2018: The Year in Reviews (The Films That Didn’t Get Released)

So we jus spent twelve days going over everything that came out. Today we go over what didn’t.

At this point I track like 500 movies a year. Not all of them are gonna come out. A lot of stuff is gonna get pushed throughout the year. This is just me reorganizing that so I can be more targeted in a few weeks when I start over and start tracking for 2019. I can see if some movies look any closer to coming out, and decide which ones I want to stop tracking altogether.

So, this is a list of everything that was either pushed or hasn’t come out. I’ll tell you what each one is, look at what the current status is (if any) and decide whether or not it’s gonna be a part of 2019’s Film Release Calendar. Mostly this is record keeping for me, but should you be so interested, it’s all here.

Here are the films of 2018 that didn’t get released:

Above Suspicion

January’s preview:

“Philip Noyce directs, who makes solid movies. Emilia Clarke stars. Sure. 3 stars.”

Status:

It’s been done. I’m sure it’ll be out next year.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Yes.

Adam

January’s preview:

2.5 stars.”

Status:

Says it’s done, but no sign of a date.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Honestly, no. 2.5 stars in case, but this is just to keep the total of tracked movies from being too unwieldy. Leaving the standing rating will allow me to just see it if it ever comes out without having to constantly write it up.

The Aftermath

January’s preview:

3.5 stars. Sounds like it’ll be in the high 3/3.5 realm, so let’s take the positive route, especially since I love Keira.”

Status:

Dated April 26th

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’ll be in April’s article

Alita: Battle Angel

January’s preview:

“Going from James Cameron to Robert Rodriguez as director isn’t usually the best sign.”

“Looks overly CGI. And the story doesn’t seem that interesting. So I have to say 3 stars. I would like to get 3.5 out of this, but I’m not holding my breath.”

Status:

Dated for February 14th.

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’ll be in February’s article

3 stars.”

Status:

Still hasn’t shot yet.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Nope. Gotta shoot for me to care. 3 stars just in case. But I doubt it.

Angel Has Fallen

January’s preview:

“So it’s literally Air Force One, but with Gerard Butler stabbing people in the face.”

3 stars. This entire franchise is 3 stars. No reason to think otherwise for this one. What is it gonna be, the Logan of the franchise? You know what you’re getting.”

Status:

Dated for August 23rd

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’ll be in August’s article.

Anna

January’s preview:

“There’s no synopsis. Just says ‘will focus on an action heroine’. Why do I get the feeling that this is Luc Besson doing a Lucy shared universe?”

“It’s Besson, so 3 stars. Maybe we get 3.5, but let’s hedge our bets. I’ve got almost nothing to work on.”

Status:

No clue. Luc Besson’s in a weird place right now. Will someone release this?

Will I keep tracking it?:

Directors List. Gotta.

Arctic Justice

January’s preview:

“What the fuck? Why does this have a cast? This is by the guy who directed this did Spark: A Space Tail, which was a piece of shit.”

2 stars.”

Will I keep tracking it?:

I shouldn’t, but I will.

Status:

It came out in France in 2017. Still nothing over here.

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’s Polanski, so I have to.

The Beach Bum

January’s preview:

“So in.”

3.5 stars.”

Status:

Coming out March 22nd.

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’ll be in March’s article.

Benjamin

January’s preview:

“Bob Saget directed this.”

3 stars. I’d rather know as little about this as possible.”

Status:

Says 2019.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Yes. But only because Bob Saget directed it.

Berlin, I Love You

January’s preview:

“I’ve seen all the other ones, including Rio, which almost no one has seen, so I might as well keep going.”

3 stars. Should be fine. These movies are usually fine.”

Captive State

January’s preview:

“I like the set up. That doesn’t mean it’ll be any good.”

Status:

Dated March 29th

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’ll be in March’s article

City of Lies

January’s preview:

“Still can’t believe this happened.”

3 stars.”

Status:

They pulled it like two weeks out in September. So I’m thinking it’ll be dumped next year. Maybe, say… March 9th? (I know it’s a Saturday, but that weekend, maybe.)

Will I keep tracking it?:

Yes.

Cold Pursuit

January’s preview:

“Starring Liam Neeson. Yeah, boy.”

3 stars.”

Status:

Dated February 8th.

I don’t know what this is. I can’t find this movie anywhere. I guess it never shot and went away. Yeah, it’s just gone. They announced it last September and it never happened. Oh well.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Nope. That was easy.

A Dog’s Way Home

January’s preview:

2.5 stars. Family movie nonsense. Not even gonna pretend like I’ll care about this.”

Status:

Coming out January 11th

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’ll be in January’s article

Domino

January’s preview:

“This is a new Brian De Palma movie. Repeat, this is a new Brian De Palma movie”

3.5 stars. I’m down for De Palma.”

Status:

It’s done, but De Palma said something to the effect of “This film might never come out.”

