Oscars 2016: ADG Nominations
The Art Directors Guild announced their nominations. So now we have some clarity into that hotly contested Best Production Design category. I know I’ve got some money down in Vegas already.
By the way, have I mentioned how much I love the Best Production Design category? Because I feel like I don’t say that enough.
Anyway, here are the nominees:
Six nominees this year. I feel like they don’t usually get to six.
Cafe Society won’t get nominated. Fences seems very unlikely, given how few locations are actually in the film. Hacksaw… doubtful, right? Hail Caesar would be cool, but that doesn’t feel likely. And neither does Hidden Figures, really… huh.
This is weird, that I’m not feeling almost the entire Period category, which is basically the category you want to look at.
But I’m just going on instinct. I haven’t turned on the part of my brain that analyzes things yet. This is just gut reaction.
Jackie will get nominated, though. And possibly win. But outside of that, I’m not really feeling these other nominees.
Huh… what the hell else is there, now that I think about it? From Period…
Live by Night? I guess Silence, maybe. Allied… doubt it. Oh, Rules Don’t Apply. That’s one that could get it. That would make a little bit of sense. Not that I feel that would be a particularly better choice than Hidden Figures. Loving would be cool. But again, doubtful. Is Birth of a Nation totally out at this point?
Florence Foster Jenkins could maybe sneak in there somewhere if they like it enough. Costumes though, more likely, right?
The Light Between Oceans would be nice, but that won’t happen.
I think Hail Caesar has a legitimate shot at this, now that I think about it.
Let’s see what the other categories have to offer…
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Passengers is a no. Doctor Strange is a likely no. Arrival, probably. That movie is all production design. Fantastic Beasts… maybe. But they don’t typically like to nominate Potter movies. Rogue One… that would be nice. But Force Awakens wasn’t nominated. That’s not a positive.
I can’t think what else would count as fantasy for them, so let’s just move on.
Hell or High Water
La La Land
Manchester by the Sea
Oh, well yeah. La La Land is on.
So I can think of 3 out of the 5 nominees already. Which is okay.
Hell or High Water is a 40/60 against proposition. Lion won’t happen. Manchester would really surprise me. Nocturnal Animals is interesting and a possibility, but it feels like a very long shot.
I’m thinking right now: La La Land, Jackie, Arrival are on.
Hidden Figures, Hail Caesar, Fantastic Beasts, Rogue One, Silence, Rules Don’t Apply, Florence Foster Jenkins and Live by Night feel like the other contenders.
I’d feel mostly confident saying your nominees will come from that list. Not that it’s that difficult a thing to say. I gave you like ten movies in all. But you know, ten out of like 300 is still a solid markdown off the top of my head, right?
File it away, people. Nominations are in two weeks.
