I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner.
The In Memorium tributes during the awards show telecasts are always the most bittersweet parts of those shows for me. It’s sad seeing all those people we loved who died over the year, but it’s also nice seeing them get their due one last time. So many people die over the course of the year, it’s nice to have that tearful reminder of, “Oh, I forgot they died. That’s sad. But man, they’re amazing.”
So that’s what this is gonna be. A refresher before Oscar night. And a nice tribute from my end about the people I loved who have passed over the course of the year. We’re only dealing with the people who died in the calendar year of 2012. All the people who died this past month are gonna be on next year’s tribute. They’ll get their due, don’t you worry.
I’m also gonna truncate the list, because I don’t have all day. I’m just gonna talk about the main people, either the ones that matter to me or just the main people. You know what I’m talking about. I’m gonna miss people. I know I am. But I’d rather spend more time on less people than casually mention people I don’t know anything about just because they died. Everyone who had anything to do with the movie business who died is going to be missed, but I only have so much love to give at once. (Also, I’m only gonna be dealing with almost strictly movie or really prominent TV people. For the most part. People who did acting and Sorry, Dick Clark, Davy Jones (even though he was in Head) and Phyllis Diller. You’ll be missed too.)
Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t also say happy trails to two acting legends who decided to retire in 2012, Peter O’Toole and Bob Hoskins. Hoskins was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and decided to retire to focus on that and O’Toole I think wanted to do the Connery thing and just enjoy life. Both of them will be sorely missed on the stage and on the screen.
So here is my tribute to (some of) the people involved in film and television who died in 2012: (more…)
