Oscars 2019: VES Awards

The Visual Effect Society handed out their awards tonight. As a reminder, your Oscar category is:

1917
Avengers: Endgame
The Irishman
The Lion King
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

So really, those are the only five we’re paying attention to here.

VES hands out 11 film awards, 4 animated. So it’s seven major categories we’re looking at. For Animated, Missing Link won Best Animated Effects and Best Animated Character, while Toy Story 4 won Best Created Environment for the Antiques Shop and Frozen II won for Best Effects Simulations, for, I guess, the snow and shit. All of that makes total sense to me.

As for the film awards, The Lion King won Best Effects, Best Virtual Cinematography and Best Created Environment. Considering the entire film is created and the creation of the effects was done in this sort of VR space, I’m not surprised it won any of those three awards. Meanwhile, The Irishman won for Supporting Effects and Composting, while Alita: Battle Angel won for Animated Character and Rise of Skywalker won for Effect Simulations. That means 3/5 of the category won an award, with 1917 and Endgame the films that won nothing. 1917 was only nominated for Supporting Effects, so once Irishman won that, it was gonna go home empty-handed. Endgame was nominated in three categories and lost them all.

I will say, I appreciate that all the awards basically went to the films that made the most sense. It’s rare that you feel like people vote for what the best choice is rather than with some sort of agenda.

BAFTA is on Sunday, and we’ll learn a lot based on what wins there (since BFCA already gave out their award to Endgame and I’ve already discounted that as nonsense, which was just backed up by VES), but I’m suspecting that the Oscar winner is probably gonna be The Irishman, with Lion King a contender (but probably overmatched in the ‘class’ game) and 1917 a potential upset pick. Mostly I wanna see if BAFTA goes for 1917. If they do, that’ll make things REALLY interesting. But we know how this goes — Best Picture nominees usually outmuscle everything else in the category. You kinda forget that part, since 2015 was the last time Best Picture nominees were nominated and Ex Machina blew that whole thing up. But before that, Best Picture nominees were automatic in the category (and even since, the ‘classier’ films tended to win — Blade Runner, First Man). So I’m thinking we stick to that, but hey, maybe if BAFTA goes Lion King… maybe not. We’ll see.

Today is Best Documentary Feature. The most broken branch in the Academy. Yet again, the best and most critically lauded documentary of the year has been left off the list, leaving yet another category that continues to be meaningless. Great job, guys. (more…)


Oscars 2019: CDG Awards

The Costume Designers Guild handed out their awards tonight.

The winner in Period was Jojo Rabbit.

The winner in Contemporary was Knives Out.

And the winner in Fantasy was Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

As a reminder, the Oscar category consists of The Irishman, Jojo, Joker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Little Women. It should be noted that only Jojo and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were nominated here at the guild, so it’s not the biggest help in the world. And since BFCA gave their award to a film that wasn’t nominated (Dolemite Is My Name), we’re basically waiting on BAFTA to tell us how this one’s gonna go.

But hey, at least Chris Evans’ sweater won something, right?

Oscars 2019: ASC Awards

Okay, final award. ASC. Cinematography.

And if you didn’t think they were gonna give it to Roger Deakins for 1917, you’re high. He’s been nominated at the guild 16 times, one more time than he’s been nominated for an Oscar. He’s won four other times, for Shawshank in 1994, The Man Who Wasn’t There in 2001, Skyfall in 2012 and Blade Runner in 2017. His five wins at ASC ties him with Emmanuel Lubezki for most all-time, ahead of Conrad fucking Hall.

And did I mention — it’s Roger fucking Deakins shooting a war movie to look like it was done in a single take. He’s going to win the Oscar.

Remember eight years ago when we couldn’t buy him an Oscar? Now he’s just flexing his muscles and winning these things like it’s nothing. I love it.

Oscars 2019: USC Scripter Award

I generally don’t give this its own article, but I’m on a roll and I felt it’s worth mentioning.

The USC Scripter Award is given for Adapted Screenplay. The winner of the Scripter Award has gone on to win the Oscar eight of the past ten years. They’ve only missed twice, once last year, when Leave No Trace won and wasn’t nominated for the Oscar, and then in 2009, when Up in the Air won and shockingly lost the Oscar to Precious despite winning all the precursors.

I say all that because — Greta Gerwig just won for Little Women. Which just thrills me all to hell. I had no idea what the hell to do with Adapted Screenplay. I knew she won BFCA for it, but I didn’t even think that would bore out anywhere else. But this is a huge step forward for her winning and for the film to finally get some damn recognition for being one of the best films of the year.

She’s still gotta clear the WGA and/or BAFTA hurdles over the next week, but man, right now she’s actually the favorite in this category. That’s nuts. She’ll get competition from Taika for Jojo and maybe Zaillian for Irishman, but honestly she could take this down. I can’t see them voting for that Joker script and The Two Popes is lucky to be nominated. It’s pretty much her and Taika and she could win an Oscar. Which would be DOPE.

And that’s really why I talked about this award, mostly so I could get excited about Greta potentially winning an Oscar, which would make me happiest of probably any of the categories they’re gonna announce on Oscar night.

Oscars 2019: DGA Awards

DGA just announced.

Sam Mendes just won for 1917. So that’s a done deal. We’ve got four acting categories and Best Director all sewn up before the BAFTAs, which will confirm just about everything else we’ve got here. But even if they go opposite, all that really does is make you go, “Oh, that’s cute.” Because the DGA, as we all know… almost always right. So that’s about a done deal in Director. Picture is still up in the air, and really the only interesting thing BAFTA can do now is give someone else (namely Bong Joon-ho or Quentin, but mostly Bong Joon-ho) Picture and Director and make the Picture race more interesting. Because the door just shut on Director. This shit is locked. Because, didn’t we mention — HE SHOT A WAR MOVIE IN A ‘SINGLE TAKE’. Of course the directors were gonna go crazy for that.

