Well I guess Production Design is next.
The Art Directors Guild breaks their nominees down into three categories: Period, Fantasy, Contemporary. Contemporary practically never gets nominated at the Oscars, unless it’s something that crosses over into Fantasy (a la Her or The Martian, which I think both ended up there. There are definitely two in recent years that blur the line). Anyway, this should give us a smattering of where things are looking for Production Design.

They announced the Art Directors Guild awards last night. So we’ll have a little bit of insight into Best Production Design.
As a reminder, the BFCA Award went to The Shape of Water. The Oscar category is Beauty and the Beast, Blade Runner 2049, Darkest Hour Dunkirk and The Shape of Water and BAFTA has the same exact category So this should really be enlightening for how Production Design is likely to go. All of them were nominated at ADG.
The Period winner was The Shape of Water.
The Fantasy winner was Blade Runner 2049.
The Contemporary winner was Logan.
They also included an Animated category, which Coco of course won.
With two wins already and a likely BAFTA win coming, this seems to be The Shape of Water’s category to lose. War movies never get nominated at the Oscars, let alone win, so I doubt Dunkirk can jump up and win. Darkest Hour needs a BAFTA win to feel like its got any chance. Beauty and the Beast, I guess, could possibly win, but that feels like a longshot without any sort of real support. Blade Runner could win the BAFTA and also make a play for it, but with 13 nominations, Shape of Water certainly seems like a favorite. So we’ll see if anything changes between now and BAFTA.

Our third guild of the day, the Art Directors Guild. This one is more interesting to me than the other two, since this one is more closely tied to what will be nominated. Chances are, at least 80% of your Oscar category will come from these lists.
They separate their nominees into three categories: Period, Fantasy and Contemporary. Typically the former two are where the nominees come from, since the Oscars favor those two over modern day stuff. And usually you can jus kind of tell by looking at stuff what will or won’t make it on.

They announced the ADG Awards last night, which should give us a little insight into the Production Design Oscar. Which, to my recollection, is one of the more interesting potential outcomes for the entire ceremony. There’s not a whole lot that feels wide open at this point, but this is a category that could be open.
Your category is — Arrival, Fantastic Beasts, Hail Caesar, La La Land and Passengers. All five of them were nominated at the ADG Awards. Arrival, Fantastic Beasts and Passengers were in the Fantasy category, La La Land was in Contemporary and Hail Caesar was in Period. But they were all nominated.
The Contemporary winner was, of course, La La Land.
The Fantasy winner was Passengers. Not Arrival or Fantastic Beasts. Which is interesting.
The Period winner was Hidden Figures. Not even Hail Caesar, knowing it was nominated for the Oscar. (more…)
The Art Directors Guild announced their nominations. So now we have some clarity into that hotly contested Best Production Design category. I know I’ve got some money down in Vegas already.
By the way, have I mentioned how much I love the Best Production Design category? Because I feel like I don’t say that enough.

The ADG Awards were announced last night.
This will be a quick one.
Winning in Period was The Revenant.
Winning in Fantasy was Mad Max: Fury Road.
Winning in Contemporary was The Martian.
Contemporary almost never wins at the Oscars. Plus the other two nominees that aren’t these three are Bridge of Spies and The Danish Girl. One doesn’t have a shot and the other is a scare factor owing to the fact that Lincoln won this category in 2012 when it seemed like a close call.
It’s looking like it’s a toss-up between Mad Max and The Revenant with Mad Max the probable frontrunner (owing to the former film taking place almost entirely outside).
ADG announced their nominations this morning. This would be for the corresponding category of Best Production Design, which I feel is a more encapsulating term than Art Direction, even though I grew up with this category being called Art Direction.
I also feel like I make this known every time this category comes up — I love it. I love Production Design, because it’s a very tactile category. I love thinking about all the thought that went into things that are on shelves, and the type of wallpaper they chose to make the set feel more real.
