2020: The Year in Reviews (The Unreleased Films)

And now for the bookkeeping. We went over all the stuff that did come out, now for all the stuff that didn’t.

I always cover way more films than actually come out. Most years I’d say there’s about 100-150 that don’t end up coming out for various reasons. Last year was around 140. This year we’re at least 90-100 films above that. Of course, we all know why, but that just means we’ve got an abundance of stuff to deal with presently. Which, as I said, is just bookkeeping. The real interesting step is gonna be when we start going over next year, when we consider how few things shot this year and whether that affects next year’s totals.

But, before all that, let’s go over all the stuff I previewed that didn’t come out this year.

10 Double Zero

January’s preview:

“The problem with these recent Cage VOD movies is, there’s been no spark behind most of them. They’ve either been 3-star watchable or 2.5 star uninspired. And I don’t even know which one I’m gonna get.”

“I should also mention that this one hasn’t officially been shot yet, so there’s a chance this gets shot later on and becomes an early 2021 VOD release for Cage, who seems to build them up and then have them get released over like five consecutive months.”

“I guess I’ll go 3 stars, the automatic Cage rating, and see what happens.”

Status:

This still hasn’t shot, and it appears as though Cage is no longer attached.

Will I keep tracking it?: Nope. No Cage, no go.

12 Mighty Orphans

January’s preview:

“Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall are in this. So that’s cool.”

3 stars.”

Status:

Says it’s done, but otherwise no update.

Will I keep tracking it?: For those two, sure.

About Endlessness

January’s preview:

3.5 stars.”

Status:

It doesn’t appear to have come out anywhere that I know of, but it could any time.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Adam Leon Project

January’s preview:

“Sight unseen, I’m totally willing to go 3.5 stars here.”

Status:

This appears to be called Italian Studies. But otherwise no update. I imagine a festival next year for this.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

After Yang

January’s preview:

“Columbus looked really nice, even if I didn’t particularly love it. This plot sounds more up my alley.”

“Let’s go 3.5 stars.”

Status:

This should for sure come out next year.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yup.

All Rise

January’s preview:

“I’d normally go 3.5 stars on this, but the now-two year holdover is really concerning to me, so I’ll say 3 stars. If the film was really as good as the cast makes it seem, they’d have released it by now.”

Status:

It played Sundance 2018 and then nothing happened. This is in that dead zone.

Will I keep tracking it?: No. But 3 stars in case it ever comes out. Cast is too good to ignore, but I also can’t keep tracking everything.

All Star Weekend

January’s preview:

3 stars I guess has to be the rating, without having seen more. It’s hard to know just how this is gonna come together or if it’ll even be coherent or just famous people having fun together. I just don’t know, but I’m interested in seeing it.”

Status:

It’s been done for at least a year. So I don’t know what the deal is.

Will I keep tracking it?: One more year. It has to come out this year, right? Maybe they’re saving it for the NBA All-Star game?

Annette

January’s preview:

“I can’t believe this finally got made.”

“I’m so in on this. 3.5 stars. Can’t fucking wait.”

Status:

Amazon is gonna put this out in 2021.

Will I keep tracking it?: Hell yeah.

Antlers

January’s preview:

“Seeing a trailer, it looks really solid. But because it’s horror, I really don’t know what I’m getting. So I’m gonna say 3.5 stars. I’ll trust my gut on genre over director. Even though I know Cooper’s probably earned the benefit of the doubt on this.”

Status:

It had a date but then they pulled it. It’ll come out next year, the question is when.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Army of the Dead

January’s preview:

“I’ll go 3.5 stars and hope it’s not another Sucker Punch.”

Status:

Netflix will have this out in 2021 for sure.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

The Asset

January’s preview:

3 stars. Can’t ever assume more than that with a thriller like this, but that cast is awesome.”

Status:

It’s dated for 4/23.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yup.

As Sick as They Made Us

January’s preview:

3.5 stars.”

Status:

I don’t see this as having shot yet. But it was shopped around last November at the film market. So maybe this was gonna go and then couldn’t because of the pandemic?

Will I keep tracking it?: I guess one more year. If it doesn’t shoot after this year, it’s over.

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar

January’s preview:

“When I heard the title, I could have sworn Aubrey Plaza was starring in this. Is it just me who thought that?”

