Oscars 2019: CDG Awards

The Costume Designers Guild handed out their awards tonight.

The winner in Period was Jojo Rabbit.

The winner in Contemporary was Knives Out.

And the winner in Fantasy was Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

As a reminder, the Oscar category consists of The Irishman, Jojo, Joker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Little Women. It should be noted that only Jojo and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were nominated here at the guild, so it’s not the biggest help in the world. And since BFCA gave their award to a film that wasn’t nominated (Dolemite Is My Name), we’re basically waiting on BAFTA to tell us how this one’s gonna go.

But hey, at least Chris Evans’ sweater won something, right?

Oscars 2019: CDG Nominations

Our second guild of the day, the Costume Designers. Frills, frills and more frills. If there’s one thing I know about them, Downton Abbey got on, Quentin got on and Tim Burton got on. The rest we’re just gonna wait and see. They’re nothing if not predictable. Honestly, just look up Sandy Powell and Colleen Atwood and assume that they’re on no matter what they worked on, and possibly even more than once. It’s the guild, man. They vote for their favorites. Don’t pretend like Roger Deakins doesn’t have like, 17 ASC nominations (okay, 15. And he has 14 Oscar nominations, so it wasn’t the best comparison. Leave me alone, I’m rambling. Just go with it. Sometimes you gotta fill an intro and you’ve got nothing because it’s costumes).

CDG has three categories, same as ADG: Period, Fantasy and Contemporary. You’re only looking at the first two for the category, but this year, it should be pretty obvious what the major contenders are. The same films should get nominated up and down the line, and we’re just whittling it out based on most versus least nominations.

As a reminder, BFCA nominated Dolemite, Downton, Irishman, Little Women, Once Upon a Time and Rocketman for their costumes award. So let’s see what CDG did.

Oscars 2018: CDG Awards

The Costume Designers Guild Awards were tonight.

To absolutely no one’s surprise, The Favourite won in Period, Black Panther won in Fantasy and Crazy Rich Asians won in Contemporary. I could have written all of that before the ceremony, that’s how obvious those selections were.

So that’s it. That’s the last of the precursors. We’re done here. Oscar voting closed today at 5, and you’ve got every piece of information you’re gonna get. Oscars are on Sunday, and I’ve got a 50,000 word article ready to be uncorked. So get ready for that.

Oscars 2018: CDG Nominations

The Costume Designers Guild also announced their nominations today. They separate their awards the way the Art Directors Guild does. Three categories: Period, Fantasy, Contemporary. And, as with ADG, pretty much you only have to focus on Period or Fantasy, because contemporary costumes never get nominated. You know this category — the frillier, the better.

This year should be pretty easy for us, since we have two period royalty pieces, a big Marvel movie with lots of ethnic costumes, and Mary Poppins. The category basically fills itself out.

Oscars 2017: CDG Awards

The Costume Designers Guild handed out their awards last night.

The Period award went to The Shape of Water.

The Fantasy award went to Wonder Woman.

The Contemporary Award went to I, Tonya.

For those who think this is a big blow against Phantom Thread’s chances in this category on Oscar night, just know that the Oscar winner in three of the past six years straight up lost this category at the guild. All this really tells you is that The Shape of Water is now something you gotta factor into the Costumes race a little bit more (which I’d hope you’d end up doing anyway, given the 13 overall nominations).

One more major guild left to announce — CAS on Saturday (and the Makeup & Hairstylists Guild as well, but I don’t think we need them just yet to gauge that category). We’re two weeks out and we’re just about all set, guys.

Oscars 2017: CDG Nominations

The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations. Similar to the production designers — three categories: period, fantasy, contemporary. All of which will be focused into a singular category at the Oscars, mainly consisting of period and fantasy.

The one question we’re likely to ponder this year is — I, Tonya… contemporary or period? How long ago do we truly consider 1994, and just how old do we all want to feel?

I’ll leave that right there for you as we get into the nominees: (more…)

Oscars 2016: CDG Awards

… And there’s your last guild. From here on out it’s just straight up guessing. Remember the Scientific Method? You do all your experiments testing laundry detergents or whatever you did for science fair and then there’s that analysis portion where you make graphs and stuff. That’s where we’re at now.

Anyway, the Costume Designers Guild announced their awards tonight. And surprisingly — or not surprisingly — they gave us absolutely no help at all.

Hidden Figures won for Best Period Costumes, Doctor Strange won for Best Fantasy Costumes and La La Land won for Best Contemporary Costumes. La La Land is the only film actually nominated. Fantastic Beasts was nominated in Fantasy and lost, and Florence Foster Jenkins and Jackie both lost in Period.

So we waited all this time for them to announce, and they told us squadoosh. Thanks, guys.
