Oscars 2017: CAS Nominations
The Cinema Audio Society also announced their nominations today, so we’re gonna talk Best Sound Mixing as well.
Sound Mixing, to remind you if you’re not all up on your categories, is the entire sound design in the film. Musicals do great here, as do war movies. Basically, if you assume Dunkirk and Baby Driver and probably Star Wars, then you’re most of the way there already. (And this is before I’ve even seen the list.)
Here are your CAS nominees for this year:
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The Shape of Water
Oh, yeah, Shape of Water.
Wow. So yeah, you can probably get 4 of these right.
Dunkirk will be nominated in both, Star Wars is likely to be nominated in both. Baby Driver is 50/50 as to whether it gets both, but I don’t see why not. Shape of Water… not sure if it gets both at this moment.
Wonder Woman… I feel like that could end up as an Editing nominee, but I could also see both. Not sure yet.
Blade Runner feels like it should stand a bigger chance here than it does. Then again… Editing is more where that one’s at. I can definitely see that one making Editing. Though typically the categories are 4/5 the same most years. Rarely in recent years have they gone less than 3. So it generally behooves you to assume both.
For this, look heavily at what CAS says, wait til MPSE and use them too, and then just basic logic. Chances are, most of this will be your category. Last year, they did 3/5. CAS went Doctor Strange, which I think we all knew probably wouldn’t happen, and they also went Sully, which felt more like an Editing than Mixing nominee (and that’s what happened), and then Arrival got on both lists (so always look to a big Best Picture nominee to make it on both. Fortunately this year, not too many Best Picture films that are sound design heavy, outside of the main two), and they swapped on 13 Hours, a war movie by Michael Bay, whose team always gets nominated. So really… big Best Picture nominees and people who they like. That’s how you figure out what will go different than the guild.
