2019: The Year in Reviews (The Wrap-Up)

We just wrapped up the year, month by month, and now we get to my favorite part… analyzing it all.

The last thirteen days were for everyone else, but today is for me. Today is where I see how well I guessed everything back in January, how all the films I saw this year shook out. Where all the ratings went, what the average ratings for each month were… stuff that I’ve been tracking for a decade now.

Here’s all the previous articles in a handy chart so you can crosscheck anything I’ve said to this point, should you want to:

My big note is always the same — this article is never finished when it gets posted. I’ll keep updating it for about the next month or so as I finish off the last of the stuff I’ve yet to see. For me, the year doesn’t really end until I start the new one, which is usually at the end of January. So I’ll be cleaning up the last of this year for the next couple weeks.

We’ll begin as we always do, with the total number of films I’ve seen this year: 443.

That number, of course, is going to go up, since I’m not nearly done with stuff from this year yet. I’d say expect a good 20-25 film increase on that total over the next month. I’ve already got 15 for sure that I just need to watch. The rest are ones I’m trying to get a hold of and things I’m hopeful to see before I close the book on this year and move on to 2020.

For reference, he are my annual totals for each year since the site began:

  • 2011: 178
  • 2012: 208
  • 2013: 237
  • 2014: 314
  • 2015: 345
  • 2016: 411
  • 2017: 442
  • 2018: 483

I sort of knew going in that this was gonna be the first year where the total number of films didn’t go up. I’ve been waiting for this year over the past few. It was unsustainable for me to keep increasing my totals.

I honestly expected last year to be the year we tapered off, but it turns out that last year I somehow (despite not watching a single movie for the first seven weeks of the year and being largely distracted for the majority of it) hugely increased my total. I realized about halfway through this year there was no way I was gonna match that one. I was consistently a month behind last year’s pace. So we leveled off and fortunately I no longer feel the (self-imposed) need to hit any kind of total. I’m just gonna watch what I want to watch. And it feels nice.

I only skipped one movie this year: Annabelle Comes Home. I seem to have gotten into a groove of not skipping anything anymore. Which is how it should be. At this point, pretty much all I ever skip are these horror sequels when I haven’t seen any of the previous ones. Annabelle, Insidious… it’s always those. Everything else I somehow watch.

And here’s the list of stuff I still haven’t seen but intend to see:

Now we get into the ratings portion of the program. I assign ratings for each film back in January based on what I think I’m gonna give each movie, and then I give them actual ratings when I see them. Here’s a breakdown of what each rating means, just so you can quickly gauge how I feel about each movie:

  • 0 stars — “Fuck that movie!”
  • 1/1.5 stars — “What a piece of shit that was.”
  • 2 stars — “It was bad.”
  • 2.5 stars — “Ehh. Not for me/Whatever.”
  • 3 stars — “It was fine.”
  • 3.5 stars — “It was solid. I liked it.”
  • 4 stars — “It was great.”
  • 4.5 stars — “LOVED that movie.”
  • 5 stars — “It might be my favorite movie of the year.”

And now here’s how all the films I saw this year shook out, ratings-wise:

Films I Haven’t Seen: Annabelle Comes Home, Portrait of a Lady on Fire

As you can see, we’re trending toward a middle. The floor has gone up. I’m less angry and bitter about stuff I don’t like and an more apt to go, “Ehh, whatever.” But also, generally I’m less inclined to give big ratings for things unless I’m absolutely certain of it. This feels like our first year with a five star in a while. At least since 2016, I’m thinking. But whatever. It’s not like I try to do this. The rating is whatever comes out of me when I see it and when I reconsider it at the end of the year.

This all feels about in line with what happened last year. I generally end up not previewing around 150 movies each year, between foreign stuff and documentaries, things I discover along the way plus stuff they shoot and put out after I’m done previewing it all, and we’re in that general area. So nothing surprising there. I’m at 140 not previewed, and that could go up 5-7 more.

Last year I didn’t preview 146 movies, guessed 219 exactly, 108 a half-star off, 4 a full-star off and none more than a full star. This year, I had the same four full-star off films, 90 a half-star off and 217 exact. And again, none more than a full star off. That is something I seem to have eliminated from the repertoire. The complete whiff.

