Oscars 2015: CAS Awards

The Cinema Audio Society also announced their winners tonight. They’re the guild of sound mixers.

In a category featuring four of the five Oscar nominees (The guild nominated The Hateful Eight instead of The Martian), The Revenant won. Which shows a lot of support for that film in the guild, and possibly for Best Picture.

Mad Max not winning either means nothing in the end, or it means a split for Sound. And, as we all know, predicting a split in the sound categories is always perilous, unless there’s a musical involved. Though, to be fair, they were also wrong last year in picking Birdman. So maybe this means nothing. We’ve got a week to decide.

Oscars 2015: Makeup & Hairstylist Guild Awards

The guild that no one knows exists handed out awards tonight.

Best Special Effects Makeup and Best Period and/or Character Makeup went to Mad Max: Fury Road, all but signaling a win for that at the Oscars.

Best Contemporary Makeup went to Furious 7. Best Contemporary Hairstyling went to Pitch Perfect 2 and Best Period and/or Character Hairstyling went to Cinderella.

Those last three don’t matter. Basically all the precursors for makeup we have point to Mad Max winning over The Revenant.

Oscars 2015 Category Breakdown: Best Supporting Actress

Every year before the Oscars I break down each of the 24 categories. I do this to familiarize everyone with the category, how it works, what its history is, how it usually turns out, and also as a precursor to my picks article, allowing me to get most of the heavy lifting out of the way beforehand.

How these work is — I go over each category’s history, give you all the previous winners and nominees, then list the current year’s nominees. And then I’ll go over how each of the guilds (if there is a corresponding guild) have went, and how that corresponds to the Oscars (some guilds mean a lot to how a category will play out. Others mean nothing). It’s basically everything you need to know in order to make an informed decision when you make your picks on Oscar night. And then I also rank the nominees at the end in terms of where I see them in terms of their likelihood to win.

Today is Best Supporting Actress, which this year, may as well also be called Best Actress. (more…)
