Oscars 2016: 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards
The SAG Awards were tonight. This puts all the acting categories into focus. We can still look at BAFTA next week, but this pretty much will tell you how things are gonna go.
We’re gonna roll through categories the way they handed them out, and then at the bottom we’ll talk about what, if anything, it means for the acting categories going forward.
Here are your SAG Award winners:
Best Actress in a Comedy Series
Uzo Aduba, Orange Is the New Black
Jane Fonda, Grace and Frankie
Ellie Kemper, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie
Winner: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
She wins this like, every year, it seems. Though looking it up, only her third one total. It just feels like she wins every year. But sure.
Best Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson, Black-ish
Tituss Burgess, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
William H. Macy, Shameless
Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
Winner: William H. Macy, Shameless
Good for him. Apparently he’d only won once before ever.
Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series

Black-ish
Modern Family
Orange Is the New Black
Veep
Winner: Orange Is the New Black.
Cool.
Best Supporting Actress
Viola Davis, Fences
Naomie Harris, Moonlight
Nicole Kidman, Lion
Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea
Winner: Viola Davis, Fences
I mean, was there ever any doubt? If she won for The Help and two years running for How to Get Away with Murder, did you really think they’d vote anywhere else? The question is if BAFTA will also vote for her. If that happens, shit’s locked, if it’s not already.
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali, Moonlight
Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water
Hugh Grant, Florence Foster Jenkins
Lucas Hedges, Manchester by the Sea
Dev Patel, Lion
Winner: Mahershala Ali, Moonlight
I’m so happy this happened. I was worried if he didn’t win this, the trail to an Oscar win was gone. But this might beget a sweep for him, and I will not be upset with that in the least.
This was a strong category, but his performance was commanding.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Black Mirror
Felicity Huffman, American Crime
Audra McDonald, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill
Sarah Paulson, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

That seemed like the obvious choice, no?

Bryan Cranston, All the Way
John Turturro, The Night Of

Best Actress

Natalie Portman, Jackie
Emma Stone, La La Land
Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins
Winner: Emma Stone, La La Land
WHOA.
This’ll be an interesting one. She needed this to make a play for it. She stands a chance at a win. Don’t necessarily think it’ll happen, but she could ride this to a win. BAFTA looms large.
Isabelle Huppert also looms large. Emma might have won this because Isabelle wasn’t nominated.
We have one win for Huppert, one for Portman, one for Stone.
Huppert isn’t up for BAFTA. So now we’re really in an interesting bind.
I’m thinking if Natalie takes BAFTA, that should do it. If Emma takes BAFTA, that should do it.
But yeah, we’re in for the most interesting Best Actress race in five years. So that’s cool.
Best Actor
Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling, La La Land
Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington, Fences
Winner: Denzel Washington, Fences
Whoo boy.
SAG doing what they do.
Good for Denzel. He deserved every bit of this.
This might also be a shot at Casey Affleck.
BAFTA’s gonna make this interesting. If Casey Affleck wins that, it’s probably locked. If not, then we’ll have some fun with this.
Best Ensemble
Captain Fantastic
Fences
Hidden Figures
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight
Winner: Hidden Figures
That makes sense. They like going with stuff like this.
Happy for them. Doesn’t change anything, but it’s nice.

So we had some wrenches thrown. Best Actor and Best Actress just opened up a bit. The Supporting categories seem locked, but the lead categories are open for business. It’s definitely fun when things are interesting. Since we’re gonna have a lot of locks this year due to the big Best Picture favorite. So to have a few categories to have to think about, it’s nice.
Notes on Best Actor:
“BAFTA’s gonna make this interesting. If Casey Affleck wins that, it’s probably locked. If not, then we’ll have some fun with this.”
=====
Denzel wasn’t nominated at BAFTA, though. (Viola, on the other hand, did get nominated.) If Casey wins, it’ll still be up in the air. If someone other than Casey wins, then Denzel is going to take the Oscar.
