2017: The Year in Reviews (The Wrap-Up)

We’ve got all the reviews, now let’s get to my favorite part — throwing it all together and seeing what it all means.

This is where I get to mess with percentages and see how right I was. I get to satisfy my weird fascination with numbers and my ever-present narcissism. Who doesn’t like that?

Here’s all the articles, for easy reference:

The caveat I always mention with this article is: the article is never finished the moment it goes up. I will update it as I finish watching the last of the movies of the year. That tends to happen around mid-January.

2017 Films I Skipped

Annabelle: Creation, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, Jigsaw, Rings, Underworld: Blood Wars

2017 Films I Haven’t Seen Yet

I have seen 439 movies thus far in 2017. Last year’s 411 movies was something I thought I’d never top. And now here we are.

With 5 movies from this year I haven’t seen, that gives me a 98.9% completion rate. This percentage is always dicey, since obviously I didn’t see everything, but in terms of the major/wide releases, last year I didn’t skip a single one and hit 100% on those. Which is something I wanted to do once. Now, I don’t really care so much about the percentage and will probably start phasing that out. Really, the idea is that I don’t skip a whole lot of stuff that comes out. It’s pretty much all sequels to stuff I haven’t seen or don’t care about or horror movies. That’s almost always the extent of what I skip. Otherwise, when I say I watch everything, you best believe I’m really doing it.

For those who don’t know the basics, here’s a quick rundown of what each of the ratings means:

  • 0 stars — “Fuck that movie!”
  • 1/1.5 stars — “What a piece of shit that was.”
  • 2 stars — “It was really bad.”
  • 2.5 stars — “Ehh. Not for me/Whatever.”
  • 3 stars — “It was fine.”
  • 3.5 stars — “It was solid. I liked it.”
  • 4 stars — “It was great.”
  • 4.5 stars — “LOVED that movie.”
  • 5 stars — “It might be my favorite movie of the year.”

Here’s a breakdown of what films were given what ratings.

2017 Ratings I Guessed More Than a Full Star Off

The Big Sick

2017 Films I Didn’t Preview in January (or Didn’t See)

78/52, Abacus: Too Small to Jail, Almost Friends, All the Money in the World, American Vandal, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, Annabelle: Creation, Bad Day for the Cut, Bad Grandmas, A Bad Idea Gone Wrong, The Ballad of Lefty Brown, Beach Rats, Best F(r)iends, Better Watch Out, The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales, Birdboy: The Forgotten Children, Bitch, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Bokeh, Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, Boo 2: A Madea Halloween, Boys in the Trees, Brawl in Cell Block 99, B.P.M., The Breadwinner, Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, Broken Mile, Bunyan and Babe, California Typewriter, CarGo, The Chamber, Chasing Coral, Christmas Inheritance, A Christmas Prince, A Christmas Story Live, Chronically Metropolitan, Churchill, Cinderella the Cat, City of Ghosts, Crooked House, Daddy’s Home 2, Dealt, Dean, Deep, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, Dirty Dancing, El Camino Christmas, Elizabeth Blue, Ethel & Ernest, Everything Beautiful Is Far Away, The Exception, Faces Places, A Fantastic Woman, Feed, Five Came Back, Foxtrot, Friend Request, Gangster Land, Geo-Disaster, Gilbert, Girl Asleep, The Girl Without Hands, Hampstead, Happy Death Day, Harold and Lillian: A Hollywood Love Story, Hired Gun, Hounds of Love, Human Flow, I Love You Daddy, I Tonya, Icarus, If I Were a Boy, Imperial Dreams, In This Corner of the World, The Insult, It Comes at Night, Jane, Jigsaw, Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond, Killing Hasselhoff, Kung Fu Yoga, LA 92, Last Men in Aleppo, Leap!, The Leisure Seeker, The Limehouse Golem, Literally Right Before Aaron, Little Boxes, The Little Vampire, Long Strange Trip, Love Beats Rhymes, Loveless, The Love Witch, Lucky, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, Mayhem, Mine, Moomins and the Winter Wonderland, Most Beautiful Island, Mr. Roosevelt, My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea, Napping Princess, The Newspaperman: The Life and Times of Ben Bradlee, Norman, On Body and Soul, One of Us, The Ottoman Lieutenant, Ozzy, Permanent, The Post, Raw, The Red Maple Leaf, Rememory, Rings, Rodney King, Score: A Film Music Documentary, A Silent Voice, Singularity, Small Crimes, Some Freaks, The Son of Bigfoot, Step, Strange Weather, A Street Cat Named Bob, Strong Island, Suddenly Seventeen, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale, Thelma, Thumper, The Ticket, Top Cat Begins, Tracktown, Tragedy Girls, The Tribes of Palos Verdes, Underworld: Blood Wars, The Unknown Girl, Unleashed, Voice from the Stone, Wakefield, Who We Are Now, The Wilde Wedding, Window Horses: The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming, Wish Upon, You Get Me (144)

Based on those numbers, of the 444 total films, I haven’t seen and/or previewed 144 of them. Which means we’re basing this total on 300 films.

