Oscars 2016: Makeup & Hairstylists Guild Nominations

The Makeup and Hairstylists Guild announced their nominations today.

However, because the Makeup & Hairstyling Oscar category is so bizarre in their voting methods, we really don’t have a whole lot to talk about.

Here are your nominees:

Best Contemporary Makeup

Captain Fantastic

La La Land

Manchester by the Sea

Nocturnal Animals

Zoolander 2

None of these were shortlisted, so this means nothing to me.

Best Contemporary Hairstyling

La La Land

Nocturnal Animals

Sully

The Girl on the Train

Zoolander 2

Same thing. None of them were shortlisted.

Best Period and/or Character Makeup

Doctor Strange

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Hail, Caesar!

Loving

Suicide Squad

Hail Caesar and Suicide Squad were shortlisted, so we got that.

Best Period and/or Character Hairstyling

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Florence Foster Jenkins

Hail, Caesar!

Jackie

Loving

And now we have Florence Foster Jenkins joining the fray.

Best Special Makeup Effects

Deadpool

Doctor Strange

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Star Trek Beyond

Suicide Squad

And there’s Deadpool and Star Trek. So we got 5/7 of our shortlist. I guess that’s not as bad as you’d think.

For those keeping track, the shortlist for the Oscar is:

Deadpool

The Dressmaker

Florence Foster Jenkins

Hail, Caesar!

A Man Called Ove

Star Trek Beyond

Suicide Squad

Typically it’s pretty easy to guess what will or won’t get on.

I can’t imagine A Man Called Ove has any shot. This isn’t exactly aging a dude up to 100-years-old like last year. I also can’t see The Dressmaker making it on, though I’m sure it could happen. Amazon might hold some sway.

You have to figure that since everyone loved Deadpool, they’ll find a way to nominate that. Since everyone remembers the character makeup. Though really, when considering that against the others, it probably shouldn’t make it on.

Florence Foster Jenkins will likely get on. Meryl gets these things on. Hail Caesar seems like the closest thing to a lock so far. Star Trek makes sense, but I’m not sure if they’d go there. Suicide Squad could go either way.

You have to figure the likely category is Deadpool, Florence Foster Jenkins, Hail, Caesar. But Suicide Squad and Star Trek are contenders too. I feel like, were you to go with the category I suggested, you’re likely to get 2/3 right at minimum. Maybe there’s something that will sway me one way or another in the next week, but for now, that sounds pretty good to me.