“It’s a Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo movie. Which, for some people, means, ‘Oh shit, they’re doing another thing after Bridesmaids!’ And for me, it’s that same sentence, only without the explanation point and with a very different tone.”

“Honestly, I’ve got no faith in this to be good. 2.5 stars. Maybe it gets to 3. 3.5 would shock me. But knowing me and comedy, I’m just gonna aim low. The smart move is 3, but honestly… I hate these studio comedies. I know what’s most likely to happen here.”

Status:

Dated July 16th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yup.

Benedetta

January’s preview:

“I’m gonna say 3 stars, just because… I didn’t really care for Elle all that much, and past the fact that it’s lesbian nuns, I’m not sure what I’m getting out of this that I’m gonna care about.”

Status:

This’ll play Cannes, I’m sure.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Bergman Island

January’s preview:

“Seeing as how this feels like it can be one of those psychological thrillers I generally don’t go for, I can’t guess more than 3 stars. Hope it’s good, but I just don’t know.”

Status:

I’m sure this’ll come out this year, or at least go to festivals.

Will I keep tracking it?: Sure.

Bernstein

January’s preview:

“Bradley Cooper writers, directs and stars. That’s all I need.”

4 stars.”

Status:

He’ll shoot this during the year. He’d have had it done by now were it not for the pandemic.

Will I keep tracking it?: Hell yeah.

Best Sellers

January’s preview:

3 stars.”

Status:

Quietly in post. No updates. One of those eventual VOD films.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Big Gold Brick

January’s preview:

“Genre-bending can go a couple of different ways, so let’s say 3.5 stars on possibility and hope it achieves it.”

Status:

No update, but it’s ready to go.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

BIOS

January’s preview:

3.5 stars. I hope this is solid.”

Status:

Dated for April 16th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yup.

The Birthday Cake

January’s preview:

3 stars. Actors writing vehicles for themselves rarely turns out okay, though Ewan McGregor being in this gives me hope it’ll be passable.”

Status:

Done, but no update.

Will I keep tracking it?: One more year.

Black Widow

January’s preview:

“I mean, it’s Marvel. That means automatic blanket 3.5 stars.”

Status:

Dated May 7th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yup.

Blast Beat

January’s preview:

“I mean, sure. Let’s say 3 stars.”

Status:

Played Sundance, nothing since. But I’ll give a pandemic allowance.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Blithe Spirit

January’s preview:

“This should be fun.”

“I mean, I can’t guess more than 3 stars, but I love the cast and I think this can be fun.”

Status:

Dated February 19th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Blonde

January’s preview:

“I can’t believe he finally got this made.”

4.5 stars. This is probably in my top five most anticipated movies of the year. Dominik has yet to make a film less than great.”

Status:

Netflix will put it out this year.

Will I keep tracking it?: Fuck yeah.

Blue Bayou

January’s preview:

“Honestly, I don’t even need to know what this is about. 3.5 stars. He’s established himself as a guy who makes solid movies.”

Status:

Possibly dated for June 25th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Bob’s Burgers: The Movie

January’s preview:

“I guess I’ll say 3 stars.”

Status:

Dated for April 9th.

Will I keep tracking it?: If it’s dated, then sure.

Born to Be Murdered

January’s preview:

“Great title. It’s a Third Man quote.”

3.5 stars. The title and cast sold me.”

Status:

It’ll come out this year.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

A Boy Called Christmas

January’s preview:

3 stars.”

Status:

Netflix is gonna put this out. Probably next holiday season.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Breaking News in Yuba County

January’s preview:

I mean, I guess… 3.5 stars? I don’t really know, but I figure it should be decent with that cast, right?”

Status:

Dated February 12th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Brother’s Keeper

January’s preview:

3 stars because it’s football. But nothing about this leads me to believe it’s gonna be remotely good past that.”

Status:

Retitled Under the Stadium Lights. No update other than that.

Will I keep tracking it?: One more year. But ONLY because of Laurence Fishburne.

C’mon C’mon

January’s preview:

“Given Mills’ output, I can’t guess less than 3.5 stars here. So that’s where I’m going with it. He makes good movies.”

Status:

This will 100% come out next year.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Candyman

January’s preview:

“Because the cast is nice, because there’s a female director and because they are trying to say something with this, I’m gonna guess 3 stars, although there’s a real probability this will only be 2.5 stars for me, mostly because it takes a lot for me to give a shit about horror.”