Of the 300 films I guessed my ratings for 155 of them correctly. Which is 51.7%. Down a bit from last year’s 53.6%, but…

I guessed 132 of them within a half-star of my eventual rating. So, of 300 films, I guessed 287 either exactly or within a half star. Which is 95.7% of them. That’s over 2% up from last year.

There were only 12 movies I was a full star off on, and 1 I was more than a full star off on. Last year, I had 19 where I was a full star off and none more than a full star. So I did miss one a star and a half, but on the other hand, six less overall, which I’ll consider a win.

This year, I guessed how I’d rate 95% of movies within a half-star.

Average Ratings of all 2017 Films

Out of all 439 films I saw, there were:

0 5-star films

13 4.5-star films

39 4-star films

96 3.5-star films

177 3-star films

88 2.5-star films

25 2-star films

1 1.5-star film.

That comes out to an average rating of 3.08.

The average has been 3.15 the past two years, and was 3.13 in 2015. I’ve been saying this hasn’t been a great year for months now, and the overall rating reflects that.

– – – – –

Here’s a month-by-month breakdown of the year:

January

Underworld: Blood Wars — skipped; Arsenal — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Coin Heist — * * * (3 stars); Between Us — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Bye Bye Man — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Monster Trucks — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Mad Families — * * (2 stars); Sleepless — * * * (3 stars); The Book of Love — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Alone in Berlin — * * * (3 stars); The Crash — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Clinical — * * (2 stars); The Resurrection of Gavin Stone — * * (2 stars); Split — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); xXx: The Return of Xander Cage — * * * (3 stars); Detour — * * * (3 stars); Take the 10 — * * * (3 stars); A Dog’s Purpose — * * (2 stars); Kung Fu Yoga — * * ½ (2.5 stars); iBoy — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Resident Evil: The Final Chapter — * * * (3 stars)

With 21 films seen, January has an average rating of 2.67.

That’s par for the course for January. Almost every year falls within that same range. That’s really why I’m doing this, to illustrate how pretty much every month is like that.

Previous January ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.70
  • 2012 — 2.86
  • 2013 — 2.75
  • 2014 — 2.40
  • 2015 — 2.69
  • 2016 — 2.79

February

Rings — skipped; The Space Between Us — * * * (3 stars); Collide — * * * (3 stars); Two Lovers and a Bear — * * * (3 stars); Imperial Dreams — * * * (3 stars); War on Everyone — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Fifty Shades Darker — * * ½ (2.5 stars); John Wick: Chapter Two — * * * * (4 stars); The Lego Batman Movie — * * * (3 stars); Girlfriend’s Day — * * * (3 stars); A United Kingdom — * * * (3 stars); A Cure for Wellness — * * * (3 stars); Fist Fight — * * * (3 stars); The Great Wall — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Lovesong — * * * (3 stars); Get Out — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Rock Dog — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Bitter Harvest — * * ½ (2.5 stars); I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore — * * * ½ (3.5 stars)

With 18 films seen, February has an average rating of 3.03.

The interesting thing about February is that is was so bad in the first two years I did this and then has settled in to an almost automatic rating. This one is because of the rise of the VOD release. Since that, we’re almost automatically within the 2.9-3.0 territory.

Previous February ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.25
  • 2012 — 2.15
  • 2013 — 2.59
  • 2014 — 2.92
  • 2015 — 3.00
  • 2016 — 2.90

March

Logan — * * * * (4 stars); Before I Fall — * * * (3 stars); The Shack — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Wolves — * * * (3 stars); Table 19 — * * * (3 stars); The Ottoman Lieutenant — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale — * * ½ (2.5 stars); The Last Word — * * * (3 stars); Raw — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Kong: Skull Island — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Personal Shopper — * * * (3 stars); Bunyan and Babe — * * (2 stars); Brimstone — * * * (3 stars); The Other Half — * * * (3 stars); The Sense of an Ending — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Burning Sands — * * * (3 stars); The Chamber — * * * (3 stars); Beauty and the Beast — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Belko Experiment — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); T2: Trainspotting — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Song to Song — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Deidra & Laney Rob a Train — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); All-Nighter — * * * (3 stars); Power Rangers — * * * (3 stars); Life — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); CHiPs — * * * (3 stars); Wilson — * * * (3 stars); Prevenge — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Most Hated Woman in America — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Bokeh — * * * (3 stars); The Blackcoat’s Daughter — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Ghost in the Shell — * * * (3 stars); The Boss Baby — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Carrie Pilby — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Zookeeper’s Wife — * * * (3 stars); Five Came Back — * * * * (4 stars); The Discovery — * * * ½ (3.5 stars)

With 37 films seen, March has an average rating of 3.16.

March seems to be about the 3.05 range, depending on certain factors. Here, we had some big releases that were solid, and some above average Netflix movies that bolstered everything. I’d expect each year to be around 3.05, going higher or lower depending on how the giant releases and streaming releases go. The regular stuff tends to all be about the same place, but it’s the two extremes that push it one way or the other.

