The Films I’m Looking For

Somehow I never thought to do this earlier. Either way, it’ll serve as a good update for the site. I’ve been off watching stuff for the past month and a half and working on finally finishing all those top ten articles. I’ve also (and I am very excited about this), planned out a bunch of cool shit for next year, to the point where I think it’ll be one of those years where something will go up every single day, provided I don’t get overwhelmed with work and don’t die. Though pretty much anything is done under the hope of not dying in the meantime, so it’s really it’s if I have enough free time to pull it off. And also it is for next year, so, until then, you’re just gonna have to deal with what I’ve got now. You should have learned by now to never get your hopes up with me

I wrote up a whole thing last year, if I remember correctly, where I updated everyone on all the insane amount of shit that I was/am watching at any given time. Typically I spend most of the year working on all that, then November rolls around and I go into “year end” mode and focus solely on stuff from that year and getting all my lists and stuff together. Then January I’m so worn out from the grind of everything I usually don’t watch much. Plus that’s prime Oscar season, so I’m usually focused on that. Then end of January I catch up with the month’s worth of movies I didn’t start yet, spend the time through the Oscars catching up on those, then March starts the whole cycle again. Cool? Cool.

This article is gonna function as a reminder of all the crap I’m watching at any given time, mixed with something I’ve never really done before, save that first Oscar Quest article — list what movies I just have not been able to find yet. I always put it up first as an article to screenshot where I’m at for that particular moment (time capsule stuff), and then I keep the other article up for all time and edit it as I go.

Of course, the main thing I try to do in my free time is write. Of course, that’s not always something that goes smoothly, and sometimes you need a break after finishing one thing before you start another. So if that’s not happening, then typically I’m focused on watching stuff in my free time. I’m not someone who can just sit home and do nothing. I have to feel like I’m accomplishing something, especially if I’m not writing. So I almost always have a movie on, and it’s almost always gonna be from one of the below lists.

Also, since while I’m doing it, I don’t necessarily feel productive just watching all these movies, I’m usually also doing something else at the same time. A lot of the time, I’m writing stuff for this site. Now, I’m working on getting those top ten lists done. Next year, there’s gonna be a lot of stuff I’m working on. If I’m not doing that, typically I’m trying to find all the movies I’ve yet to get a hold of from my various lists. Which is what we’re focused on right now.

Before we begin — yes, I am aware that a nice handful of these movies are available on Amazon Prime or to rent from Youtube or wherever. However, I am working through my lists in a particular order, and it would be insane to be jumping all around unless I absolutely had to, given the breadth and depth of these lists. I generally prefer to have copies of movies so I can watch them when I’m ready to.

Now, the primary list I am working on finishing is the Oscar Quest. Or rather, the Complete Oscar Quest, as I’m now calling it, which is Mach 2. The original Quest was Picture, Director and the acting categories. Of course, give me a couple of years and I’ll try to top that. So currently, I’m working on seeing everything nominated for 19 of the 24 categories. That is, everything except Foreign Language Film, Documentary, and the shorts categories (Documentary, Live Action, Animated). The other 19 are the main categories and those last five are to an extent more specialized. I felt that was an appropriate expansion of the initial Quest that would basically take me to “everything” as far as most people are concerned. (Though if we’re being honest, the initial Quest already covered “everything” as far as most people are concerned. Now I’m probably just showing off.)

At the moment, I currently have 402 movies left before I’ve seen every (surviving) movie nominated in the primary feature Oscar categories. You can see every movie I still need to see from this part of the Quest here: The Complete Oscar Quest. From that list, I cam currently in possession of 376 of those films and am working my way through that list as you read this. The goal is to be at 250 by Memorial Day. That feels doable.

But anyway, that means there are 26 I still need to get a hold of. And here they are:

The Oscar Quest

    1. Glorious Betsy (1928)
    2. The Noose (1928)
    3. Sorrell and Son (1928)
    4. The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1929)
    5. The Cop (1928)
    6. Drag (1929)
    7. Sal of Singapore (1929)
    8. Wonder of Women (1929)
    9. The Case of Sergeant Grischa (1930)
    10. The Right to Love (1930)
    11. Reunion in Vienna (1933)
    12. Love Me Forever (1935)
    13. The Magnificent Brute (1936)
    14. Women in War (1940)
    15. Marie-Louise (1944)
    16. Hit Parade of 1941
    17. Mercy Island (1941)
    18. Music in Manhattan (1944)
    19. Three Russian Girls (1943)
    20. G.I. Honeymoon (1945)
    21. Hitchhike to Happiness (1945)
    22. Sunbonnet Sue (1945)
    23. A Cage of Nightingales (1945)
    24. Just for You (1952)
    25. Birds Do It, Bees Do It (1974)
    26. Half a House (1975)

