The ASC Awards were handed out tonight.
Surprising absolutely nobody, Chivo won for the third straight year. Making him the overwhelming frontrunner to win Best Cinematography at the Oscars. For the third straight year. He won for Gravity and for Birdman, and is now poised to win for The Revenant.
This also coming a few hours after winning the BAFTA in the same category. Pretty sure this one’s locked too.
Oh yeah, the WGA Awards were announced last night.
I realized I never wrote it up as I checked to see if ASC announced yet (which they will soon).
The Big Short won for Adapted and Spotlight won for Original.
Your screenplay categories are locked. No need to stretch this article out any more than it needs to be.
Every year before the Oscars I break down each of the 24 categories. I do this to familiarize everyone with the category, how it works, what its history is, how it usually turns out, and also as a precursor to my picks article, allowing me to get most of the heavy lifting out of the way beforehand.
How these work is — I go over each category’s history, give you all the previous winners and nominees, then list the current year’s nominees. And then I’ll go over how each of the guilds (if there is a corresponding guild) have went, and how that corresponds to the Oscars (some guilds mean a lot to how a category will play out. Others mean nothing). It’s basically everything you need to know in order to make an informed decision when you make your picks on Oscar night. And then I also rank the nominees at the end in terms of where I see them in terms of their likelihood to win.
Today is Best Original Score. Some cool shit here. (more…)
They’ve given out the BAFTA Awards. Which means we have all the information we’re gonna get in order to pick the Oscars. There are like five guilds left to announce, but for the most part, we have everything we need and now have two weeks to mull it over.
The BAFTAs, I’ve learned, are helpful, but usually in the sense of guessing when the Academy is going to falter. Or to back up what we already know. So we’ll take this a category at a time and see where it leaves us.
Here are the results of the 69th (hooray, immaturity!) BAFTA Awards: (more…)
I’ll preface this by saying I know nothing about how BAFTA voting works. I just know how to use the results to pick the Oscars.
That said, the show is gonna start in like 20 minutes (though by the time this gets posted it’ll probably have just started), so I’m just gonna run through some guesses, because why the hell not. Mostly to familiarize myself with what they’ve nominated and kill 20 minutes of my morning from all the other shit I was doing.
Here are my guesses for the BAFTAs: (more…)
