B+ Movie Blog: The Top Tens of the Decade Lists

We just finished an entire decade in film and I covered it all on this site. Of course this was going to happen.

It’s been a while without proper content on this site. Granted, the bits I did do over the past year-plus are all things that are going to be permanent resources on this site. I wrote less overall, but what’s there will stick around longer. And I’m happy with that. This year, though, this being the tenth year of this site’s existence and the end of a film decade… why not recap the decade?

What I did (I even started working on this last spring because I was so excited about it) was go through the entire past decade and gathered my favorite films in a bunch of different categories. So starting tomorrow, we’re going to introduce our first list. I still have the rest of the Release Calendar to get to, because the shortened Oscar season didn’t allow me to get past February on that. But I figured let’s introduce the feature now and slowly roll it out over the two weeks it’s gonna take us to clear those articles. Because once that’s done, it’s nothing but Top Tens of the Decade lists through the end of the summer.

The first list, which will get kicked off in about an hour or so, is my Favorite Original Songs of the Decade. I went back and picked the 200 original songs from 2010-2019 that I liked best. This list in particular is going to be unveiled differently than the others, partially because I need to finish those other articles I mentioned and partially because there are exactly 200 days between tomorrow and August 31st. So what I’ll do is post one song, every day, over the next 200 days. And then as we get to the end, I’ll post the full list the way I’m gonna post all the others. But for now, think of it this way: for the next six months you’re getting both a Pic of the Day and a Song of the Day. That’s pretty awesome.

A lot of the other lists will be offshoots of things I already do on this site annually. Performances, Directorial Efforts, Posters, Scores, Trailers. I’m also doing a list of Documentaries, one of Animated Films and one of Animated Shorts, because there’s always a lot of those I love. I’m also doing a list of Hidden Gems of the Decade, which is mostly me talking up movies I feel deserve more praise/views than I think they’ve gotten to this point. And then the big one — my Top 500 Films of the Decade. Which is basically me taking my annual Top Ten lists, throwing them all in the same bowl and then making a big list from that.

There’s not going to be a lot of new information necessarily. If somehow you remember all of the lists I’ve put out each year, I’m sure 95% of the choices will be exactly the same. But I’m interested in seeing how I rate things when taken as an entire decade and not just a single year. Maybe my Top Ten for the decade will be half films from just 2015. I don’t know.

I also wanna see how my opinions have changed over the decade. I endeavored to create each list totally fresh, going through everything I saw this past decade and considering it all as if I was making each list for the first time. My original lists were only consulted to make sure I didn’t exclude anything on them. That’s why I started compiling everything last year. I didn’t want to be influenced whatsoever by what I did in the past. I’m not interested in what I said then, just how I feel now. So I compiled my choices and looked at the previous lists, then left everything alone for five months so I could forget it all. And as I sat down last month, I ranked everything as I felt then, unencumbered by everything else. Which hopefully gave me the most honest, accurate lists possible. If they wildly contradict what I said earlier, that’s fine. That’s the beautiful thing about time. Things change.

And, of course, like always, the real goal of this and most things I do on this site is to celebrate all the great movies that have come out and hopefully get people to find some things they never knew about or thought to watch before. If my lists give you even one movie you see and love and start showing to your friends, then they were a resounding success.

For logistics purposes, tomorrow I’m gonna start posting the last of the 2019 Release Calendar. After that, the lists will begin in proper, abiding by the schedule below (subject to ‘shit happens’, of course):

But for now, let’s just enjoy the lists.
