The B+ Movie Guide
This came about back in 2012, when my friend and site contributor Colin emailed me saying there should be a list of movies that self respecting “film people” ought to have seen, something he could use as homework for himself to fill in the gaps of what he has and hasn’t seen. Of course, he did this knowing full well that within a few hours, I’d have a list for him.
I created a list of 500 movies that I felt were “essential.” This was not meant to be a be-all, end-all list. It was me going through and picking movies I felt people ought to have seen (most of which are films that most people would agree are essential) and mixing in other movies that I think people ought to have seen. Ones that I wanted Colin to see, because they’re awesome. You can read about how I came up with the list here.
When Colin was about to finish the list, we realized that we should write it up on the blog. The blog started with me finishing a giant movie list and figuring I should write it up for posterity’s sake, so it seemed appropriate.
But of course, knowing me, I can’t stop there. I decided to come up with more movies he could use for a second list. And then thought, “Well, since we came up with the list, let’s try to get as close as possible to what actually would be a proper list?” And that all became what you’re gonna see on this page.
We’ll get to each segment in time. We’ll start with the original list that I sent to Colin.
These are the 500 movies that we mutually decided would be his list of quasi-essential movies (though we’re not calling it an essentials list. Because to objectively come up with that list, you need a large sample size of qualified opinions) that your average film person should see. The idea being, if you’ve seen these movies, you get a nice mix of disciplines whereby you’d be able to have a film conversation with film students, regular people, and movie buffs and sound like you know what you’re talking about.
Hell, even more than that. Honestly, if you’ve seen this list, you’re already in the upper percentiles of what most people have seen, movie-wise. You get to be that person, when someone brings up an old movie and goes, “Oh, you wouldn’t have heard of it,” who goes, “What are you talking about? That movie’s awesome.” And you immediately are cooler than the rest of your friends, those philistines.

Now for the New List.
I always refer to this one as the “fun list.” The idea is that now that the “essentials” out of the way, he can move onto the fun stuff. Not that the essentials aren’t fun, but this list doesn’t carry the weight of “must see” and is just fun shit you can put on and enjoy. This one is more tailored to be mostly great movies I know Colin (and, really, most people) will enjoy.
Since we’re not dealing with “essentials,” this list isn’t as rigid. That one is about what you “ought to” have seen. This one is, “Hey, now that you’ve seen a bunch of stuff, check out these if you want. They’re good too.” I’m not providing you with the list, just options should you choose to create another list.
What I did for this one is — I pulled 1,000 movies. More than 1,000 would have been too unwieldy. I started with all the movies that I feel are essential or close to being essential that didn’t make the first list. Then I took a bunch of movies that are just straight up great, iconic or awesome. Movies that you don’t necessarily need to have seen, but are pretty great. I’d say this list is at least 80/20 movies that you can put on and enjoy, no questions asked.
The idea for this list is that I’m giving you 1,000 movies, and you can go through and find the ones seem the most interesting to you. Maybe you’ve seen 200 of them. Maybe another 100 don’t seem like your kind of movies. Okay, fine. You can create your own second list of movies to watch based on what you think you’d enjoy. The first list was called “homework” by Colin (though please – give me that kind of homework every night). This list is more the Scholastic Book Club of movie lists. Order what you want, get them, read them, don’t read them, all on your own time. The ultimate goal is to give people cool shit to watch. That’s it. I’m just here to facilitate.

The first list was completed long ago. Along the way, I realized I wanted to create the fun list for Colin, which morphed into that entire new list. By the time we realized these were all going to become articles, I realized, “Well, it would be nice to try to approximate what an essentials list would look like.”
The obvious drawback to both lists is that they only go up to 1999. (And also don’t include anything pre-features, but that’s a whole separate thing. Maybe one day we can get into a silent film class on here. But not yet.) There are clearly very essential movies that came out since 2000. So I’m going to try to figure out what those are.
Since I feel like time needs to pass before we can really decide what’s essential and what isn’t, I didn’t do much delineating with this list. I just pulled a certain number of movies from 2000-2014 and left it at that. If you want to see which ones I consider essential and which ones I don’t, you can read all the specific articles.
Consider this a list of films from the first 15 years of the 2000s that I consider to be either films you need to see or films you should see because they’re fun or great or interesting or whatever. They’re both on there, and I’m not ready to make declarations about them just yet (for all-time, at least) because enough time hasn’t passed. I feel it’s at least 15 years before you can really start making those decisions. Because they’re fairly recent, it’ll be easy to see which ones you have or haven’t seen. Mostly it’s about the list. You can decide what you do or don’t want to see. The articles aren’t going to help you very much.
