Oscars 2015: Best Animated Short Shortlist

Oh boy, look at me, three in one day. This is what happens when I’m not on a timeline to present shit when it happens but instead am presenting it when I have enough time to present a reasoned… well, when I have time to think for a second about it rather than no seconds.

Anyway, let’s skip the pleasantries. 10 animated shorts got shortlisted, and five of these will be nominated.

Here they are: (more…)

Oscars 2015: Best Live-Action Short Shortlist

I love these shortlists. These are so much fun for me. It’s like — and this will go completely over some people’s heads — during football season when the new point spreads come out on Monday. I have more fun looking at those and guessing how it’s gonna go than I do actually picking games for my office pool.

But anyway, here’s Live-Action Short, probably my second least favorite category of the Oscars and my least favorite category to pick because it’s the one that’s the hardest to get a gauge on. I have no idea what they’re gonna do from year to year.

So we’re left with 10 movies with 5 getting on. One can only hope to get 3 of them right come category time: (more…)

Oscars 2015: Best Foreign Language Film Eligibles

I got bored. Not for lack of having things to do, but because I’m getting antsy for Oscar season. I need things to talk about.

And since I already talked about every potential documentary that could be nominated, why not do Foreign Language too? It’s only 80 films. And I’m sure I’ll recognize at least a quarter of them.

We’ll go country by country, talk about the eligible films, and guess what could end up on the list (and by that I mean, they’re gonna shortlist 9 of them in a month. So we’ll guess those).

Here are your eligible submissions for Best Foreign Language film this year: (more…)

The B+ Movie Guide for the 2000s (Part XXXVI)

The obvious drawback to my original list was that it stopped at 1999. Because it was easier. I wrote it up in 2012, and I wanted to give at least a decade’s worth of time before I made any of those decisions, because can we really say something that came out last year is essential? And at that point, it was just easier cutting the list off at 1999 and not dealing with any of it.

But since we really just combed through a lot of movies, I figure I should at least give it a shot. This is all pretty fluid anyway. It’s more meant to be about giving people things to watch that they probably should rather than making proclamations about the end-all, be-all list of “essential” movies. Think of it this way, if at least 90% of my list s comprised of movies people would say, if they found out you haven’t seen them, “Oh man, you gotta watch that,” then it accomplished what I wanted it to accomplish).

Here’s how this is gonna work: I’m gonna give you a giant list (I’ll cap it at a round number), going from 2000 to 2014, of all the movies you should see. And I’ll specify for each one whether it would go on an “essentials” list or that secondary “fun” list. (more…)

Pic of the Day: “Are you okay little girl?” “Don’t ‘little girl’ me. I’ve been carrying this family on my back for over a year, ever since Frankie died. He was my brother too. It’s not my fault that he’s dead. It’s not my fault that I’m still alive.” “Ah, Christy.” “Mom was always crying because he was her son. But he was my brother too. I cried too… when no one was looking. I talked to him every night.” “She did, Dad.” “I talked to him every night, until…” “…until when?” “Until I realized I was talking to myself.”
