Oscars 2016: Annie Award Nominations

They just announced the Annie Award nominations. Which I don’t particularly care about, because this is one guild that tends to not really be much of a help in gauging the Animated Feature category. Typically that category you can eyeball and get at minimum 4/5.

But it’s a guild, so I look at it. So here we go with this year’s Annie Award nominations: (more…)

The Oscar Quest: Reconsidered (Best Actor, 2009-2010)

The Oscar Quest began in May of 2010. I finished about fifteen months later, and wrote it up for this site. That was essentially the first thing I did on here. Five years have passed since then. I’ve grown as a person. My tastes have changed, matured (or gotten more immature, in some cases). So it feels fitting, on the five year anniversary of the site and of the Oscar Quest, to revisit it.

I want to see just how my opinions about things have changed over the past five years. I didn’t do any particular work or catch-up for this. I didn’t go back and watch all the movies again. Some I went back to see naturally, others I haven’t watched in five years. I really just want to go back and rewrite the whole thing as a more mature person, less concerned with making points about certain categories and films than with just analyzing the whole thing as objectively as I can to give people who are interested as much information as possible.

This is the more mature version of the Oscar Quest. Updated, more in-depth, as objective as possible, less hostile. You can still read the old articles, but know that those are of a certain time, and these represent the present. (more…)

Oscars 2016: National Board of Review Awards

This is one of my five favorite days of the awards season. I love hearing what NBR picks as their choices each year. Those twelve people who regularly read this website already know how gushy I get over NBR, and I’m sure by now it’s, “Yes, Mike, we get it. Shut up with the NBR already.” I hate myself for it. I hate that I call them NBR. I get it. But I still love them.

To me, the National Board of Review is the one organization that is most in tune with my own tastes as a movie watcher. That’s not to say that I agree with every film they put on their list. It just means that, like a good friend, I agree with most of their choices, and based on their consistency of taste, I understand why they choose certain films. Take me for instance. You see me rate a certain kind of movie and you go, “Yeah, I get it. You don’t like horror movies.” And based on knowing that, you can judge how you’d feel about it based on my opinion of it. And that’s what NBR is to me. I know they love Clint Eastwood (so without even looking I know Sully is on their list this year), so I get it. I can’t get mad when I see Sully, because I know that’s what they like.

They have, very consistently over the years, matched with my tastes of favorite films, to the point where, generally about 9 or 10 of their 11 choices end up as my top 20 or 25 favorite films of the year. So you can see why I get so excited when their list comes out. (more…)

Oscars 2016: Best Animated Short Shortlist

Another shortlist. One I actually enjoy looking at. Animated Short. I enjoy it so much I held off writing it up until I could try to look for most of the potential nominees.

Typically you know what they’re gonna vote for once you have a final category. Picking the category though, can be a bit tough. Last year, looking at the shortlist, I could have told you one movie that absolutely would not be nominated. And sure enough, there it was. So what do any of us know. But at least we have some cool stuff to look at in the meantime.

Here is your shortlist for Best Animated Short Film: (more…)

Oscars 2016: Best Live-Action Short Shortlist

One final shortlist to get out of the way while we’re here. They announced The Live-Action Short shortlist. This is, historically, the most difficult of the Oscar categories, because you have no idea which way they’re gonna go. Animated Short, generally you can pick to their tastes, and Documentary Short, they have a definite preference. This category — no clue what they like or what they’re gonna vote for. Just when you think you have an idea, they go different.

So let’s see what we have for ourselves this year, and see if we can guess which half of this list is going to be nominated.

Here are your ten shortlisted films for Best Live-Action Short: (more…)

Pic of the Day: “Here’s a little story I’d like to tell, about three best friends and their first Noel. It begins right before Christmas 2001, when a young man named Ethan became an orphan. His mama and papa both tragically gone, it seemed for him Christmas had sung its swan song. As he sat alone on Christmas Eve, his friends came over and forced him to leave. They had to get Ethan out of his funk, so they went to a bar and they got his ass drunk.”