Anyway, ASC still to announce, as if we had any doubt that Deakins was gonna win that shit too.

Oscars 2019: CAS Awards

Okay, second awards handed out tonight — CAS. For Sound Mixing.

The winner was Ford v Ferarri. I should point out that 1917 WAS NOT nominated at CAS, so really that was a foregone conclusion that it would probably win. I was only really looking out to see if somehow Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would win. But really the Sound categories are gonna come down to Ford v Ferrari and 1917, and the question is gonna be — as it usually does — will one film win them both or should you commit the cardinal sin and split the Sound categories?

I’m really curious to see what BAFTA does next weekend, because right now, Ford v Ferrari technically has more precursor wins than 1917 does. But BAFTA will really tell us where this is all likely gonna go come Oscar night.

Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 won their Animation award, in case there was any doubt about where that category was headed. That’s won like every single guild there is to win thus far except animation, which is its own weird thing.

Today is Best Original Song, and a category that really turned itself around after it bottomed out in 2011. Unfortunately, original songs in film are not always very strong, and this year in particular brought us a particularly weak crop, of which they left off probably the best song that was written all year. Oscars 2019: MPSE Awards

The Motion Picture Sound Editors gave out their awards last night.

Ford v Ferrari won for SFX+Foley, while 1917 won Dialogue+ADR, Jojo Rabbit won Music and Rocketman won Music in a Musical. Parasite won for Foreign Language Film, to nobody’s surprise. And Toy Story 4 won for Animation, further cementing that film’s status as the Animated Feature winner.

This isn’t a huge help for us in the Sound Editing (or Mixing) category, since Ford v Ferrari and 1917 are figuring to be the two big frontrunners there. The rest of the category in Editing is Joker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Star Wars, so not that we needed the help, but those are the clear favorites. Though the only distinction we really have for what’s gonna win is that 1917 is the big war Best Picture nominee with 10 nominations and Ford v Ferrari only has four nominations, almost all technical. We’ll see what CAS does on Saturday night, though 1917 isn’t nominated there, so I suspect Ford v Ferrari will win or Once Upon a Time will win. Pretty much whatever they do is gonna make our lives harder in guessing these categories. So that’ll be fun.

Oscars 2019: SAG Awards

The SAG Awards were handed out tonight.

I actually missed part of the show because I figured they’d wait for the football to be done. But apparently not. Fortunately by the time I realized, the game was already a blowout, so I was able to watch both and not really have to pay full attention to either.

This is my least favorite awards show, but the results mean the most of just about any of them. Plus, going in, I could have told you every single film winner. So there wasn’t really a whole lot of surprise there or anything for me to want to see, and really it was just about seeing who gave the best speeches (Brad Pitt wins again on that front and De Niro had a great one too, specifically when he was speaking from the heart and not reading from his prepared words).

2019: PGA Awards

The PGA Awards were handed out tonight. 1917 won Best Picture.

That’s two precursors for it now, after winning the Globe. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood won BFCA and the other Globe. Interesting those are the two nominees that weren’t nominated for Editing at the Oscars (though one of them by design). I guess we’ll see where BAFTA goes (though at this point, it’s almost literally the difference between Europe and Hollywood). Of note is that the PGA, which used to be automatic and is seen as close to automatic, is 21/30 all-time (70%) and are 8/10 the past decade, missing only 2015 and 2016. So that’s a pretty big result. That about cuts the Best Picture race to three total films.

Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 won for Best Animated Feature and Apollo 11 won for Best Documentary. Which fits with every other result we’ve had thus far. Apollo 11 got left off (unsurprisingly), and the PGA Animated winner has not won the Oscar only four times ever, with two of them (Tintin and Lego Movie) not being nominated at the Oscars, one being Cars losing to Happy Feet and the other being Wreck-It Ralph losing to Brave. Which is essentially 10/12, one being a lesser Pixar losing to a runaway phenomenon hit and the other being a boring old Pixar choice. Given how little’s in the category and how little alternative there is to Pixar in there when voters look at that ballot, Toy Story should run away with that one.

SAG Awards are tomorrow night. So we should have (BAFTA pending) a lot of big stuff set by Monday morning.

Oscars 2019: ACE Eddie Awards

The Eddie Awards were handed out last night. Here are the winners:

Dramatic: Parasite

Comedy: Jojo Rabbit

Animated: Toy Story 4

Documentary: Apollo 11

Nothing particularly surprising. Parasite winning Dramatic made the most sense for them. Marriage Story was never gonna win, Joker would have been a big surprise, for everyone including the Joker team. The Irishman would have made some sense, because it’s Thelma, but I haven’t seen real love for that movie out there to this point. Ford v Ferrari would have made sense as a pure ‘editing’ movie, but Parasite is the consensus favorite film out there by a lot of people and feels like it can easily win the Editing category even without winning Picture. 1917 wasn’t nominated because there’s no editing, so if they’re all in on that, then this didn’t matter, did it? And then in Comedy, Jojo was the de facto winner the minute Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wasn’t nominated. If the guild didn’t nominate it, why would they give it their big award? And Jojo’s the only other nominated film in the category. Then, Toy Story in Animated made total sense. It’s gonna win that category. And Apollo 11 is the consensus best documentary of the year (and they didn’t even nominate it, so that’s how you know it’s good), so that’s no surprise either.

It’ll be real interesting to see what BAFTA does with editing, especially given Parasite not being nominated there. This might actually be one of the few categories of the night we actually have to think about. Which is sure setting up for a 2011 scenario, isn’t it?
