Oscars 2020: Makeup & Hairstylists Guild Nominations

The Makeup & Hairstylist Guild announced their nominations today. As a reminder, this is your Oscar shortlist:

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
Emma
The Glorias
Hillbilly Elegy
Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey
The Little Things
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Mank
One Night in Miami
Pinocchio

Let’s see what the guild has to tell us about how this category is likely gonna play out:

Best Contemporary Makeup

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

The Prom

Promising Young Woman

Oh shit. Borat! They didn’t shortlist Borat! I didn’t even consider that at the time they announced that shortlist. Also, Bill & Ted does have a fair amount of makeup, from the robot to them as jacked prison inmates to the old age makeup and, of course, Death. Kinda surprised that didn’t make it either. Also kinda funny that Birds of Prey is considered contemporary, but I guess with only two categories and not three like ADG and CDG have, it makes sense. The other two make sense here, but weren’t shortlisted so they don’t really matter for my purposes. The Little Things is the only contemporary shortlisted effort that didn’t make it on here, and I didn’t particularly have much hope for that film’s chances anyway. So, barring a BAFTA nomination, I’m thinking we can probably disregard that as a guess come nominations time.

Best Period/Character Makeup

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Hillbilly Elegy

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Mank

Mulan

Emma. Not shortlisted. Though I guess that’s more of a hairstyling thing than a makeup thing. So maybe it’ll still show. There’s Bill & Ted again. Otherwise, Mank, Ma Rainey, Hillbilly Elegy make their entries on here. The Glorias doesn’t get on, though I imagine that’s more of a hairstyling thing. Same for Jingle Jangle. Pinocchio is interestingly not here as well. Though there’s still the ‘special makeup effects’ section, which covers stuff like prosthetics. But so far we got 4/10 the shortlist with three categories to go.

Best Special Makeup Effects

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Hillbilly Elegy

Mulan

Pinocchio

The United States vs. Billie Holliday

Wonder Woman 1984

There’s Pinocchio. Hillbilly Elegy gets a second nomination and the rest aren’t shortlisted. BUT, that means that One Night in Miami has not been nominated by the guild. Which means it needs a BAFTA inclusion for me to think it has any sort of a chance (not that I really thought they were gonna go there anyway outside of stature of the film, but now the precursors are playing that out).

Best Contemporary Hairstyling

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

The Prom

Promising Young Woman

Birds of Prey gets on both contemporary categories, and this exactly matches the makeup category, which tells me that there wasn’t a whole lot of stuff they considered exemplary (or they just really liked these five).

Best Period/Character Hair

Hillbilly Elegy

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Mank

Mulan

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey

Oh, so there’s four out of five shortlisted films. Jingle Jangle gets a mention. Mank, Ma Rainey and Hillbilly Elegy get on again.

So where does this leave us?

From this guild, we have:

  • Hillbilly Elegy — 3 nominations
  • Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — 2 nominations
  • Mank — 2 nominations
  • Birds of Prey — 2 nominations
  • Pinocchio — 1 nomination
  • Jingle Jangle — 1 nomination
  • Emma — 0 nominations
  • The Glorias — 0 nominations
  • The Little Things — 0 nominations
  • One Night in Miami — 0 nominations

And, to refresh your memory, BFCA nominated  Emma, Hillbilly Elegy, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Mank.

I’ll have to do a little digging to see how the precursors help us here, even though we’re only the second year into a five-nominee category. But I suspect that we should be pretty solid on at least four of these based on how things are shaping up.

I expect The Little Things and The Glorias to not get any sort of BAFTA love. One Night in Miami needs BAFTA for me to think they’re gonna potentially go there and Emma is something I can easily see the BAFTAs including, making that my sixth contender for five spots. I don’t really have a lot of faith in Jingle Jangle making it on, but I guess anything’s possible.

So, right now, BAFTA-pending, the category I most see happening is:

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Hillbilly Elegy

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Mank

Pinocchio

Alternate: Emma

Dark Horse: One Night in Miami

Surprise: Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, The Little Things

Shock: The Glorias

That makes the most sense to me, though I do consider Emma a strong alternate in the place of one of those (right now, I guess that’s Birds of Prey, but without BAFTA, I’m not sure I can guess it).

I’ll do some digging by the time we get to nominations about how helpful the precursors have been here (since I so rarely even consider it, given how easy this category has been to telegraph in the past). But for now, I expect this to be the most likely category until BAFTA announces (and possibly even then).