Status:

Dated August 27th

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

The Card Counter

January’s preview:

3.5 stars. I hope it’s amazing.”

Status:

Finished but no date.

Will I keep tracking it?: It’s Paul Schrader. Fuck yes.

Cash Truck

January’s preview:

“I was in on Guy Ritchie, but if you’re giving me Statham too, I mean…”

3.5 stars.”

Status:

This is apparently now titled Wrath of Man and is apparently gonna come out January 15h.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Cherry

January’s preview:

“Given their ability to focus on story and not get bogged down with effects and things, I think I can safely guess 3.5 stars here. The worst I’m getting is 3. There’s no way they directed four Marvel movies without bringing something to the table.”

Status:

Apple TV+ has this dated for March 12th, with a theatrical release February 26th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Clifford the Big Red Dog

January’s preview:

“I can’t believe they made this.”

“You know what? I’m gonna regret this, I know, but 3 stars. I know I should say 2.5, but I did enjoy the Clifford books when I was five, so let’s assume it’s cute and I’ll be fine with it. I know it’s dumb, but the heart wants what it wants.”

Status:

Dated November 5th

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

The Comeback Trail

January’s preview:

“Starring Robert De Niro and Morgan Freeman and Emile Hirsch and Tommy Lee Jones. And I know what you’re thinking, ‘Weren’t Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman in one of those ‘old dude’ movies recently?’ Yes. Yes they were. And let’s not forget Last Vegas. These guys just like to work, so don’t hate on them for that.”

3 stars. How can you assume anything but with this cast? It sounds like a generically okay comedy for the 60 and older crowd. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

Status:

They pushed this into 2021, so it’s just a matter of when.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Coming 2 America

January’s preview:

3.5 stars. Not going higher than that on the guess, but boy, would I like the actual rating to go higher than this. I could use a great Coming to America sequel.”

Status:

March 5th, it’ll be on Amazon Prime.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

2.5 stars.”

Status:

Dated June 4th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yup.

Connected

January’s preview:

“This seems boring, so 2.5 stars. If it even comes out, I promise I either won’t care or will shrug and go, ‘Yeah, it was fine’.”

Status:

It’ll come out next year, just a matter of when.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

The Courier

January’s preview:

“Because it’s a Cold War spy movie, I have to guess 3.5 stars, even though there’s a pretty decent chance I may only get 3 here.”

Status:

Dated February 29th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Death on the Nile

January’s preview:

“Dope. Another one.”

“I really liked the first one a lot. The question is, do I think I’m gonna like this one as much. I’m gonna say no, and I’m gonna say that first one was a bit of an aberration.”

Status:

Dated September 17th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Deep Water

January’s preview:

“It’s based on a Patricia Highsmith novel, which is a good start. One of the writers created Euphoria and the other wrote Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. Which sounds like a perfect combination to me.”

“I kinda wanna say 4 stars. I mean, 3.5 feels most likely, but I’m going 4. Fuck it. What’s the worse that can happen?”

Status:

Status:

Coming out on Netflix January 29th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Dinner in America

Status:

It played a shit ton of festivals but then nothing.

Will I keep tracking it?: Sure.

Don’t Look Up

January’s preview:

4.5 stars.”

Status:

It’s filming now, so it’ll be out next year.

3 stars.”

Status:

Status:

Status:

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

El Tonto

January’s preview:

3 stars.”

Status:

Finished, no date.

Will I keep tracking it?: One more year. But that’s it.

Escape Room 2

January’s preview:

“Great, a sequel. To a movie that was just barely okay. The problem is, they can’t do anything interesting here. Just give you more escape rooms and then build up the ‘there’s a big evil villain behind it all’ angle. And I don’t care. The best this will go is 3 stars, but I can’t even guess that.”

2.5 stars. You got your surprise 3 out of me. Now you have to earn the next one.”

Status:

They were trying to shoehorn it into the end of this year but wisely thought better of that. Which means it’s only a matter of time before they dump this on us.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Eternals

January’s preview:

“It’s Marvel, so that means automatic 3.5 stars. That’s the standard Marvel rating. Only in exceptional cases does Marvel manage 4 stars, and that’s only been like, five times ever. I can’t assume that. So it’s 3.5 stars and we’ll assume standard Marvel fare like everything else.”

