For the yin, there is the yang. And in this case, this is the more interesting half. As there were a handful of films that were much better than I thought they’d be, there’s a group of films that just were hugely disappointing to me.
All you need to know is — I had expectations, they were not met. That does not mean the movie was bad in any way or that I disliked it. It simply means that I thought I’d like these movies more than I did. My expectations are my own and my thoughts on films are my own, so that’s all this is gonna be based on.
Fortunately, this year, either because I no longer allow myself to have sky high expectations for things or because there weren’t any outright disasters I didn’t see coming, nothing here is too horrendous. Usually it’s just, “Yeah, I hoped that would be better, but it was fine.” So that’s good.

Pic of the Day: “Margaret, I just need to know something. Did you put Joanna up to this?” “No, I did not put Joanna up to this.” “Give her a little pep talk, maybe?” “Joanna is a very unhappy woman and it took a lot of courage to walk out this door.” “How much courage does it take to walk out on your kid?”
Our third guild of the day, the Art Directors Guild. This one is more interesting to me than the other two, since this one is more closely tied to what will be nominated. Chances are, at least 80% of your Oscar category will come from these lists.
They separate their nominees into three categories: Period, Fantasy and Contemporary. Typically the former two are where the nominees come from, since the Oscars favor those two over modern day stuff. And usually you can jus kind of tell by looking at stuff what will or won’t make it on.

Our second guild today is the American Cinema Editors. I love seeing which way they go, though the problem here is — the Academy is just gonna nominate whatever the hell they want for Best Editing, because the major Best Picture contenders have to be nominated for Best Editing (for whatever reason). So, unless they don’t really intend to vote for Call My By Your Name, it’s gonna be nominated for Best Editing, regardless of whether or not it appears on the ACE list. (I haven’t seen anything yet, by the way. We’re all gonna find this out together.)
They announce Dramatic and Comedic categories, which also doesn’t particularly help us, but does expand to more possibilities for them to eventually be right in the end. Isn’t that nice?

The new year is up and running, and we’ve got some guild nominations to get through.
We begin with the WGA, which is generally helpful in figuring out the Screenplay categories, outside of the fact that invariably a handful of scripts are not eligible for the WGA, which will throw a giant monkey wrench into everyone’s calculations. I know for a fact that Three Billboards and Darkest Hour are not eligible. Though I believe those are the only ones.
This is also a year where it feels like Original Screenplay is way stronger than Adapted Screenplay, which will undoubtedly lead to some ‘snubs’ there at some point during the race.
Let’s see what the WGA has given us this year: (more…)
