oscar movies get qualifying releases. This December is down, no matter how you slice it. A lot of ho hum big studio releases and Netflix movies.

The point of this, in case you’re not following, is to aid in the How to Read a Hollywood Release usage. I have five years of ratings. That means, if I’m looking at a film, the most likely rating for it is going to conform to these averages above. And you can alter the guess based on your gut feeling about the film.

And that, my friends, is the year in reviews.

The Unforgivables are tomorrow. And I’ll tell you guys — there’s no shortage of choices this year. In fact, to make it interesting… here’s a giant pool of a lot of films that would appear to be likely candidates:

And those are just the obvious choices. There’s at least a dozen other movies that you’ve either heard of or haven’t that I could go with.

See if you can guess which way I’m gonna go. The amount of options actually makes it more difficult for you. I’d be interested to see if anyone can get more than half of the list.