I’m trying to get zero that are a full star off, but there’s always gonna be abject disappointments and total surprises. Looking at this year’s — Lucy in the Sky I probably should have gone 3.5 on, but I thought there was gonna be space. Had I known no space, I’d have gone lower. Goldfinch I stand by, that just was disappointing. Klaus I understand. I assumed generic/bad animation and the Christmas aspect was enough to turn me off and go lower than 3. And Brian Banks… that should have been 3 stars. That movie just sucked. So yeah, it happens. I was wrong on all of them, but I can understand why I was. I don’t think I’m ever gonna fully eliminate those from a year. That would be like bowling a 300. You don’t expect it, but you hope it can happen one day. I was happy to get 100% completion that one year and don’t feel the need to recreate it, so here’s hoping I can achieve everything either exact or a half-star off.

But anyway, let’s break down those numbers:

  • 217 Exact
  • 90 Half-star off
  • 4 Full star off
  • 134 Unseen or not previewed

So in terms of the films that came out, I previewed 311 films. All the other stuff I previewed is gonna be rolled over into next year’s release calendar or will get a blanket rating so I don’t have an unwieldy list. And, of course, there’s the stuff I didn’t preview that came out and I saw. But 311 is the total number of films I guessed ratings for that came out.

I wrote up all the articles in January, guessed ratings and forgot about it. Then I watched everything and rated it all as I saw it. I wrote up reviews throughout the year in April, August and December, and then over the past two weeks I compiled everything to see how I did. And here’s how that all played out:

Of the 311 films I previewed that came out, I guessed 217 of them exactly. Which is 69.8%. I was at 66.1% last year and generally hovered around 50% before that. So it’s all great.

I guessed 90 within a half-star of my eventual rating. Which means that I guessed 307/311 films either exactly or within a half-star of my eventual rating, with those lone four films being ones I guessed a full star off. That’s 98.7%. Last year I was at 98.8%, 2017 was 95.7% and I had 93% in 2016. So I’ve definitely gotten to the point of near-perfection at this stuff.

Really, to me, the impressive part is having only four be a full star off. And of course, none more than that. Anything under 5 is insane. I assume 5-10, but under 5 is just nuts.

So now, I guess, the goals moving forward are to try to get 75% correct straight up and to have zero films more than a half-star off. I suspect those will not occur in the same year, if they happen at all, but hey, we all need goals.

Previous March ratings:

April had 42 films and an average rating of 3.07.

3 is the baseline for April, so this is expected. The highest we’ve ever gone in April is 3.08, so we’re technically around the best April ever. Though a lot of that is owing to Fosse/Verdon. But still, we’re within the same range we always are, so no real surprises.

That’s two years in a row with a 3.02 and the third time overall we’ve had that. Generally May hovers between 3 and 3.1, so it’s about where you’d expect it to be.

June has 31 films and an average rating of 3.11.

This is about par for the course for June. The big summer blockbuster months tend to trend toward a 3/3.1. Occasionally we’ll get into the 3.2s, but we’re about in the range for what I’d come to expect for a summer month.

Previous June ratings:

  • 2011 — 3.10
  • 2012 — 3.06
  • 2013 — 3.03

July has 27 films and an average rating of 3.13.

Slightly higher than most Julys. July tends to be the most ‘flat 3’ month, owing to it being the prime of summer and all the generic studio stuff coming out then. This is only the second time ever we’ve been in the 3.1 range. Typically it’s either at 3 or just above or below it. Or, if it’s a really good July, we’re 3.2 or so. But around 3.1 is the baseline for July, so again, we’re trending toward that median.

Previous July ratings:

  • 2011 — 3.10
  • 2012 — 3.31
  • 2013 — 2.84
  • 2014 — 2.95

August has 50 films and an average rating of 2.97.

August has been hovering around an even 3 every single time. It’s been just over most years, owing to all the VOD stuff, but this year I got to 50 movies and most of them were generic, which is what brought the average down, otherwise I suspect with a few of those taken of we’d probably be in the 3.03 or so range. Minor differences, but this is the exact median for this month. So again, all within the expected norm.

Previous August ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.80