Previous March ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.70
  • 2012 — 2.80
  • 2013 — 2.98
  • 2014 — 3.14
  • 2015 — 2.89
  • 2016 — 3.21

April

The Case for Christ — * ½ (1.5 stars); Going in Style — * * * (3 stars); Colossal — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Smurfs: The Lost Village — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Salt and Fire — * * * (3 stars); We Don’t Belong Here — * * ½ (2.5 stars); The Ticket — * * * (3 stars); Win It All — * * * (3 stars); Aftermath — * * * (3 stars); Mine — * * * (3 stars); Gifted — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Assignment — * * ½ (2.5 stars); My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Their Finest — * * * * (4 stars); The Fate of the Furious — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Sandy Wexler — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Little Boxes — * * * (3 stars); The Lost City of Z — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Spark: A Space Tail — * * (2 stars); Tommy’s Honour — * * ½ (2.5 stars); A Quiet Passion — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Ozzy — * * (2 stars); Free Fire — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Promise — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Unforgettable — * * (2 stars); Sand Castle — * * * (3 stars); Tramps — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Circle — * * * (3 stars); Small Crimes — * * * (3 stars); Voice from the Stone — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Rodney King — * * * (3 stars); How to Be a Latin Lover — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Harold and Lillian: A Hollywood Love Story — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); LA 92 — * * * (3 stars); Sleight — * * * (3 stars)

With 35 films seen, April has an average rating of 2.89.

Right in line there. April is around a 2.9 historically, and we’re right in line with that.

Previous April ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.90
  • 2012 — 2.85
  • 2013 — 2.88
  • 2014 — 2.81
  • 2015 — 2.92
  • 2016 — 3.08

May

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Lovers — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Last Men in Aleppo — * * * (3 stars); The Dinner — * * * (3 stars); Chuck — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Norman — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Handsome — * * * (3 stars); 3 Generations — * * * (3 stars); King Arthur: Legend of the Sword — * * * (3 stars); Snatched — * * (2 stars); Lowriders — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Tracktown — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Wall — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); The Hounds of Love — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Manifesto — * * * (3 stars); Paris Can Wait — * * * (3 stars); Wakefield — * * * (3 stars); Alien: Covenant — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul — skipped; Everything, Everything — * * * (3 stars); Abacus: Small Enough to Jail — * * * (3 stars); Dirty Dancing — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Baywatch — * * (2 stars); The Red Maple Leaf — * * ½ (2.5 stars); Long Strange Trip — * * * (3 stars); War Machine — * * * ½ (3.5 stars); Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales — * * * ½ (3.5 stars)

With 25 films seen, May has an average rating of 3.06.

May seems to be settling in to a 3/3.05 range, which makes sense. Rare for anything over 4 to land here, and the major releases tend to be 3 or 3.5. The releases get bigger in May, so the floor tends to be 3, with the handful of 3.5s bringing it just over the line to hold around 3.05.

Previous May ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.81
  • 2012 — 3.10
  • 2013 — 3.22
  • 2014 — 2.98
  • 2015 — 3.02

July is up a bit from previous years, we had a nice handful of 4s land here and a 4.5, which is what did it. The summer tends to go in the 3.05/3.1 range. This is our first above average July in five years.

Previous July ratings:

With 41 films seen, August has an average rating of 3.01.

August seems to settle into the 2.9/3 range, since this is the dumping ground for VOD movies and bad blockbusters. It’s rare for it to go way above 3. Last year seems like a bit of an outlier. I’d expect 2.9-3.05 to be your average most years.

Previous August ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.80

With 47 films seen, September has an average rating of 2.89.

September is down slightly. Why? Shit ton of VOD movies. Many of which were not good. A lot of good movies bolstered this throughout, but this, more than a lot of months, has a lot of 2.5s, which brings you down. Labor Day is when all the VOD shit lands, and that brings the month’s average down.

This is an 2.9-3 month. The less generic VOD stuff you have, the more it can creep up to 3.05. Otherwise, you’re looking at just under 3 for the month.

Previous September ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.97
  • 2012 — 3.13
  • 2013 — 2.93

November is right in line. Down slightly, but that’s the VOD movies and the fact that the year is weaker than other years have been. We’re still right in line with where we usually are.

Previous November ratings:

  • 2012 — 3.66

With 40 films seen, December has an average rating of 3.31. Which again feels like it’s in line with where this month usually goes. Sometimes you get it bumped up closer to 3.5, but generally around 3.4 is where this is. The early month VOD releases keep this honest, otherwise with the abundance of Oscar qualifiers, it will start creeping closer to 4 territory.

  • 2011 — 3.8
  • 2012 — 3.7
  • 2013 — 3.67
  • 2014 — 3.37

The point of me posting this is to show you that there kind of is a quantifiable way to look at the months to gauge a film’s quality. Sure, there’s variance, but overall, you can pretty much gauge how good something is and what you’ll think of it quite easily. Sure, you can just eyeball it and basically get the same place. But if you look under the surface, there’s actual data to back that up. Which I think is really cool.

But anyway, that’s our year in reviews. You know what that means. The Unforgivables list is tomorrow. Place your bets.
