Oscars 2017: CDG Nominations
The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations. Similar to the production designers — three categories: period, fantasy, contemporary. All of which will be focused into a singular category at the Oscars, mainly consisting of period and fantasy.
The one question we’re likely to ponder this year is — I, Tonya… contemporary or period? How long ago do we truly consider 1994, and just how old do we all want to feel?
I’ll leave that right there for you as we get into the nominees:
Excellence in Contemporary Film
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
There goes I, Tonya as contemporary. Maybe no one wants to admit that it was almost 25 years ago. And that’s when it ends. It starts in the 70s and 80s. If that was to get it nominated, sure. But I think we can consider this more of a period nominee and much more in contention than we normally would for a ‘contemporary’ nominee.
Otherwise, nothing else here has a particular shot. Especially when you see what else they nominated.
Excellence in Period Film
Murder on the Orient Express
The Greatest Showman
The Shape of Water
These five alone could be your category. And that’s before you factor in…
Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film
Beauty and the Beast
Blade Runner 2049
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Beauty and the Beast is a big contender. Most of the other Disney live-actioners have been nominated, especially the princess ones. Blade Runner is also in there too. Jedi probably won’t. Thor, no chance. Wonder Woman, slight chance, but very unlikely.

Thinking out loud about anything else… The Post. Doubtful, but always in contention. Victoria & Abdul can maybe make it, but a lack of guild love makes it difficult. The Beguiled is period. That seems unlikely now. Darkest Hour could maybe sneak in there if they love it. Mudbound probably needed the guild, though that seems like a one or two nominee film at best.
All around, I think you’re probably looking at… Phantom Thread, Beast, Shape of Water, and then… either Dunkirk, Orient Express, I Tonya, Greatest Showman or possibly Blade Runner (though I’m dubious about that at this moment in time). And I’ll consider Wonder Woman, but I doubt I’d ever guess that it gets on.
I think we’re in good shape here. Generally I’m nervous about Costume Design because they sometimes go totally off the board to not great films just because they had showy costumes. I’m not sure those movies exist this year. There’s no Jane Eyre, which misses everywhere else and gets a costume nominee. Victoria and Abdul is really that only contender for this year. I think, if things work out, you can probably get 3 or 4 right on the guesses.
