Mike’s Favorite Animated Films of the Decade (20-11)

Our first official list. My favorite animated films of the decade. What I love about animated films in particular is that, in a lot of ways, they’re the first films we’re exposed to as children. Anyone growing up pretty much from the 80s onward grew up with these films in our lives, because of the home video age. Before we went to theaters to see stuff and before we got into ‘movies’ at large, there was all those movies we grew up on. And now, even though I’m not of the age for most of the animated fare to appeal to me like they used to, there’s still some amazing stuff that comes out each year that’s worth talking about, because they, while entertaining for all, are an art form of their own.

So we’ll shout out the 50 that I liked best over the past decade. Animation is a genre with some great stuff, but overall a very limited number of films that come out each year, owing to the length it takes to actually make one of them. So 50 feels right, rather than trying to stretch it.

So here are my top animated films from the decade 2010-2019: (more…)

Pic of the Day: “What did you tell him?” “I told him the truth, and strange enough, he believed me.”

Pic of the Day: “Uh… everything that guy just said is bullshit. Thank you.” “Objection. Counsel’s entire opening statement is argumentative.” “Sustained. Counselor’s entire opening statement – with the exception of ‘thank you’ – will be stricken from the record.”

Pic of the Day: “Faith is a house with many rooms.” “But no room for doubt?” “Oh plenty, on every floor. Doubt is useful, it keeps faith a living thing. After all, you cannot know the strength of your faith until it is tested.”

Pic of the Day: “I never even knew the dame.” “You know she’s been murdered, don’t you?” “Yeah. So was Julius Caesar. I didn’t know him either.”

Pic of the Day: “Jesus, I am so scared. I’ve spent twenty years building up my ego, and when I really need it, it locks itself in the john.” “It’ll come back to you, trust me.”

Pic of the Day: “I sold flowers; I didn’t sell myself. Now you’ve made a lady of me, I’m not fit to sell anything else.”

Pic of the Day: “You know what I remembered in my dream?” “No, what did you remember?” “I remembered when I was older.” “When you were older?” “Yes, you were also there, but you were different. Do you remember?”

Pic of the Day: “The other day, I cried. But you know what? Fuck that day. That’s why God, or whoever, makes other days.”

Pic of the Day: “Little by little the look of the country changes because of the men we admire. You’re just going to have to make up your own mind one day about what’s right and wrong.”

Pic of the Day: “I remember one morning getting up at dawn, there was such a sense of possibility. You know, that feeling? And I remember thinking to myself: So, this is the beginning of happiness. This is where it starts. And of course there will always be more. It never occurred to me it wasn’t the beginning. It was happiness. It was the moment. Right then.”

B+ Movie Blog: The Top Tens of the Decade Lists

We just finished an entire decade in film and I covered it all on this site. Of course this was going to happen.

It’s been a while without proper content on this site. Granted, the bits I did do over the past year-plus are all things that are going to be permanent resources on this site. I wrote less overall, but what’s there will stick around longer. And I’m happy with that. This year, though, this being the tenth year of this site’s existence and the end of a film decade… why not recap the decade?

What I did (I even started working on this last spring because I was so excited about it) was go through the entire past decade and gathered my favorite films in a bunch of different categories. So starting tomorrow, we’re going to introduce our first list. I still have the rest of the Release Calendar to get to, because the shortened Oscar season didn’t allow me to get past February on that. But I figured let’s introduce the feature now and slowly roll it out over the two weeks it’s gonna take us to clear those articles. Because once that’s done, it’s nothing but Top Tens of the Decade lists through the end of the summer. (more…)

The B+ Movie Blog Tenth Anniversary

We’ve finally (somehow) hit ten years on this site. Technically this is year ten, but still… it’s been a decade. By the time we hit 1/1/21, it will be ten years to the day that I posted for the first time on this site. Which is insane.

Ten years is a long time to do anything. For the first like, five, things were going up pretty consistently every day. If we’re really getting technical, something has been posted on this site every day since it was created. Granted, a lot of them, especially in recent years, have been a Pic of the Day and nothing else. But in the early days, I think I went from 2011 into early 2013 before I officially took a day off and had nothing written go up. The point is, there’s been a lot of content here over the years, and there’s always three months straight of content every year between November and February.

I felt like now would be a good idea to go in and just sort of recap all the big things I accomplished with this site over the past ten years. This is really for no one else but me, but that’s most things on this site. Sure, a lot of stuff does end up being for other people should they want it, but largely it’s for me. Otherwise I’d have abandoned this place a long time ago.

I’m basically just gonna go over the ten years of this site and reminisce a bit. I used to post updates like this all the time back in the early days. I bet if you went back and compared what this is going to be versus what those are, you’ll see a definite change in tone and maturity. I mean, I’m still a piece of shit, but now I’m just an older piece of shit.

Anyway, let’s reminisce. (more…)