Will I keep tracking it?:

Have to track it because of De Palma.

Donnybrook

January’s preview:

Freak Shift

January’s preview:

“Ben Wheatley movie. Already down.”

3.5 stars.”

“Wanna go 4, let’s stay 3.5, just because Ben Wheatley movies tend to go a bit lower than I think they will for me.”

Will I keep tracking it?:

Yes. Cast is too interesting to ignore.

George and Tammy

January’s preview:

3.5 stars.”

Status:

This never filmed.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Allegedly everyone is still attached, but this is looking less and less likely. 3.5 stars in case it ever comes out, but it has to film before I start paying attention again.

“I’m concerned. I’ve been concerned about this for years, and I’m still not over that concern.”

Not actively. It’s Derek Cianfrance, so I will always know when it’s gonna come out. But I can’t keep looking into this every year. Status:

They shot it, but it’s dated for March 2020.

Status:

It’s done, but mired in severe legal trouble.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Honestly, I can’t wait for the legal stuff to clear up. So 3.5 stars and we’ll reassess in a year if it doesn’t come out this year.

A Rainy Day in New York

January’s preview:

“This is Woody Allen’s new movie, and it might never come out now. Which is wrong. Just fucking put it out and let no one see it.”

3 stars is my blanket Woody Allen rating, so there we are.”

Will I keep tracking it?:

No. 3.5 stars just in case it films and comes out next year. But something tells me this doesn’t get filming anytime soon, and I can’t burden myself with a movie that may not ever film. 3 stars. Original musical overcomes anything that might sound not great about this. If anything it’ll be a broadway musical in ten years.”

Status:

Was supposed to be out October, then November, now there’s no sign. But there’s no way they don’t dump this 2019, if they were already that close.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Yes.

Status:

It’s done. I’m sure it’ll go day and date sometime next year.

Will I keep tracking it?:

John Travolta VOD movie. Hell yeah.

Trial by Fire

January’s preview:

3.5 stars. Zwick’s movies are usually solid.”

Status:

Played Telluride. Usually those films get an awards release. So this should definitely come out next year, one way or the other.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Directors List movie. Gotta.

The True Adventures of Wolfboy

January’s preview:

3.5 stars. Not sure why, just feel like I should.”

Will I keep tracking it?:

Yes.

Under the Silver Lake

January’s preview:

“I was in yesterday.”

4 stars.”

Status:

Scheduled for April 19th. I also have a copy, so this will be the first official film of 2019. (Technically I could have watched it and counted it for this year, but that’s just showing off.)

It’ll be in April’s article. And I promise I won’t watch it until after I write up that article.

Status:

Played Toronto 2017 and now a year-plus with no sign of a release.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Brie Larson directed it, so yes.

3 stars.”

Status:

Scheduled for February 8th.

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’ll be in February’s article

The Upside

January’s preview:

3 stars seems pretty certain on this. Do we think this will actually be good enough to get to 3.5? I’m doubtful. Let’s see what it can be.”

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’ll be in January’s article.

January’s preview:

3 stars. This might be the last year before I give up on it.”

Status:

It’s been at least three years on this one and still no clue.

Honestly, yeah. This might be the last year on this one though.

Vita and Virginia

Played festivals, should definitely come out in 2019.

Will I keep tracking it?:

Yes.

The War with Grandpa

January’s preview:

Here’s the deal — if it’s going for a family tone, it’s 3 stars. If it’s going for raunch and shit, 2.5 stars. I’m sticking with 3 because I just don’t know, and I’d feel bad if I guessed anything less than 3 on a De Niro/Walken movie.”

“God, I hope this isn’t offensively bad.”

Status:

It’s been done, they just haven’t put it on the release schedule. Which probably tells you everything you need to know.

With that cast? Yes.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle

Will I keep tracking it?:

Directed by Ralph Fiennes? Yeah.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

January’s preview:

“Sounds like they’re trying to get the cast while they’re still contractually obligated to do these movies.”

If you remember, we did Dark Phoenix in the Bret Ratner movie. Didn’t work out so well.”

“It’s X-Men, so I’m sure it’ll be fine. But this franchise has lost its luster. I just don’t care about the younger versions of the characters.”

“As much as I hate to say it — 3 stars. I’m sure I can get 3.5 out of this, but I wanted my rating to reflect just how much I don’t care that this is coming out or about anything that they’re doing. This franchise needs some time away or new hands.”

Scheduled to come out June 7th.

Will I keep tracking it?:

It’ll be in the June article.

Zeroville

January’s preview:

“Why do I track these Franco movies?”

3 stars.”

Status:

None. Apparently the distributor who picked it up went bankrupt, leaving it in limbo. Franco movies almost never come out.

Will I keep tracking it?:

No, I’m done. 3 stars in case it ever does come out, but I can’t with this anymore.
