The Most Overrated Films of 2016

One of the mainstays here at B+ Movie Blog in January is me going over what I consider to be the most Overrated, Underrated and Underseen films of the year. These terms should all be self-explanatory.

We begin with the Overrated list, because, as a rule, I try not to be negative about movies. That said, some movies can’t help but be overrated. And it’s not their fault at all. It’s the public’s. Or the studio’s. A studio will hype a movie as one thing, and it won’t be that. Or the public will proclaim something to be the greatest thing since circumcision and it’s just too much. Typically overrated has to do with the praise or hype heaped upon a movie than the quality of the movie itself. That’s how I deal with it.

I’m not indicting a film’s quality so much as I’m indicting the way people talk about them in relation to their quality. Stop treating a B- like an A. And stop treating an A like an A+ that also gives you a blowjob.

With that image in mind, here are the films I consider the most overrated films of 2016: (more…)

The Most Overrated Films of 2015

The next three days are going to be a series of “year end” lists that take some more time to think about than the others. Which are the most overrated, the most underrated, and the most underseen films of 2015, as well as the great films of 2015 you’ve never even heard of.

To begin with today’s list — I try not to be negative here. That doesn’t help anybody. But it’s a fact of life that there are going to be some movies each year that get overrated. I used to explain this article as “sometimes the movies don’t deserve the acclaim.” But now I think my way of thinking about it has become, “Sometimes people overhype stuff too much.” Sure, there’s some subjectivity involved. A movie is overrated by definition when you don’t believe it’s worth all of the praise it’s getting from everyone else. But in my mind, it usually has more to do with the praise than the movie.

Most of what I’m going to be doing here, for each of these films, is saying, “It’s fine. Calm down.” The movie is a fine movie, but let’s not call it the second coming of Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo.

The Most Overrated Films of 2014

A lot of movies come out each year. Some people see, some don’t get seen. Some deserve their acclaim, some deserve the hatred. By process of elimination, these lists are able to be made every year. So what I’m doing over these next three days is listing what I think are the most Overrated, Underrated and Underseen films of 2014.

We’re starting with the Overrated ones, since I feel it’s best to get the negativity out of the way first, and then we can just celebrate everything. The idea behind this list in particular is — I feel like certain films every year are, for lack of a better word, overrated. This is NOT saying they’re not good movies. And this is NOT saying that overrated has anything to do with my opinion on them. It’s a case by case basis, and certainly some of them are influenced by whether or not I think they’re good movies. I’ll do my best to explain that for each one.

The general idea here is that these are all movies that I feel — people are just overrating them in some way. It could mean a movie that was very promising at the beginning of the year that got hyped up as a big release that turned out to not be that great. It could mean a movie that made a lot of money that’s actually a piece of shit that I can’t understand why people went to go see it. It could mean an indie darling that everyone’s all up on because it’s the trendy thing to do that I don’t think is really that amazing. And mostly it’s just for films that I think are just pretty good that, for some reason, everyone else thinks are fucking incredible. This is my time to vent about all of these things.

The Most Overrated Films of 2013

A lot of movies come out each year. Some people see, some don’t get seen. Some deserve their acclaim, some deserve the hatred. By process of elimination, these lists are able to be made every year. The Most Overrated Movies of 2012

Again — according to me. This was arguably more difficult than my list of Most Underrated Films of 2012, because it’s hard to say what’s actually overrated. Most of the time the list ends up being about our own personal perceptions and the people we hear most. The kind of thing where — if someone you don’t like really likes a movie, and they talk about how great it is all the time — chances are you’re gonna think that movie is overrated. That’s how these things work.

So take this (as well as everything I say, since it’s not like I fucking know what I’m saying half the time. I just put shit up on the blog. I don’t remember any of it, I just say it. It’s nonsense) with a grain of salt. I’m just saying that I perceive these movies to be the ones that most people overrate based on my experience of having lived and watched a lot of movies in 2012.

Also, before we get into the list, know that this doesn’t mean I don’t like these movies. Some of my favorite movies of all time are overrated. Some of the movies on this list I liked a whole lot. I still think they’re overrated by people. I’ll try to explain as best I can why I think they’re overrated.
