Oscars 2016: ADG Nominations

The Art Directors Guild announced their nominations. So now we have some clarity into that hotly contested Best Production Design category. I know I’ve got some money down in Vegas already.

By the way, have I mentioned how much I love the Best Production Design category? Because I feel like I don’t say that enough.

The 2017 Film Release Calendar: March

Every January, I preview all the films that are scheduled to come out for the year. I go through the existing release calendar, month by month, and guess how much or how little I’m going to like each of the films.

The major benefit is that it allows me, come the end of the year, to see which movies ended up surprising me for better or for worse, or which ones I had wildly disproportionate expectations for. It also gives me a chance to know what’s coming out and what to look forward to.

I also take all the films that are filming or in post and theoretically able to come out that year and preview those too, along with all the films from the previous year(s) that have yet to come out that I’ve been tracking. In all, I end up previewing more films than pretty much anyone else, I’ve been told. Oscars 2016: ACE Eddie Nominations

The ACE Eddie Awards were announced.

Best Editing is the most important category for gauging a nominee’s chances at Best Picture. Which makes these nominations both really important and really not important. Because the Academy is gonna nominate whatever they want in Editing anyway. They’re going to make sure the nominees match what they liked best. But at least we can get a handle on where their heads are at now, so that’s good.

Oscars 2016: WGA Nominations

The Writer’s Guild announced their nominations.

Generally you can only really believe about 60% of what you see with them, just because every year a bunch of scripts go in different categories (two years ago, Whiplash was nominated in Original at WGA and was pushed Adapted for the Oscars), or are just straight up ineligible at the WGA for various reasons. So you can only go so far in believing the WGA nominations in terms of translating into Oscar nominations.
