Oscars 2019: VES Nominations

Okay, as we await the DGA nominations, here are your VES nominations for this year.

This is Visual Effects and here is the shortlist we’re all working off:

Alita: Battle Angel
Avengers: Endgame
Captain Marvel
Gemini Man
The Irishman
The Lion King
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Terminator: Dark Fate

Basically five of these are locked, with Alita a probable sixth. I suspect we should look for Avengers, Irishman, Lion King and Star Wars on the Best Effects category, with Alita the fifth nominee, and then 1917 in Supporting Effects. Once we see that, then we can eliminate everything else and basically know what’s gonna happen all the way through.

Here are your VES nominees:

Best Effects

Alita: Battle Angel
Avengers: Endgame
Gemini Man
The Lion King
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Best Supporting Effects

The Aeronauts
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman

Oh, got it. Took the categories together to make better sense of it. Irishman counts as Supporting, which opened the door for Gemini Man to get in. Basically, unless something’s coming out of nowhere, which I think is like, maybe three or four nominees total over the past decade, it’s gonna be nominated on one of these two lists.

So right now: Avengers, Lion King, Star Wars, 1917, Irishman, Alita, Gemini Man. Those are your 7. And considering everything but Gemini Man has other major precursors, your split is pretty easy to figure out, isn’t it?

I wanna see how well Alita does on this list, though, because I suspect it could eventually be a nominee in the end. Though guessing what gets left off instead (Irishman, methinks, or 1917. More so the latter, but I’m not ruling out either) will be interesting.

Okay, what else we got:

Outstanding Virtual Cinematography

Alita: Battle Angel
The Lion King
The Mandalorian – “The Prisoner”; The Roost
Toy Story 4

Cool. More of that. Lion King’s cinematography was stunning, so that’s not surprising. There’s another Alita nomination. That’s gonna be interesting.

Outstanding Animated Character

Alita: Battle Angel (Alita)
Avengers: Endgame (Smart Hulk)
Gemini Man (Junior)
The Lion King (Scar)

Alita again. Avengers, Lion King. Gemini Man was guaranteed to be here of anything else because that’s literally the extent of its major effects. It’s funny that the digi-Will Smith is considered major effects but every face in The Irishman for the majority of the film isn’t. But hey, whatever.

Outstanding Created Environment

Aladdin (Agrabah)
Alita: Battle Angel (Iron City)
The Lion King (The Pridelands)
Motherless Brooklyn (Penn Station)
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pasaana Desert)

Oh man, that Penn Station set was nice. Good for them for shouting it out.

Otherwise, Alita, Lion King, Star Wars. I’m noticing a trend.

Outstanding Effects Simulations

Dumbo (Bubble Elephants)
The Lion King
Spider-Man: Far from Home
(Molten Man)
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Bubble Elephants. That’s what they’re called? Sure.

Molten Man is a fun name, too.

But yeah, Lion King, Star Wars. Those are locked.

Outstanding Composting

Alita: Battle Angel
Avengers: Endgame
Captain Marvel
(Young Nick Fury)
The Irishman
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

That’s our first Captain Marvel nomination. So that seems unlikely. We’re basically six deep in the category, and Gemini Man is the seventh no one expects but theoretically could. That’s pretty straightforward.

There’s also a Special (Practical) Effects category that’s got two TV nominees, the Magic Carpet from Aladdin and just Terminator: Dark Fate in general. That’s the only real shortlisted film in that category. So it’s only managed teh one nomination and seems all but guaranteed to not get nominated at the Oscars.

Along with Cats. Which… yeah.

Who’d have thought a cat unzipping its skin to reveal more cat skin in a different outfit would be weird and unsettling for people?

Animated Visual Effects

Frozen II
Missing Link
Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
Toy Story 4

Makes sense. There’s Klaus, though.

Outstanding Animated Character

Frozen II (The Water Nøkk)
Klaus (Jesper)
Missing Link (Susan)
Toy Story 4 (Bo Peep)

The Water Nøkk is a great name.

Outstanding Animated Created Environment

Frozen II (Giants’ Gorge)
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (The Hidden World)
Missing Link (Passage to India Jungle)
Toy Story 4 (Antiques Mall)

Outstanding Animated Effects Simulations

Frozen II

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
Toy Story 4

And cool.

Okay, so yeah, your Visual Effects category is gonna be Avengers, Star Wars, Lion King, Irishman and either 1917 or Alita. Maybe Irishman goes off, but something tells me it won’t. I think you’ve got either Alita or 1917 as the fifth spot, and I’m not sure if the BAFTA love will help 1917 get on. Revenant got on Visual Effects on the strength of a Best Picture run, but Dunkirk didn’t make it two years ago. And I thought those effects were way more effective than 1917’s in a lot of ways. So I’m thinking Alita makes more sense as the final choice than 1917. That might be how I guess. But we’ve got a week. Let’s wait for the DGA and then we’ll be set on precursors.

This the time I wait for each year. That weak of deliberation and me writing everything up in a giant article… can’t wait.
