The Most Underrated Films of 2016

Today we discuss the films of 2016 that are much better than people are giving them credit for. Sometimes they’re movies that people straight up overlooked, sometimes they’re huge movies that are respected that I think are better than people are saying. Sometimes they’re movies that people hated that I think are quietly very good. We run the gamut here.

The main criterion for this list is — you think one thing about this movie… it’s better than that.

So here are the films I consider to be the most underrated films of 2016: (more…)

Oscars 2016: DGA Nominations

The DGA Nominations are here, and pretty much all the clay we’re gonna get to guess what the Oscar nominees are is in our collective possession.

Based on what the frontrunners are for Best Picture, I’d say they pretty much went chalk here. Though the DGA is notorious for only getting 4 of the 5 nominees, with at least one other entry making it on that feels more like a directors branch choice than a populist “frontrunner.” Think Lenny Abrahamson for Room last year, or Bennett Miller for Foxcatcher in 2014, or Michael Haneke and Benh Zeitlin in 2012. There should be something you don’t expect as much. It’s not like 2013 where all five nominees are major players (that year was Scorsese, David O. Russell, Alexander Payne, Alfonso Cuaron and Steve McQueen, established names or frontrunners based on their films).

So I’d feel safe saying not all of these five will make it on the final list, but it’s also a good measuring stick for where their heads are at.

Oscars 2016: CDG Awards

The Costume Designers Guild announced nominees today.

Excellence in Contemporary Film

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie

Captain Fantastic

La La Land

Lion

Nocturnal Animals

Contemporary almost never gets nominated, though La La Land will buck that trend this year. The Martian technically did last year, but usually space movies get labeled as fantasy. Still, I wouldn’t expect more than La La Land to make it on the list this year, even if Nocturnal Animals sounds like something they could nominate.

Excellence in Period Film

The Dressmaker

Florence Foster Jenkins

Hail, Caesar!

Hidden Figures

Jackie

This is your bread and butter.

Jackie will be nominated. Florence Foster Jenkins seems likely. The Dressmaker stands a decent chance, since costumers don’t really go by what the “big” films were and pick based solely on costumes. Hail Caesar would be an interesting one. My gut says no, but it’s definitely possible. Hidden Figures could also easily make it, though that seems like a bland choice for them.

Surprised to see no Love & Friendship here. They tend to go for overt period costuming like that.

Excellence in Fantasy Film

Doctor Strange

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Kubo and the Two Strings

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Love seeing Kubo on here. There’s a lot of love for that film all around. And I hope it matters in the final voting, but I’m sure it won’t.

Tim Burton movies always get guild nominations. This one shouldn’t get an Oscar nomination too. It’s just not loved enough for that. Even Alice in Wonderland had some sort of likability factor going for it. This one stands no chance.

Rogue One — I doubt it. Star Wars last year didn’t get on, so I have no reason to think this is any different.

Fantastic Beasts stands a decent shot, even though it’s weird for me to fathom a Harry Potter movie getting multiple Oscar nominations, since they so rarely got anything before.

Costume Design is always a tricky one, since there’s always a random one or two that manages to get on. Or you figure, “They can’t miss with these corsets,” and then it’s nowhere to be found, even though normally that wouldn’t be anywhere near the Oscars. You can usually get 3/5, but guessing those last two can be real tricky.

Off-hand, movies that seem like they have some period/flashy costumes they might like…

Live by Night is always a fringe contender, but it feels like that ended up too little too late to make any noise.

Allied would normally be a big player here, but it feels like an afterthought.

Silence… doubtful. Rules Don’t Apply is period. That jumped out at me. But again, maybe that gets one or two token nominations in random categories, if that. Maybe a fringe contender at best.

Loving is period, but probably too subdued for them.

The Birth of a Nation, had it made any more noise, would have made a showing somewhere.

I mean… yeah. This might be what your category is. La La Land, Jackie, Florence, and then a combination of either The Dressmaker, Love & Friendship, Hail Caesar, Fantastic Beasts and maybe Hidden Figures. We have a week, but that’s sounding pretty good to me right now.