Technically I have a copy of Marie-Louise, but there are no subtitles on it. So it doesn’t really count, unless I become fluent in French in the next year. Didn’t work taking six years of it in school, doubt it’ll happen now. Otherwise, three of those are from the original Oscar Quest (The Noose, Sorrell and Son, Drag), which I know only exist in print form in various archives. The other 23 are from this expanded Oscar Quest. Only three movies, post-World War II as well. Which sounds about right. But those are the Oscar Quest movies I am still on the lookout for, should anyone stumbling upon this have any leads.

A quick addendum to this, though — I got bored a couple of weeks ago and did something I thought would be fun. Now, my idea of fun, as you can guess from reading this article, is way different from most people’s. But a few weeks ago, while watching movies and needing to take a break from writing articles, I said to myself, “Even though I really don’t need to watch any of the shorts categories, it would be fun to do Animated Short. I wonder if I could ever even come close to finding copies of all of those…”

It was more a curiosity than anything. But if you’ve spent any time reading this site, you know where that sentence goes. Long story short, the cat is dead. I started looking for them one night at 8:30. Within 24 hours, I managed to get copies of all but ten total nominees ever. For reference, Animated Short goes back to 1931-1932. And know, my getting a hold of those was with the bare minimum of effort. I did not remotely go out of my way to look for these shorts the way I’m looking for everything on that list up there. Oh, and currently, I’ve gotten that number down to 3. So there are three Animated Short nominees before I’ve got them all (and I’m sure I will now complete that category too, because I can).

Best Animated Short

  1. Rippling Romance (1945)
  2. Hypothèse Beta (1967)
  3. Dedalo (1976)

If you ever look up the category of Best Animated Short and all the nominees, know that I am in possession of every single nominee except these three. And most of that was done within 24 hours.

Honestly, I just did it because Animated Shorts are usually very fun and worth watching. I am not gonna do Documentary Short, because I do not enjoy watching them and trying to get a hold of them feels like a lot of effort for minimal success for a category I don’t even like. HOWEVER…

I’m not gonna come out and tell you I did finish Documentary Short too. BUT… I did do Foreign Language. That category at least partially felt like I could count it among the major categories. I deliberately left it out of this Mach 2 version of the Quest because foreign language films are so much harder for me to get through and it would have made it feel too much like work. But, with the success of Animated Short, I felt like I could do respectively with Foreign Language too, and since I was in one o those moments where all the other stuff I was doing started to feel like work, I thought it would be a fun diversion.

You should also know that I am constantly laying the groundwork to eventually do stuff like this, whether it ever happens or not. This is one of the byproducts of needing to feel productive. I take on random project like this for myself to keep the brain excited. So I did list up all the Foreign Language nominees, save the ones that crossed over to other categories (which would have been covered by Mach 2) and the ones I’d seen already. That list was around 275 movies. Something like that. One Saturday morning, with the weekend ahead of me and nothing but movie watching on tap, I decided to see how many I could get a hold of. By Sunday night, I was down to 25 movies.

Now, because I need you to at least realize what that entails, this is FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM. Meaning that all the films, aside from finding them, needed to have subtitles. Which sometimes included me finding the movies on Youtube with no subtitles, and then finding a dozen subtitle files online and then figuring out which of them, if any, synced up to the picture. Go ahead and try it sometime. It’s not for the faint of heart. So yeah, I went from 275 to 25 after a weekend’s worth of work. The current total? 15.

Best Foreign Language Film

  1. The Village on the River (1959)
  2. Harry and the Butler (1961)
  3. The Important Man (1961)
  4. Raven’s End (1964)
  5. Portrait of Chieko (1967)
  6. First Love (1970)
  7. Hoa-Binh (1970)
  8. The Policeman (1971)
  9. The Truce (1974) (no subs)
  10. Nights and Days (1976)
  11. To Forget Venice (1979)
  12. The Boat Is Full (1981)
  13. ‘38’ (1986)
  14. Dust of Life (1995)
  15. The Grandfather (1998)

