My Favorite Male Lead Performances of 2013
If there’s one thing I don’t do enough, it’s sit down and single out specific performances I loved from a year. I’ll single out movies, but the only time I mention performances that I felt were particularly strong is when I talk about the Oscars. So it’s now an annual thing that I sit down and pick my favorite performances from each year.
It’s actually quite difficult to do when you get into it. Because you find yourself instantly going to the performances that all the awards groups single out. Naturally if most people put it down, you feel like that’s an easy one to put down as well. So what I did was — I carefully considered every movie I saw in 2013 (all 230 of them) and actually thought about how I felt about the specific performances in them, from lead to supporting. And that’s how I made my lists.
Today I’ll be covering all the male lead performances I loved. They’re in order, but they’re not really in any order. The numbers don’t matter. I just wanted to single out performances I thought were really strong without paying attention to what’s Oscar-ish and what isn’t.

Oscars 2013 Update: DGA Awards
So, Alfonso Cuaron just won the DGA.
That about sews that one up.
Unless we’re in for a real shocker.
Which no one expects.
Best Picture race — still interesting. Now we actually have to look to the BAFTAs for help. (Boy, that’ll be interesting.
