2018: In Memoriam

As we do here at B+ Movie Blog, we begin the new year by remembering those we lost in the previous one.

It’s not so much mourning the loss as much as it’s about appreciating these people and what they’ve given us. We don’t always appreciate what people have given until they can’t give anymore. The people on this list dedicated their lives to our entertainment. And I want to celebrate them.

I limit my list to 50 people, because otherwise it’s too much and I can’t spend time talking about the ones who mean the most to me. So while this is not a list of everyone who died in 2018, these are the people who died in 2018 that mean the most to me. (more…)

I limit my list each year to 50 people, because otherwise it’s too much (especially with the cultural carnage we had this year) and I can’t spend time talking about the ones who mean the most to me. 2014: In Memoriam

We’re going to kick off the new year by remembering all the wonderful people we lost over the past year.

As a society, we don’t take enough time to do that anymore. Not to talk about people dying. But to celebrate what people have given us. You don’t appreciate what actors and actresses and writers and directors have given you until they can’t give anymore. These people dedicated their lives to our entertainment. The least we can do is take a minute to feel thankful for them.

I’m not going to go over everyone, because I just can’t. I limit my list to 50. And it won’t be the 50 everyone else would pick. I’m picking the 50 that mean the most to me and my purposes.

Here are the people we lost from 2014 that meant the most to me: (more…)

2013: In Memoriam

Last year, I did my own little In Memoriam tribute for the film people who died because, every year at the Oscars, they list about 30 people who died, and it’s both bittersweet and upsetting. Bittersweet because it reminds you of all the great people who died over the year, which you may have forgotten about and now have to relive and feel sad about all over again, and upsetting because it happens so quickly, and you really don’t get a chance to fully appreciate the ones you don’t know about. So it was my way of both paying tribute to all the people who died as well as get a jump on the tributes so that way I wouldn’t have to feel as sad in the moment when the names pop up.

Once again, I only am dealing with the people who have died within the calendar year of 2013, and people who are primarily film actors. So no to the dead Glee kid, or people like that. (Though I will give a shout out to Dr. Joyce Brothers, and all her Abrahams and Zucker movie cameos.)

I’m also capping my list at 50, because otherwise it’ll get crazy and also really obscure. I really just want to stick with either the really big people, the ones that hurt the most, and the ones who were also really important in ways we never realized before. Because every year, we lose some of the people responsible for our favorite movies. And they deserve their dues for the lives they lead and their work on all of these movies.

So that’s what this list is. A celebration of these people: (more…)

2012: In Memoriam

I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner.

The In Memorium tributes during the awards show telecasts are always the most bittersweet parts of those shows for me. It’s sad seeing all those people we loved who died over the year, but it’s also nice seeing them get their due one last time. So many people die over the course of the year, it’s nice to have that tearful reminder of, “Oh, I forgot they died. That’s sad. But man, they’re amazing.”

So that’s what this is gonna be. A refresher before Oscar night. And a nice tribute from my end about the people I loved who have passed over the course of the year. We’re only dealing with the people who died in the calendar year of 2012. All the people who died this past month are gonna be on next year’s tribute. They’ll get their due, don’t you worry.

I’m also gonna truncate the list, because I don’t have all day. I’m just gonna talk about the main people, either the ones that matter to me or just the main people. You know what I’m talking about. I’m gonna miss people. I know I am. But I’d rather spend more time on less people than casually mention people I don’t know anything about just because they died. Everyone who had anything to do with the movie business who died is going to be missed, but I only have so much love to give at once. (Also, I’m only gonna be dealing with almost strictly movie or really prominent TV people. For the most part. People who did acting and  Sorry, Dick Clark, Davy Jones (even though he was in Head) and Phyllis Diller. You’ll be missed too.)

Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t also say happy trails to two acting legends who decided to retire in 2012, Peter O’Toole and Bob Hoskins. Hoskins was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and decided to retire to focus on that and O’Toole I think wanted to do the Connery thing and just enjoy life. Both of them will be sorely missed on the stage and on the screen.

So here is my tribute to (some of) the people involved in film and television who died in 2012: (more…)