One of those is Prime wachable and two more for sure are available to rent. I do have four of them without subtitles as well. But yes, I now also have all the Foreign Language nominees for whenever (if ever) I decide to try to watch all of those as well. Meaning that, theoretically, I could eventually reach a point where I’ll have seen every (save a small handful) surviving Oscar nominee ever, save most of the categories of Documentary, Documentary Short and Live Action Short. And I’m gonna be honest… as completionist as I am, pretty sure those are not ones I can complete easily, and I don’t really feel the need to complete them. Maybe one day I will. Maybe I’ll get the opportunity to because the movies will fall in my lap. In that case, sure, I’d probably do it. But honestly, I don’t feel lacking without those categories. I didn’t feel lacking without Foreign Language or Animated Short. I just thought one would be fun and the other could kind of count toward the main categories, so I should be prepared to do it. But honestly, once I finish the 400 I have left and then maybe watch the Animated Shorts for fun… I’m considering the Oscar Quest totally done. Foreign Language is just there if I ever want to. I’ve got other lists to knock out.

Which, let’s move onto those.

The Oscar Quest is my primary list, and we’ll get to my secondary list in a second. However, there are two “for fun/eventually they will become something I work on” lists that are there. That’s part of that groundwork thing I was talking about. Those are the National Board of Review films and the Golden Globes. NBR is one I’ve been loosely working on the whole time. I love them and I think they’ve got great taste. So I always wanted to watch all their movies so I could write them up on here. Naturally, I gathered as many of the films as I could, so when I eventually ran out of other lists, that would become the primary list. As of this moment, I’m down to six NBR movies I’ve got to get a hold of.

National Board of Review

  1. Tol’able David (1930)
  2. Rango (1931)
  3. Mama Loves Papa (1933)
  4. The First World War (1934)
  5. The Unconquered (1954)
  6. The Finest Hours (1964)

Three of them are documentaries. One I know is available for rent and I think I should be able to track down another on DVD. Still, six is pretty damn good.

The Globes, meanwhile — they were a part of my initial Oscar Quest. That is, when I first started it, in the year before I started the website and was just watching movies. I had the Globes there as part of my initial tally, and then after a certain point realized I just wasn’t ready for the Comedy/Musical films. Which was the right call at the time. Now, however, I’m totally game. They’re not important enough for me to focus my attention on now, but they are there should they make it to the front of the line on lists. Once the Oscar Quest gets done, that will only leave a certain number of Globes nominees left, and I can see myself going, “That’s not so bad. I can do that.” But anyway, I’m currently down to 13 movies I need to get a hold of. (Though me trying to finish this list off is fairly new, so I haven’t really put forth much of an effort to find most of these.)

Golden Globes

  1. Stars and Stripes Forever (1952)
  2. My Son, the Hero / Los Hermanos Del Hierro (1962)
  3. The Conjugal Bed / L’Ape Regina (1963)
  4. Il Diavolo (1963)
  5. The Paper Man (1963)
  6. A Global Affair (1964)
  7. Kazablan (1973)
  8. The Rose Garden (1989)
  9. Used People (1992)
  10. A Dangerous Woman (1993)
  11. A Map of the World (1999)
  12. Christmas in Love (2004)
  13. Nomad (2005)

So yeah, those are the “awards” lists.

There is one “main” list that I am constantly working off, even while working on all the other lists, and that’s my Directors List. Not only have I been working on that for at least seven years, it’s grown considerably since I first posted it. That typically dictates what I’m watching at any given time, since, even if the Oscar stuff is the primary, I’m watching it all through the lens of which crossover with the Directors List first. The goal is always to work on those. Before I made it a goal to finish the Oscar categories, I was working primarily on Directors List films. I remember managing to, for the time, at least (doubt that holds up now after I’ve added more directors to it), made it so there were no movies over either 120 or 130 minutes left to watch on the entire list. But like I said, I’ve been focused on the Oscar stuff for at least the past 14 months, so I don’t know where it’s at.

What I do know, however, is that I am constantly looking to have copies of as many of the films on that list as I can, so I can just start watching any of them at any given time, should the whimsy strike. As of Thanksgiving, I had around 930 Directors List movies left to find. Currently, that total is down to 565. Not bad for four and a half months. Also somehow still a round number.

Here’s that full list of what I’m still looking to get a hold of (some of which do crossover to the lists above):

So yeah. That’s where I’m at. There will be a list up above of all these (without all the rambling. The rambling just made it easier for me to put this out there and feel okay about it) at all times, which will allow me to have one place to reference everything I’m looking for, update it as I find more stuff, and keep it up there, should anyone know where I can get copies of some of these.

I’ll be back in a week or so with the first batch of reviews for 2019 and the plan is to get you most, if not all, of the Top Ten lists by the 4th of July. That’s the plan, anyway. I’m reserving the right to call “shit happens” if I end up doing actual writing instead.