Status:

Dated November 5th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Status:

It was dated for February 26th but then they pulled it. But it’ll come out next year.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Falling for Figaro

January’s preview:

“Sounds pretty by-the-book. 3 stars.”

Status:

Played Toronto this year, so it’ll probably come out next year.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

False Positive

January’s preview:

“I’ll say 3 stars, but I don’t know if this is gonna amount to just another Rosemary’s Baby, or if it’s gonna do something else with a message behind it. I truly don’t know. So we’ll just wait and see.”

Status:

This sold to Hulu, so it’ll come out.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Fast 9

January’s preview:

“It’s a Fast and Furious movie. 3.5 stars. These movies are exclusively 3.5 stars. They’re dumb, they’re fun, and they just get crazier as they go along. We know the drill. Why change now?”

Status:

Dated May 28th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

The Father

January’s preview:

“Director is the writer of the play it’s based on. And that alone tells me the ceiling on this is 3.5 stars. If it’s a play and the playwright is directing, then it’s just an acting piece.”

3 stars.”

Status:

Status:

Netflix has it dated for January 29th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes

Flag Day

January’s preview:

“It’s not about humanitarian doctors, so I can easily guess 3.5 stars here. Plus it has Penn, Josh Brolin and Miles Teller in it. So that’s also a good enough reason to guess that it’s gonna be solid.”

Status:

Finished, no date.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

The Forever Purge

January’s preview:

“This franchise has exclusively been 3 stars and pretty entertaining for what it is, and I’m expecting more of the same.”

3.5 stars.”

Status:

Now Joe Bell. Dated February 19th.

Gore

January’s preview:

“This was dumped by Netflix because it stars Kevin Spacey. I’m tracking it on the off chance someone dumps it on VOD like they did with his last movie.”

I thought someone might dump it quietly, but no dice. So this may not come out ever.

Will I keep tracking it?: No. 3 stars for posterity.

3 stars, because of David Gordon Green, but that’s it. How are they suddenly gonna improve on what we already saw?”

Status:

Dated October 15th.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes

Halo of Stars

January’s preview:

The Humans

January’s preview:

“The playwright is directing his own play, which makes me think 3.5 is the ceiling on this, so I’ll go 3 stars. Plays tend to be tough to translate on screen, and usually all that gets me through them (especially this one, which feels pretty theatrical by nature) are the stars. So yeah, 3 feels about right for this.”

Status:

Status:

It should come out next year.

Status:

They’re releasing it on HBO Max on 2/12.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Jungle Cruise

January’s preview:

3 stars. I don’t even have to see or say anything further. We get it. Big budget summer Disney movie starring The Rock. 3 stars. Automatic. No variation.”

King Richard

January’s preview:

3.5 stars on principle. I can get 4 out of this, but it’s Will Smith, which concerns me. He tends to level out the quality of his films in order to appeal to the most people. But he does this every once in a while. Does a drama. Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds, I guess Collateral Beauty. Either they work and they’re solid or they really don’t. This feels like it’s gonna work, so I’ll stick with 3.5, but I just can’t assume 4 here. I hope it can be, but I can’t assume it.”

“Given all the people behind this, I cannot assume anything less than 3.5 stars. Maybe I get 4. I’ll be very happy with 4. But it’s a Gone Girl type novel, from the sound of it, and I have no idea what these reshoots and the Disney takeover are gonna do to this movie. So we’re gonna stick with 3.5, because at worst it should be that with all these people, and then see what we get.”

Status:

Disney will put this out sometime next year. I’m curious as to how.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

The World to Come

January’s preview:

3 stars. I can’t trust a synopsis that talks about feelings and doesn’t have a concrete plot.”

Status:

Just got picked up for next year.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Worth

January’s preview:

“I’m gonna err on the side of the cast. 3.5 stars.”

Status:

No word since Sundance last year.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

Yes Day

January’s preview:

“Miguel Arteta directs, and this feels like another one of his Terrible Horrible No Good Day kids movies than his indies.”

3 stars on premise, but this could easily go to 2.5.”

Status:

Netflix has it.

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.

You Can’t Win

January’s preview:

“1920s HOBO UNDERWORLD. How can you not want to see this movie?”

3 stars.”

Status:

Still no update.

Will I keep tracking it?: I’m not giving up on this.

Zola

January’s preview:

3.5 stars. I’m interested in this.”

Status:

A24 will put it out next year. Maybe June?

Will I keep tracking it?: Yes.
