Oscars 2017: Makeup & Hairstylist Guild Nominations

So they announced the Makeup & Hairstylist Guild nominees a few days ago, which I totally spaced on because, with a shortlist, and a guild that only really started handing out awards in the last five years, what help is it really for guessing the Oscars?

But hey, I like them, and they randomly found out I type this up and send me press releases, which is cool, so I’m all down for this guild and these awards. I like when craft people get noticed for the great work they do.

So anyway, let’s get into what the guild nominated.

We’ll start by saying — this is your shortlist for the Oscars:

Bright
Darkest Hour
Ghost in the Shell
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I, Tonya
Victoria & Abdul
Wonder

Three of these seven will be nominated for the Oscar. I can probably tell you the winner of this before I tell you what the other nominees are gonna be. (Hint: It’s not Ghost in the Shell.)

Looking at what the guild did, they have five categories — Contemporary and Period Makeup, Contemporary and Period Hair, and then Special Effects Makeup. Makes sense. Like the Art Directors Guild and Costume Directors Guild, they specialize in the different areas, as they should.

Best Contemporary Makeup

Baby Driver

The Big Sick

Ghost in the Shell

Pitch Perfect 3

Wonder

Two of these are shortlisted, so they make sense. Not that it really matters, but I assume Wonder takes this, because the kid is under a prosthetic for the whole movie.

Best Contemporary Hair

The Big Sick

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Pitch Perfect 3

Wonder

The Big Sick is nominated in both. I don’t really get it… but sure. I just don’t remember specifically what makeup or hair is in that movie that stood out to me. But I guess that’s the point. These guys know way better than I do. Pitch Perfect at least makes sense, because everyone’s in a shit ton of makeup and has their hair done nice.

I imagine Guardians wins this, but who knows.

Best Period and/or Character Makeup

Blade Runner 2049

Bright

Darkest Hour

The Greatest Showman

I, Tonya

Darkest Hour is probably gonna win the Oscar, so I imagine it wins this.

Best Period and/or Character Hair

Atomic Blonde

Beauty and the Beast

Blade Runner 2049

Darkest Hour

I, Tonya

Rooting hard for I, Tonya. But Beauty and the Beast or Atomic Blonde (or even Blade Runner, I guess) could take it.

Best Special Makeup Effects

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Darkest Hour

The Shape of Water

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Wonder

Oh, I see. This is where Wonder might take it. Right? Because special makeup on the kid? But even still, Shape of Water, right? That fish man is all makeup and prosthetics.

Victoria & Abdul is the only film to not make this list, so I probably wouldn’t look to that to be nominated.

Right now, based on nothing, I’d say here’s your likelihood at a nomination:

1. Darkest Hour — I don’t see how it doesn’t win. This might be an Iron Lady scenario, where the winner takes the makeup team along with them. Oldman shouted them out already at the Globes. It’s in peoples’ heads.

2. Wonder — Because it’s a movie about a kid with a facial deformity. Mask won this category. Plus — it’s a really charming movie. So people won’t have that ‘it’s just a gimmick’ mentality toward it and might look to get it a nomination. Until it’s nominated, you have to consider something like this a favorite to make it on.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — The first one won. That’s why this is here over I, Tonya. It won, and it has a lot of blue and green people in it. Maybe they don’t care as much and it won’t be nominated. But just like Star Trek, if there’s a precedent, you probably wanna look at that. So I have this third, even though I’m not entirely sure this doesn’t get left off in favor of something else. Then again, Wonder could be the same way.

4. I, Tonya — Sucks this is here. Because this does feel like something that would be nominated. It’s just that the makeup job isn’t as showy as the other two. So while I’m firmly placing this in contention, I just think Wonder and Guardians have other factors going for them that place them above this for a nomination. Still might guess it in the end. The hair was incredible in this, and the makeup looked fantastic too in all the right moments. I would not be surprised in the least if this makes it on. In fact, it seems like it might even be considered a favorite in the end. (For the nomination. Not the win. I can’t see anything being considered a favorite over Darkest Hour.)

5. Bright — Should be higher, what with Academy Award winner Suicide Squad and all. But outside of the orc makeup, and elf stuff, what is there? I think they’re gonna take a hard pass on all things Netflix. Maybe I’m wrong. But that’s my gut. I’m gonna say no until it gets nominated. And then — “Academy Award nominee Bright.” Won’t that be a fun day?

6. Victoria & Abdul — The movie didn’t go over, and the guild didn’t even nominate it. Is it a dealbreaker? No. But at this point, would you take this over any of the other five?

7. Ghost in the Shell — Honestly only because Victoria & Abdul at least has some class to it. As much as I’d like to sarcastically tweet out ‘Academy Award nominee Ghost in the Shell’, I don’t see that one happening. Maybe it’s sixth, I still am not gonna guess it come predictions time.

– – – – – – – – – –

So yeah, that’s what I got. I imagine your category is some combination of 1-4. I’m not shocked if Bright makes it on, but I really like to think they won’t go there.

Oscar nominations are in three weeks, guys.
