Oscars 2016: PGA Awards

The PGA Awards were announced this morning. They are the one group that best predicts what is going to happen for Best Picture.

To get it out of the way, for all the idiots writing articles today and tomorrow to get clicks — no, fucking Deadpool is not going to be nominated for Best Picture. Don’t be stupid.

Typically they’re good for seven or eight nominees out of their list, depending on how many nominees there are. If there are 8 overall nominees, I figure they will guess 7 of them right and miss one. They always miss one. (more…)

Oscars 2016: BAFTA Nominations

BAFTA nominations time. This is where we see cultural divides — which films do well with Americans but not with the Brits, and get an idea of what those surprise acting nominees are gonna be.

Generally they’re pretty much in line, but you know, every little bit helps.

The 2017 Film Release Calendar: June

Every January, I preview all the films that are scheduled to come out for the year. I go through the existing release calendar, month by month, and guess how much or how little I’m going to like each of the films.

The major benefit is that it allows me, come the end of the year, to see which movies ended up surprising me for better or for worse, or which ones I had wildly disproportionate expectations for. It also gives me a chance to know what’s coming out and what to look forward to.

I also take all the films that are filming or in post and theoretically able to come out that year and preview those too, along with all the films from the previous year(s) that have yet to come out that I’ve been tracking. In all, I end up previewing more films than pretty much anyone else, I’ve been told.
