Oscars 2019: Annie Award Nominations

The Annie Awards were announced Monday. I waited to talk about them now, because I didn’t have an article for today and because honestly, who cares? I mean, sure, it’s great for the people who work on these films, and that is very admirable. But in terms of the actual Oscar category for Animated Feature, these are pretty meaningless. At this point most people could guess 4/5 of the category sight unseen and all this is gonna do is maybe point us in the direction of the fifth nominee. Though I’d say that the Globes and BFCA will do a much better job of that than these will.

So really, we’re just about to look at how many nominations Disney and Pixar got.

Here are your 2019 Annie Award nominations:

Best Feature

Frozen II
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
Klaus
Missing Link
Toy Story 4

Oh, good for Klaus. I’m happy about that. And this could legitimately be your final category. I’m reserving that Klaus spot for possibly that, possibly some stuff that’ll be on the next category and possibly Abominable, which I don’t really believe in, but I’m not totally willing to toss out just yet before the Globes and BFCA nominations.

What wins? No clue. I guess Toy Story. But honestly, knowing this branch, they might even go How to Train Your Dragon. They’re weird like that. I honestly don’t even care what wins here, though Toy Story is the best animated film on this list for my money.

Best Indie Feature

Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles
I Lost My Body
Okko’s Inn
Promare
Weathering with You

Oh, nice. I’ve seen most of these. Promare wasn’t for me. Weathering with You was fine but didn’t do it for me the way Okko’s Inn did. I Lost My Body was pretty good. Very arty though. And Buñuel I still need to see.

In all, I would take Okko’s Inn, but if Weathering with You has any sort of chance at a nomination, it’s gonna win this category.

Best Direction

Frozen II
I Lost My Body
Klaus
Missing Link
Weathering with You

I always love Laika in this category, just because you have to really direct something like that. Not that the others don’t, but there’s a different dimension to it. I suspect Weathering with You might take this one because they want to seem trendy. Interesting that Toy Story didn’t make it.

But usually I think the winner of this ties into what their preferred film is at the top, in either category (usually Best Film more than Indie, but still).

Best Writing

Frozen II
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I Lost My Body
Toy Story 4
Weathering with You

I’m not sure I particularly love any of these. But I guess I would take Toy Story if I had to. My guess is they give this to either Weathering with You or, more likely, How to Train Your Dragon. But that’s just a wild guess based on nothing because I put no stock in this guild as an Oscar prognosticator and don’t follow their choices.

I Lost My Body being on yet again is interesting. I wonder if that stands an outside shot at a nomination. It doesn’t remotely feel like something they’d nominate in an open vote, but I guess I’ll have to keep it in the top 8/9 when I start narrowing down.

Though, also, considering this is the guild, I’ll wait a week and see if the Globes go for this at all. That’ll say a lot, if they do.

Best Editorial

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
Klaus

Missing Link
The Secret Life of Pets 2
Toy Story 4

Guessing this is Dragon or Toy Story that wins. Maybe they go Laika. No real preference.

Best Character Animation

Frozen II (Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, Sven)
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (Toothless, Light Fury, Hiccup, Deathgrippers)
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (Grimmel, Ruffnutt, Toothless, Light Fury, Hiccup, Baby Furies)
Klaus (Alva)
Missing Link (Multiple)

They nominated like every character. How can you do that? Shouldn’t it be either all of the characters or just one of the characters per nomination?

Best Character Animation (Live Action)

Alita: Battle Angel
Avengers: Endgame
Game of Thrones Ep. 8 “The Long Night”
Detective Pikachu
Spider-Man: Far from Home

Endgame. Alita a distant second. Pikachu was too hairy. Wasn’t Game of Thrones too dark for everyone to give a shit? And what’s the character in Spider-Man? The Elementals? Pass.

Best Character Design

Abominable
The Addams Family
Frozen II
Klaus
Spies in Disguise

I liked Klaus. Did NOT like Addams Family. Spies in Disguise looks standard. Abominable looked okay. Frozen was the same as last time. Don’t really care as long as Addams Family doesn’t win this.

Best Music

Away
Frozen II
I Lost My Body
Spies in Disguise
Toy Story 4

Only now just realizing that Away is showing up for the first time. And I had hopes it would be great. Not that it not being nominated means anything at all. That seems like it might have the best music, but I’ve yet to see it. I Lost My Body had great music. Not sure I particularly cared for Toy Story’s outside of the usual respect. Frozen I’m guessing is a no. So maybe the vote is I Lost My Body. No idea what actually wins.

Best Production Design

Abominable
The Addams Family
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
Klaus
Missing Link

Always Laika. Please no Addams Family. I’d accept anything but that.

Best Voice Acting

Abominable (Tenzing Norgay Trainor as Jin)
Frozen II (Josh Gad as Olaf)
Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus (Richard Horvitz as Invader Zim)
The Secret Life of Pets (Jenny Slate as Gidget)
Toy Story 4 (Tony Hale as Forky)

Tony Hale wins this, right? Also, does Jenny Slate get nominated for anyone she voices just because she has a distinct voice? Also Tenzing Norgay Trainor is Tenzing Norgay’s grandson, which is pretty awesome and should be more well known. First dude to summit Everest.

Best FX for Feature

Abominable
Frozen II

Missing Link
Toy Story 4
Weathering with You

Cool. Don’t really care what wins.

Best Storyboarding

I Lost My Body
I Lost My Body
Klaus
Missing Link

Missing Link

That’s not a typo. There are different storyboard artists up for the award.

So yeah. Those are the Annie Awards. No real shocks here. All the films I suspect are in contention are. Your category will be Frozen II, Toy Story 2, Missing Link and then two others. How to Train Your Dragon will almost certainly be one of the two.

And then you have the fifth spot, which will be either Abominable, Weathering with You, Klaus or I Lost My Body. Now we just wait for the other precursors to show where most of the support is.

Shaping up to be a pretty easy category. You know, outside of having no fucking idea what’s gonna win. But we deal with that part later. For now we’re just figuring out what’s gonna get nominated.
